“Outstanding Customer Service by Host Sydney”
Reviewed May 12, 2012

I am not one to write reviews, but in this case I had to find the time and make an exception. This is my first time staying at the Lafayette hotel, and I can assure you that it will not be the last. It was a very busy day when me and my family stayed. There was a Fashion Show taking place, but the hosts, not once lost their beat. They were very professional and attentive. Host, "Sydney" attended us with amazing customer service and professionalism. I can tell you that it's because of his incredible customer service that I will in fact vacation and stay at this hotel again. I will also recommend his professionalism and his "almost non-existing any more Customer Service" to any one reading this review. This is a ***** Hotel...

Thank you

This place is a gem. From the second I walked in to the establishment I was floored by the very modern and posh style. But love that they show their pride in their very prestige history. The front desk was extremely helpful and made me feel right at home from the moment I walked in. Melissa was very pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable about the hotel's history and the surrounding area. The room was very clean, the pool was so much fun(warm pool by the way). The restaurant was delightful. I am most definitely coming back next time i'm in town for business!!!

Room Tip: ask for a poolside, doors open up right to poll area

I am not one to write reviews, but in this case I had to find the time and make an exception. I travel throughout California on business. As a frequent guest of the Lafayette, the one thing that keeps me coming back is their excellent customer service. From making my reservation to the time I check out, the staff at the front desk make the whole experience a delight. They go out of their way to make my stay as comfortable and convenient as could be. Thank you Miss. Lisa, and I look forward to my next stay, greeted with your warm friendly smile.

They are just completing a renovation that brings this "hotel for the movie stars" into the 21st century. The flavor of the old days on El Cajon Boulevard hangs in the air. Unusually large rooms, decently if simply appointed, make this a comfortable place to stay at a good price. Maybe best of all is that there are three really special restaurants right across the street. Convenient to everything.

Room Tip: I chose poolside for easy parking, quiet, and private access.

We stayed here due to the high price of hotels downtown - and it didn't disappoint. Our poolside room was spacious and although we didn't actually use the pool due to time constraints it seemed well frequented and was open long hours. The public rooms were nicely decorated and staff very friendly. Free parking a bonus and very close to the rooms. Location would be the downside as it is a little out of the centre, but only a 15 min bus ride or 15 dollar taxi ride.

I have been staying at The Lafayette Hotel for many years. It used to be part of the Inn-Suites chain. It's located along El Cajon Blvd. between North Park and Normal Heights. It's a short drive from Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo, and not too far from the beach.

They've been renovating the place over the last couple of years, and I question some of the decisions they've made. They've removed refrigerators and microwaves from many of the rooms, they removed the hot tub, and some of the decor is a bit stark, but the new beds are very comfortable, and the rooms now come with a flat screen TV and a clock-radios that has an iPod dock. I had an extended email conversation with the manager on some of the decisions.

They are still (as of March, 2012) renovating the restaurant/bar/breakfast room, so they serve the breakfast in the very large lobby. It is very interesting--more like a European continental breakfast--with cheese and fruit and little muffins and croissants. There's an Olympic sized swimming pool in the center courtyard.

It's a large, historic hotel that occupies an entire city block. Each room in the main building is named after a celebrity (mostly movie stars) from the past. They have free parking in two outdoor lots and an indoor lot in the basement.

Room rates seem to have gone up recently, as the renovation progressed, but it's still a good value compared to other hotels in the area.

In the northeast corner of the building is The Red Fox restaurant and bar. It is truly something out of the past, with a wooden interior allegedly brought over from England. The restaurant specialized in steaks, but they also have other entrees, and the prices are not outrageous. The adjacent bar has live music every night, sort of an amateur open-mike Karaoke, with most of the performers being old-time regulars. The music is mostly old standards from the 30s through the 50s. The Red Fox is worth a visit. There are also other restaurants in the area, especially in Hillcrest (near 6th & University) and in North Park (near 30th & University).

Great to have you as a loyal guest Buzzhombre. We are delighted to announce that our restaurant, Imig's Kitchen is now open for breakfast and brunch every day; delicious eats! Future guests: Make sure you reserve a 'Suze Suite' if you want a microwave and fridge.

As I know San Diego quite well, I chose the Lafayette for the reasons of price, location, free parking and free wifi. It is a historic hotel in a nice residential neighborhood, near restaurants, and away from the I-8 (Mission Valley) where a lot of the motels are or downtown where parking is impossible or very expensive. Nevertheless, freeway access is close by. The price was moderate for a small but comfy room with a large bathroom, plenty of electrical outlets, and flat screen TV. It's not luxurious, but it is worth the money. I would recommend it to anyone not interested in a motel and not willing to overpay for the downtown hotels.
