“So much better than recent reviews”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2014

Having just come back from 2wks travelling from San Francisco to San Diego we felt that we had to review The Sheraton hotel . Of the 8 hotels we stayed in this was the only one with recent poor reviews and to be honest we were wondering what we were going to find . We stayed for 4 nights as we wanted to chill in one place after so much travelling. Yes it did take a while to check in but the lady was very helpful and we got a room on the 10th floor of the Marina Tower . The room was lovely and the view amazing . We had a family next door and yes they were noisy one morning but don't stay in a huge family hotel and expect not to hear people ! The room and public areas were clean and I am fussy ! There was a shuttle bus into town for $3 return which was a short ride . Again if you stay in a city you always have to travel to see it and can only choose one location to stay ! The marina area was beautiful and always lots to see from the windows . The beds were really comfortable and all the staff we came across were friendly especially Lindsey who attended to us around the pool bringing us food and drink always with a chat and a smile . The valet parking was expensive but you could park your own for $24 although spaces were limited . The food and drink was of high quality and not over priced for a hotel of this standard . All in all we had a great time here and would not hesitate to return or recommend to others .

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with a marina view.

Beautiful location and hard to beat being right on the water. Friendly staff and great service. I would not hesitate to stay here again when visting the area. Also, very close to the airport so very easy to get in and out of the area. No traffic to the airport.

My husband and I were married at this hotel 15 years ago. This is the 4th time we've been back since. This is a great hotel for those looking for a short trip getaway. And we have had great mini family vacations here every time. It is a big hotel, with an annex about a quarter of a mile away, in what they call the Bay Building. There are also the Lanai Rooms which are connected by a bridge to the towers. Some guests are disappointed, and rightfully so, when they find out that the room they have is in the smaller building and not in the towers. So just beware when booking your rooms. Both the Bay Building and the Lanai Rooms have their own swimming pools, albeit smaller. But this can be a good thing since these pools are usually quieter, with fewer kids/families. The Bay Building also have their own restaurant. Again, everyone's preferences are different. We have stayed in all 3 buildings/annexes and never had an issue. Just keep a vacation mentality, that's all.

This review is for the Towers where we stayed this most recent time. The rooms are clean and have been upgraded since the last time we were here 2 years ago. The beds are comfortable and the rooms have enough space for a family of 4 (parents plus 2 kids). We had a view of the marina which is a lot better than the downtown/Bay view, since you will be looking beyond parking lots to get that view. We have never had a bad service at this hotel. We find that the staff has always been willing to help, if needed.

The only cons I can think of are: 1) You are so close to San Diego airport that when you are sitting in the patio, you can hear the planes taking off. Again, proximity to the airport can be a pro for some people. 2) They do not have enough elevators to service each wing of the Towers. But, I suppose, this is a common issue with large resort hotels that we have stayed in. 3) Parking is expensive but then again, this is the going rate for any hotel in a large metro area.

The location is great if you like to be close to downtown attractions without being in the midst of the downtown bustle. There are limited restaurant choices in the hotel and be prepared to pay hotel prices for the food. However, about a 10 minute walk along Harbor Drive (or 3 minute drive) from the hotel is Level C restaurant, great view and seafood restaurant. Also, about 10 minutes away is Liberty Station with a lot of restaurants (Slater's 50/50, Con Pane Breads, Chi Chocolatier, Five Guys, Corvette Diner, Stone Brewing Bistro, Solare Restaurant) and a Trader Joe's.

For recreation, you can rent bikes (or bring your own). There is a beautiful 4 mile bike path from the hotel to Seaport Village downtown. Right at the hotel marina is SD Adventures, a rental place for water activities. We've rented kayaks, SUPs and waverunners here. You can spend a whole day on the water.

Overall, it is a great hotel for a nice getaway. And the positives (location, amenities) outweigh the cons.

Room Tip: Request a room in the higher floors of main towers, not the Bay building or Lanai.

I was here for a conference- 2nd year in a row.... I was checked into a room that still had people in it. The bar even on weekends closes way too early and that is with the place still packed.... Why would they force their guests to walk to their other hotel or down to the gas light district instead of the big money we were spending- doesn't make any sense!!!! The GM needs to step up to the plate -- this location definitely does not live up to the high end Sheratons around the country.

