It is the 4th time that I stay in the hotel, it is well located close to downtown within walking distance of the little italy trolley station close to the harbour for an evening stroll.
The staff is friendly and helpful, my best experience with them was dec 2008 when we were delayed on the road for 3 days due to snow, coming from northern canada, I phoned them and delayed our arrival 3 times, they kept it for us even after so many rescheduling and kept the promised rate. Whatelse could prove to be a good place. The rate for a city like San diego are good.

My colleagues and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights to attend a conference at the San Diego Convention Centre. The front desk reps were very friendly & helpful. The rooms were clean & nicely decorated. We had 2 Queen beds, w/ a fridge & microwave oven, & a complimentary safety box. They even threw in 2 free bottled water daily. The breakfast is nothing grand but it was good to have orange juice/coffee/tea along w/ a muffin or fruits, or cereal to start the morning. It cost us $375.40 w/ taxes included for the 5 night stay. Other colleagues of ours stayed at a more expensive hotel and it was costing them close to $200 a night & there was no free breakfast, free shuttle from the airport (they had to take the taxi too), & no free internet. It only cost us $8.50 taxi fare from the airport. Denny's restaurant was just across. 7-Eleven was about 3 blocks away. We walked 2 blocks away to go to the Hornblower Dinner & Dance cruise. We walked about 7 min. to go to the MTS train stn to go to the Las Americas Outlet mall (45 min. by train.). We paid the $5 Day Pass. There were 5 of us in total who checked in this hotel and they said they slept fine. Yes, it can be noisy when the train passes by & when cars honked. If you are a very light sleeper, you may want to stay away from any hotels along the train tracks. Overall, it was great because we saved money!

During check in we were not informed that the suite had bunked beds or that there would be a fee for water and a safe, which was charged to my credit card. The following morning while getting ready the power went off on our suite not the building. We try to changed to a couple of rooms instead but the prices were high making it almost to 300.00 for a two night stay.

There are both plus and minuses to staying at the Marina Inn. First, the pluses:

-GREAT location. It's right off Pacific Highway, next to the waterfront. It's close to great Italian restaurants off India St., and very close to destinations such as the Zoo, Sea World, USS Midway, and Old town.

-Tidy rooms. While it was not absolutely spotless, it was overall pretty clean and the furnishings were fine.

-Excellent Rates. For under $70, we got a room that could sleep four people. You can't beat that.

Now for the minuses....

-While it's close to major attractions, it's also off a busy road and the train tracks, so sometimes the noise at night can be a bother, especially if you are a light sleeper.

-The rooms tend to have this weird chemically smell- not sure if it's the air freshener or what, but it was a bit off-putting when you first walk in.

-The attendant at the front desk was a bit absent minded. While he was nice and tried to be helpful, he sent us to a sister hotel down the block to pick up discount tickets to local attractions, but it turned out they actually did not have any available. It wasn't a huge deal since it was just down the block, but he did mistakenly assure us it would be there, and this actually happened TWICE.

OVERALL, it was fine for the price, but there are a few things they can work on to make it even better.

I stayed here for 2 nights - one was on a weeknight and the other on a weekend.

The best 2 things about this hotel were it's close location to the Marina/Cruise Ship Terminal and the service. The rest was kind of...average.

Since the hotel was close to the water it also was close to the airport. You could hear airplane noise all day and night, but I got used to it pretty fast. You could also hear the trolley/Amtrak when it went by from time to time.

The hotel itself was fairly clean, but the bed was average and the bathroom was the same size as the bedroom. Not necessary I think - although it would be excellent for wheelchair accessible guests - as it was a room on the ground floor and had a good set up.

The service at the front desk was excellent - always friendly and helpful.

Make sure to check your rates though - on my weekend night I was charged a higher rate and then the next weekend night I wanted to see if I could get cheaper so I went down the street to the Pacific Inn - they told me they could not give me a good rate, but they could give me a good rate back at the Marina Inn. It wasn't exactly what I was wanting to hear because I had just been charged $20+ more at the hotel the night before. I guess it pays to bargain - because these hotels seem to reduce rates if you mention something.

so i checked online and the price said 80, i gave them a call to confirm and the indian man said 89 and i told him online said 80 so he said "ok u come over now, i give u discount". so me and my boyfriend drove over there and the price went up to 109, he said "because u dont give me credit card number i dont hold room for u, now price is 109" we walked out and soon enough he chased after us and said "ok i give u for 85". so we decided to stay and regretted it as soon as we entered the room. they had roaches running down the bathroom curtains, the bed sheets had burnt holes thru them, the towels looked dirty, the bathroom super small. shower filled with pee stains and tiles coming out, and noise throughout the whole night cuz of the train and traffic. absolutely the worst place ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Originally I had booked two rooms at a sister-motel, Point Loma Inn. About 1 month before visiting San Diego I had a change of plans and canceled one of the rooms. When we got to San Diego we were informed that they had overbooked the Point Loma Inn and would we go to their other motel, Marina Inn & Suites. We debated as we had chosen Point Loma Inn because it was close to our evening destination. We eventually agreed and were sent to the Marina Inn. When we got there they put us in this room, in the very back, bottom floor, next to the laundry room and a lovely view of a dying tree and a nearly vacant lot full of garbage. Although the room itself was adequate, well, the sound of the trains rumbling past in the middle of the night was not exactly my idea of a good time. Oh, and if you're with a family, watch out, Little Italy is not as pleasant as it sounds - in fact, it's pretty much the tail-end of the porno district.

So, IF you book at Point Loma Inn and they tell you they overbooked and want to send you to their other motel, JUST SAY NO!

  • Liked — The two free bottles of water
  • Disliked — Being stuck in a hole in the back of the establishment and the crappy location
