“Charming Period Features”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2014

We stayed here on Valentines and thought it quite romantic. The hotel used to be a bank so has some fabulous features. The elevator doors are amazing. The hotel rooms are built around an open area surrounded by neat old fashioned windows. This resulted in the hallways being quite narrow. Perhaps a problem if you are loaded down with lots of luggage but I think worth it to maintain the buildings charm. We also ended up with a toilet level window in our bathroom. The hotel is situated right in the heart of gaslamp. Noise is unavoidable but they provide complimentary ear plugs. The only thing I found odd was that for such a nice hotel they had absolutely the cheapest toilet paper possible. If you are booking at least 3 weeks in advance, check out their website as they have some very nice deals which combine a hotel stay with some local attractions.

Bar_none_travel, Thank you for your review. I am glad that you enjoyed our historic property so much over your special weekend. I am glad that you took advantage of the complimentary earplugs at the front desk. We understand that although a convenient location, there is unavoidable downtown noise. I am glad this did not affect your experience with us. If you chose to stay with us in the future, asking for a quiet room ahead of time will also help. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit.

We were very impressed with this hotel, it far exceeded our expectations. This hotel is a huge credit to the Courtyard by Marriott brand. It is an exceptional property with exceptional staff.

The building is in an old bank and this is evident at every turn. The lobby is impressive and well designed, even the corridors have touches from the old bank, it was a joy just to explore the hotel.

Make sure you pop downstairs to see the old bank vaults. It's so nice to see the hotel make a feature of these.

Our room was on the 12th floor so we had very little street noise even though the gas lamp area can be quite noisy at the weekend.

Special mention should also go the breakfast, it was included in our rate under the "Stay for Breakfast" offer. We expected it to be a self serve option as is found in many hotels in the price range, but it was full service, sit down, with a menu. It is without a doubt the best "included" breakfast we have had at any hotel, ever.

We used valet on the first night for the convenience but note it is $38 with tax. Depending on the day / events happening in San Diego we found plentiful nearby parking for around $15 a night. Literally one block away on 7th. There is another open parking lot one block down that was $27 per night. That would be a 20 second walk to the hotel.

This is an exceptional property and at it's current rates I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Our executive room was on the 12th floor and down the far end of the corridor so was very quiet. How...

Richard H, thank you for such a grand review. I am glad to hear how much you enjoyed your stay at our property. Our restaurant uses local farms for fresher produce and our menu is handcrafted by our chefs. I am glad you enjoyed that as well as our historic property. I highly recommend our valet service as it is the single $36 charge for unlimited access where most other lots do not offer that luxury. However, with our convenient location, there is plenty to do within walking distance. I hope you choose to stay with us on your next visit to San Diego.

Very nice hotel in Gas Lamp district. Rooms were very nice even though hotel is fairly old. Price for valet car service is very high; $36 per day; but parking in area public lot is $27 per day. Breakfast was very good; but expensive.

Ronald E, thank you for your review. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay. As you mentioned, being in downtown does have some costs with such a convenient location. Although I highly recommend the services we offer in valet and our unique restaurant, we do offer many other options. I hope you choose to stay with us on your next visit to San Diego.

I was very impressed with the Courtyard Marriott Downtown. The hotel used to be a bank, so it has a lot of unique charm you don't expect from a Courtyard. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are small (as is expected in an older downtown building) but nicely furnished. Try to get a room with a view out the front of the hotel...mine had an alley view and it wasn't nearly as nice. Meeting facilities are excellent. The location is perfect, as it is walking distance to both the water and Balboa park.

Marc Z, thank you for such kind words. I am glad to hear that our staff was helpful and that you were able to enjoy our convenient location. It is a good tip to ask for a room with a view and some of our rooms are larger than others due to our history and layout. On your next visit, let us know what you preferred and we would be more than happy to help you find something suitable. We look forward to having you as our guest in the future.

Stayed at this hotel while attending the Davis Cup tennis matches at Petco Park. The hotel is an easy walk to the park, located in an old bank building. Our room was on the 12th floor with a water view, beautiful arched windows looking out over the city and the bay. The decor is very attractive and the hotel staff pleasant and attentive. I would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: High floor, water view

We had one night at the Courtyard Downtown and it was fantastic. We arrived with our rental car (valet parking) and were upgraded to a king suite on the 14th floor- the only room on that floor! The staff was great about giving us some history of the building (the 14th floor used to be a shooting range for the female tellers when the building was a bank), and encouraging us to head downstairs to check out the old bank vaults and etc. We found the room to be superb - comfortable bed and living area. The location of the hotel itself was perfect - completely walkable to nearly everything, from restaurants to the zoo. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!
