“Great Location to visit Little Italy and waterfront.”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

We spent one night at the Residence Inn Downtown San Diego. The hotel is a good location for a short walk to Little Italy and the waterfront of downtown San Diego. There is a parking fee of $14.00 a day. We parked our car and walked around town. The room is nice and clean and has everything that you would need to make a meal if you were needed. We had a nice room with a view of the pool. The breakfast was good and a nice variety of choices from eggs to waffles.

Room Tip: The Ocean front of this hotel is under construction so I would ask for a pool view to avoid looking...

This is a nice enough hotel with a nice location near downtown, rental car locations, and the airport. The facilities are newer and in nice shape. My "complaint" is they miss the opportunity to excel with the small stuff. The first morning when I went to shower, there were 2 bottles of conditioner - no shampoo. The second morning the shampoo had bee replaced but they did not replace the coffee packet. When I came back late that afternoon dirty classes were still on the desk and night stand. Now, none of these are deal killers but I travel a lot and it's a pleasure to stay at properties that pay attention to the detail. You don't miss/notice it until it's not there. This hotel needs that attention.

Dear “Carl M”,

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us such great feedback. Rest assured we are taking it very seriously. So much so, I have read this comment in our morning stand up (meeting) to bring our re-focus back to the small things that make our hotel great. I agree that attention to detail makes an experience so much more of a positive one. Thank you again and I invite you to try us again if your travels should ever bring you back to San Diego.

Respectfully,

Adam Lutz

This is the second time I've stayed at this SD hotel, and the reasons were 1) location and 2) free shuttle to Sheraton Towers where conventions were held. The shuttle is free but you have to leave at their scheduled time: at the hour or half hour. They will, however, pick you up when you're ready to return. That's a plus. The rooms are terrific: coffee maker, stove, refrigerator and freezer, microwave, dishwasher. Lots of space. The downside is the noisy air conditioner and fans. My bathroom floor actually vibrated from the a/c unit in the room below. Mine did the same, and I had to shut it off to sleep. Other noise warnings: I was "upgraded" to a bay view room - refuse this upgrade! The bed is placed next to the faux balcony doors which open up to the busy Pacific Highway (a few yards away). There is also a construction site opposite the hotel, so the current view is a big dirt pile and backhoes. I am sure the water park will be nice when it's finished, but it is noisy and dirty right now. The train didn't bother me, and I was not near the pool so no comment there. You are better off getting a room overlooking the parking lot, which will allow you to open a window and avoid traffic noise. Plus the beds in those rooms don't have the balcony windows right next to them so they are quieter. Great for families, but not a solo business traveler. And p.s. I did ask for another room once I saw where they put me, but was told, sorry, we're sold out. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, but overall they don't focus too much on guests' needs.

Room Tip: Avoid bay view rooms unless you enjoy sleeping near the highway.

Dear “eddieharris”,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a thorough summary of your stay. It helps us a great deal with your perception in hopes to improve not only yours but everyone’s experience. We, as a team look forward to when the water garden will be complete as well. I do apologize about the noise level and feel this is something we can address in hopes to correct it for future stays. Our guest needs are most important and I have gone ahead and shared this very crucial feedback with our management team in hopes to refocus on this most vital of goals.

I am happy to hear you like our newly renovated rooms and amenities and look forward to the next opportunity to when your business travels brings you back to San Diego.

Respectfully,

We stayed here the day before we got on a cruise and then one day after we got off the ship. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was clean and the suite we had a kitchenette with a coffee machine and a full sized fridge - so no trying to get fit your own drinks into one of those mini fridges. It is close to the downtown, little Italy, Gaslamp district and the train station. We book the free shuttle to take use to the airport the day before. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the airport. The breakfast was very good with lots of variety, For the hot items there was scrambled eggs, sausage patties, biscuits, and oatmeal. You can make yourself a waffle, toast a bagel or slice of bread. Cold items included cereal, fruit, and yogurt. It gets busy and if you want to read your free morning paper opt for the quieter tables outside by the pool. If you have a large family use the large round tables in the other room across the way with a tv screen in it. The WiFi was a little weak. The first room looked out to the side - no great view but not that important because I was not there to spend a lot of time in the room. Great location for walking around and getting on the trolley. The second room was on the 4th floor and looked out over the pool and hot tub which might be nicer if one was spending a longer time there and you wanted to see if the kids were in the pool. The main swimming pool was heated which was nice. I think it closed at 10pm. The hot tub was a nice temperature. There was a little market to the side and back of the front desk where you could buy snacks and drinks but not alcoholic drinks. We found a Rite-way drug store about 4 blocks away. The shower, tub and toilet were in one room and there was a sink and a mirror just outside that room which is nice because while someone is in the bathroom someone else can brush there teeth and/or fix their hair or whatever. The shower was a typical hotel shower with average water output but it is good for saving water.

We are a family of 4 with young children. We were very concerned because some reviewers reported noisy trains at night. It turns out that the city passed an ordinance prohibiting trains from sounding their horns at night. We had a 2 bedroom suite, which was very quiet at night. Breakfast bar was good and they offered a light dinner with free beer and wine on Monday and Tuesday. I recommend this hotel for families who need more than one hotel room. Location is great and you get a lot of space. Rooms were clean and in good condition. We have no complaints.

Stayed at the Residence Inn, downtown San Diego, on 6th street, around corner from Gas Lamp District this past Thursday night. Excellent location! The restaurants are amazing...with several nice spots to "graze" with a cocktail if your just people watching! Highly recommend this location...don't need a car...parking is very expensive at the hotel, but next door was only $16/nite. Breakfast was included, staff was friendly, and room was very nice. Rate was $133/nite for my stay.

Room Tip: Lookfor best rate at Marriott site...AAA, Govt. rates were pretty good bet.
