“Some good things, some bad at the Westgate.”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

I was torn when trying to decide whether to give the Westgate in San Diego a 3 or a 4. Truthfully, I would have liked to have given it a 3 and 1/2. Many aspects of this hotel are wonderful, but there were a few things that were not.

My husband and I arrived on Friday night around 11:40. There was one man at the check in desk. He was one of the most rude and condescending people I have ever met. He talked down to us and acted like we were putting him out by checking into the hotel. (We booked the hotel on Hotwire and got a very good deal, I wonder if this was part of the reason). After he handed us our room keys, we asked about parking, he told us there was valet only and that they would be right with us. He then took the car keys and slid a valet claim towards my husband. We stood there, waiting and he stood there as well. After an uncomfortable amount of time I finally asked "Do we need to wait?", he answered "No". My husband asked how we got to our room and he pointed and said, "Um, The elevator", like we were stupid.

Our room was on the 5th floor. The room itself was lovely, comfortable beds, roomy bathroom, nice decor. Unfortunately, our room was located directly over the trolley station. The trolley runs most of the night and blows an extremely loud, deep horn every time in pulls into the station. Needless to say, we did not sleep very well that night. We went to CVS the next day and purchased ear plugs and that helped for the next couple of nights.

The location of the trolley was very convenient, we used it both of the days we went sight seeing, I just wish I wasn't trying to sleep right above it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the opposite side of the trolley station!

Shraddha
Chief Concierge is the person to see in the first place. Her advice is priceless. For the first timers here in San Diego we were lucky to get the best information from her. Highly recommend seeing her if you stay at the Westgate hotel.

I visited San Diego last week with my husband and we loved staying at The Westgate Hotel. Great location, the staff is excellent. We had a beautiful room on the fourteenth floor with great view, extremely clean and comfortable.
The best part of our experience was the phenomenal service, which the chief concierge Shraddha Carlin provided to us. Shraddha is knowledgeable, friendly, full of advice and suggestions.
I would definitely recommend and stay at this hotel in the future.

To Shraddha, Cheif Concierge
Thank you so much for all your wonderful help with our vacation this past October - you helped to make a good vacation - FANTASTIC!!!! You are truly a delightful person and we looked forward to working with you from the moment we walked into lobby! You made us feel like very special, important guests - and since we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary (and the Bronco's win) - I couldn't have asked for anything more. You were helpful and informative and we loved every restaurant, tour, etc. that you helped us arrange! When, not if, we return to The Westgate, it will be because of you! With much gratitude!

Couldn't believe this find and we only stay here when we go to the San Diego area. The outside of the hotel is very contemporary in feel but when you enter it looks like a copy of one of the rooms at Versailles. We were told that it is, indeed, a copy of one of the rooms there... luxury and taste abounds here with a lobby filled with elegance and style. An early original Streinway piano, custom made Baccarat chandeliers, beautiful antique furniture can be found as you enter the lobby... just lovely.

The staff was polite and friendly and more than williing to make your stay comfortable. They went the extra mile to help us when discovered that not all our luggage was delivered by the taxi that brought us there. Much appreciated.

The rooms are very elegant and our suite riveled ones we have stayed in at the Ritz Carlton. In fact, it has the feel of the Ritz Carlton but on a smaller, more intimare scale.

The Sunday Brunch is a 'not-to-be-missed' event. Food is great and when we were there, there was a beautiful harp being played that completed the entire feel of luxury.

The location is great ... close to Gas Lamp District, shops, dining and not far from the waterfront.

We were in San Diego for a large convention held at one of the very large hotels on the waterfront area but wouldn't have traded our room for anything there. Interestingly, many San Diego people didn't even know about it - shocking! We can't say enough about this lovely place and the staff. Lots of fabulous history that you should check with the concierge about. Very interesting.

We will definitely be back!

P.S. I rated the pool area as Excellent even though it wasn't quite completed when we were there but is going to be terrific.

Spent two nights at the Westgate following a cruise. The hotel is close to the Cruise Terminal and despite arriving well before check in time our room mwas available. The entrance to the hotel is impressive with flowwre planters and clasiical music playing. The reception area is spacious and beautifully furnished with period type furniture. The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. Our room which overlooked the city was clean, spacious and beautifully furnished. Location wise it could not be better - a short walk to the Gaslamp Quarter for an amazing array of restaurants and the bay front, Seaport Village, USS Medway are all easily walkable. Trams run adjacent to the hotel. For all these reasons the Westgate is a perfect city hotel and I would recomend it to anyone.
