This was a return stay for us, we previously stayed at this hotel in January 2011 and we were looking forward to the excellent breakfast we had 1 1/2 years ago.,but there was less variety than the last visit. There seemed to be a lot of pre-packaged foods, pop-tarts, cellophaned muffins although the bagels were very fresh. There was also less fresh fruit than our last visit. The room was adequate but unfortunately during our stay the WI-FI was down and we could not use our laptops and had to use the lobby computer. I found that the strength of the water jet in the shower was very low. We would stay again as it is very convenient to the San DIego Zoo and the highway. The flowers were in bloom and the parking lot was dazzling in beautiful blooms.

Recently moved from Oklahoma to California. The shipment of my families household good were delayed 5 days. Our first hotel we stayed at was small, dirty, and had no pool (a must with a 13 and 7 year old). We left that hotel and came to the Lamlighter. What a difference! The rooms where clean, bright, spaceous, and inviting. They staff was friendly and helpful since we were new to the area and didnt know where much was. They have a free continental breakfast which has a pretty good variety. There are plenty of places to eat nearby. The San Diego zoo and Sea World are only a few miles away too. If need be I will defiantley stay here again and would recommend it to anyone who may come to visit.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms have vaulted ceilings making the rooms feel much larger than the bottom rooms.

We spent four nights here in April, during our West Coast trip and it was one of the nicest of the several Best Westerns at which we stayed.

The rates were extremely reasonable, the room was complete with coffeemaker, microwave, fridge and a solid internet connection. We stayed at the end farthest from the street, second floor, so it was very quiet. The room had a very high ceiling, so an already nicely large room felt very spacious indeed.

The breakfast was adequate (and the coffee good), although the offerings were a bit limited. Just a minor niggle. The staff were most gracious and helpful.

Finally, for us, the location was ideal. We were visiting family who lived in El Cajon and the eastern suburbs of San Diego, so were were no more than 15 minutes from them - and we were also convenient to all the sites we wanted to see.

All in all, this was a great choice for us and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting or needing to be in this part of town - or just plain wanting a great deal!

Room Tip: We liked ours at the far end, second floor.

We spent three nights here in June. One of the best hotels we've stayed in. Well-kept, spacious rooms, colorful landscaping, and walls so thick they could test atom bombs next door without disturbing your rest. Lots of towels and pillows. The continental breakfast was sufficient and the food fresh, but there was slightly less variety than we've come to expect. The pool is clean and heated, so I could swim when the air temps were in the 60s. If there is a downside, there are few restaurants close by, but if you don't mind a brisk walk in either direction, there are good ethnic and American restaurants and take-out to be found. The neighborhood is the opposite of posh, but there is no sense of danger when walking after dark; just watch out for the occasional broken sidewalks.

Room Tip: The truckers who use the place choose rooms away from the road, for example rooms 110-118 or 210-218...

Stayed here for a week back in March (sorry for the late posting) and had a wonderful stay! The office staff, we dealt with three in all (and I apologize for not having their names available), were top notch, surpassing the level of service that we have received at places like the Ritz. They bent over backwards to help us correct a problem, even though the mistake was mine. I had inadvertently reserved a “smoking” room, which my family would have hated. However, even though they were heavily booked, the staff accommodated us in every way, and ended up giving us a suite, since that was the only non-smoking room they had left – and they kept the charges the same as for the regular room I had reserved (remember: fault - mine)!

To top it off, because one of the two TVs in the room wasn’t working, they gave me a discount so I actually paid less than what I was supposed to! I even told the manager that we didn’t need the other TV since one was working - and we didn’t have two TVs in our originally reserved room - but he insisted on discounting it anyway.

A great bargain already, with rooms that feel new with reasonable prices and immaculately kept premises, free continental breakfast, and ample parking, made into an unbelievable bargain because of a very caring and highly competent staff. Don’t even think about staying anywhere else!

Stayed here for six days and was impressed with every aspect of this hotel. The rooms were big and exceptionally clean. The staff were efficient and friendly. The pool and the general setting were ideal... I really can't fault this place and it is extremely good value. Anyone who says otherwise must be talking about a different hotel!

This really is an absolute gem.
We wanted to stay near to SDSU, to visit our son in April/May 2012.
In August 2011, we stayed at a 4 star rated hotel in Mission Valley, which was okay, but not enough to draw us back there.
The agents that we normally use wouldn't recommend anywhere under 3 star, but we found this independently.
Looking at the classification system, we reckon, in essence, it's nearer to 3 star superior comfort accommodation, rather than its 2 star standard rating.
In a nutshell, the whole experience was excellent, and we can only thoroughly recommend it.
We'd be extremely surprised if anybody posted comments to the contrary.
