“Cheap and it Shows”
Reviewed October 1, 2005

We recently stayed at the Vagabond Inn in Point Loma California for a three night stay in San Diego. I had read about this place in the Mobil Travel Guide, which recommended it as inexpensive and clean.

I can say that those two terms together were correct. But what they didn't say was run down.

The location was great - it is located behind the docks next to the Point Loma Seafood's restaurant. We walked to dinner a few nights and other nights, sat at the tables outside after the restaurants closed with a bottle of wine and watched the fishing boats come in. It was also interesting in the morning to walk over and see the overnight boats come in and unload the fish from the boats.

When we checked in, we had booked our room right through the Vagabond Inn's website. The room was supposed to be $79 and $89 per night. We arrived with another couple who booked their room on Travelocity. They got a room in the back of the hotel - we were given a room right next to the office, which was noisy and inconvenient. We requested a room in a different area and were charged an additional $15 per night. Since we clearly did not want the noise next to the office, we grudingly paid the extra money.

Our room was on the second floor. The room was clean and a decent size, but the dresser was very worn. The bathroom, while clean, had a peeling bathtub. (So did our friends' room). There was mismatched bath tiles on the wall and the tub faucet leaked.

The beds were comfortable and the showers nice and hot, but if you are a bath person, stay away - the peeling of the tub was very off putting.

There was a small pool that was located directly on the main road of Scott Street. If it doesn't bother you to swim where traffic from the road is only a few feet away from you, this won't bother you.

Most of the clerks were friendly, but on one occasion an overnight female desk clerk ignored us while she was on the phone with her boyfriend when we were trying to get so information from her.

There is a coffeemaker in each room but ours had a broken top on the pot. There is also none of that powder in the rooms to lighten the coffee if you make it, so we just got coffee in the main office as a continental breakfast was provided, as well as free newspapers. Our friends had a refrigerator in their room and a microwave, ours did not. When we inquired about it, the clerk told us that's just the way it was - some rooms had them, some didn't and they couldn't do anything about the rooms that didn't have them. That was a little off putting - all rooms should be consistent in this travel agents opinion.

The parking lot was very small in the hotel. If you went out and came back after 9:00 PM, you usually had to park on the street.

This hotel is ideal for anyone who is going on a few days of fishing - the location is right next to the boat docks and it was cheap. We loved Point Loma but will go an extra $20 or $30 next time and stay at another hotel in Shelter Island.

When we checked out, a friendly clerk asked where we were going next and we told him San Luis Obispo. He told us there is another Vagabond Inn there and he'd be happy to make us a reservation - we said thanks but no thanks - our experience with staying at a Vagabond Inn is over for this lifetime.

If you search hard, you can find much better for another $20 per night - I wouldn't recommend this chain from our experience.

Ok, here we go. We just got back from San Diego, just a 5 day trip to hang at the beaches and relax. We cut it short one day, because we just weren't comfortable in our hotel. Let me start off by saying the whole staff from the front desk to the cleaning staff were VERY VERY nice, and helpful. However, the rooms lacked in appeal and need MUCH updating. We did notice that most (if not ALL) of the hotels/inns in the area were pretty much the same, and i guess by being spoiled in the past when staying in San Diego this was not what we were expecting, nor from the excellent reviews this motel got. There were ants in the bathroom, the tub just looks gross, no way was i going to go without wearing shoes or socks on that rotten-cheese smelling carpet, and they told us upon check-in that we were ''upgraded'' ... well i would hate to see the regular version...the area is nice and relaxing however, and there is a great restaurant called Pizza Nora just a short walk away. Like some others have said the area is safe enough, and the staff is VERY nice and friendly, but the room itself and the appearance of the place are not worth $95 a night...and don't be fooled by the ''free breakfast'' it consists of a coffee machine and a toaster in the front lobby...but again i can't emphasize enough that the staff were friendly, the pool was clean, and if all you are looking for is a place to lay your head at night, then you've got it, but i would definitely not stay again.

Yes, this is just a motel, but with something extra. My wife and I stayed for 5 nights and had towels and bed linen changed each day we were were there. The rooms were kept very clean. Staff, day or night, were very friendly and the complimentary breakfast was just fine. For those who wanted larger breakfast there is a Denny's within easy walking distance. The location suited us as we flew into Lindbergh Field which is only a couple of miles away and hired a car. We were at the hotel in no time. Shelter Island is a great place to walk in the early morning or late evening and not too far away. Lots of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel and it is in a good location with easy access to the rest of San Diego, be it beaches or downtown.

I was amazed by this hotel... I booked with them based on the #55 rating and the reviews on this website, and couldn't believe that on a weekend where other hotels were $120 a night, this one was only $70, and right at the entrance of Shelter Island, one of my favorite places to walk in San Diego in the morning.

The surprising thing about this hotel is that it looks like a motor inn, but, the service is amazing. Definitely not what you would expect from a small place like this.

If you go, try to get there during the day!! Jose, the front desk clerk then is AWESOME - we checked in and went to our non-smoking room, and as soon as we walked in, we were bombarded with the smell of cigarette smoke. I'm sometimes sensitive to this and sometimes not, but, being almost 6 months pregnant, I was gagging after about 5 seconds, so I went back to Jose. He apologized over and over about the room, and then walked me personally to the next room so that I could look it over and make sure it was okay. From then on, everything was perfect. I happened to walk into the lobby for extra towels about 10 minutes after the complimentary continental breakfast was over, and Jose still made sure to have me look and take whatever I wanted. The night staff isn't rude or anything, they just definitely aren't as great as the day staff.

If you stay here before the summer months, be warned - the "heated" pool isn't kept to a temperature that's comfortable to just jump in to - definitely for the seasoned cold pool swimmers!! Otherwise, this place definitely deserves it's rating in the top quarter of hotels in the area.

Pros: Good prices, very clean, location near the pier.
Cons: Small rooms, very modest breakfast, the restaurant parking lot at the back of the hotel can be rather noisy early morning, uncomfortbale bed.
Though you get a good value for your money here, it is nothing more than a regular budget motel.

I gave this motel the rating due to the price. I paid $60 after tax to stay New Years Eve and found the motel to be clean and comfortable. A free continental breakfast and being next door to Point Loma Seafood's is key. Eat there! This property is close to great restaurants and right next to the landing if you are going fishing. The pool was heated and the room had a small refer and a microwave. The staff was polite and friendly. A bargain!!

We stayed at the Vagabond Point Loma for 5 days in August and thoroughly enjoyed it. The location was close to aiport and was a convenient base for our explorations. There were several nice restauraunts within walking distance. Immediately behind the hotel is a "picnic style" seafood resturant and the sport fishing harbor. It was a fun place to hang out and watch the activity. The hotel is not fancy, but it was quiet, the rooms were clean and the staff was friendly. I would definately return. Check their website for special rates.