Thank you for your review and recent stay at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. It is always gratifying when we can create a welcoming experience for our guests. This is why your story is so upsetting to hear and we are deeply disappointed about how far short we fell of your expectations beginning at arrival.

The lack-luster assistance you received is unacceptable and will surely be addressed. Please accept our apology and take note that this is not the norm for our hotel. Providing impeccable service is essential to our goal of creating a home away from home and your comments will prove valuable to our ongoing efforts.

Thank you again for your review. We hope to welcome you back for another opportunity to demonstrate the potential of our hotel.

Took me four return trips to the front desk to get a room that wasn't on a floor in use for a convention, already occupied, not made up. Front desk had only one person that had a clue about customer service. The rooms are clean and spacious. The views on both sides are excellent, but overall this property is in need of an overhaul in the common areas.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing downtown and on floor 8, or higher.

Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina
We did NOT stay in the Sheraton Hotel, we were put in a shady motel (they called it the Lanai tower) that was connected by a bridge. If I wanted to stay in a motel I would have booked a Motel 6 for $80 a night, not the Sheraton for over $200 a night! When we walked out of our room we walked right into a parking lot with a walkway that had filthy carpet. Seriously, who puts carpet outdoors? We were told when booking we would have a private patio with a view of the bay or downtown San Diego. We had neither! Our patio was an extension of the pool deck with no view and no privacy at all! We could not even open the blinds because everyone at the pool could see in our room. The noise from the pool kept us up late and woke us up very early. We called guest services about our issues more than once and NO ONE ANSWERED! There was no available self parking spots so we were forced to valet for $32 a day. They also charge for every little thing including WiFi. This place is not up to Sheraton standards and I will never stay here again. Sheraton should be ashamed to put their name on this property!

Room Tip: Make sure you specify that you want the Marina tower or you will be sent to their motel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
San Diego has established itself as a destination featuring world class spirit with genuine warmth. The Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina offers an authentic San Diego experience. Iconic sunsets and a waterfront destination…it’s comfortably upscale without pretense. As an architectural cornerstone positioned at the point of entry into the city - by air or sea - the imposing facade of the hotel reflects an architectural design inspired by the region’s naval influence. In the mid 1800s, city leaders realized the potential of the San Diego Bay and, with the anticipation of the opening of the Panama Canal, the importance of improving the harbor for commerce. Significant modifications were needed to the Bay to accommodate large ships. As a result, Harbor and Shelter Island were developed, as well as much of the land beneath the San Diego International airport. Today’s San Diego has evolved into a place to meet and share inspiration. Overlooking the scenic San Diego Bay and a private marina, the hotel is a place where San Diego soul and contemporary style go hand and hand. A Bayside resort with urban accessibility, the hotel is a waterfront hub connecting you to the destination’s renowned attractions. Ideally located within easy reach, the historic Liberty Station, the waterfront districts of Point Loma, the energy of Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter offer convenient, lively dining and entertainment venues. Amongst exquisite lifestyle decor and a relaxing atmosphere, the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina reflects a perfect haven for the active lifestyle that is woven deep into the region’s DNA. There are waterside fire pits and three pools - each with a unique personality. But most importantly, the hotel is designed to make best use of San Diego’s average 72 degree year-round sunny weather. Sitting on the dock of the Bay, the hotel offers access to water sport rentals and sailing tours to provide an extraordinary perspective of San Diego. Along with the diversity that found home in San Diego, the intense energy that the destination acquired offers a remarkably unique experience. Naturally, this energy worked its way into the foundation of the hotel. From the moment of arrival, the hotel is designed to offer a scenic environment with unmatched flexibility and capability. The nautically inspired guest rooms and suites come with an elegant array of amenities and social enabling conveniences. Social travelers seeking something astonishing can choose one of the spacious and well equipped suites for a unique and luxurious home away from home. Reflecting the needs of the world’s social traveler, a great hotel is built with much more than awe-inspiring design. The Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina enlists a warm, friendly and tenured staff that is connected to the urban energy of downtown San Diego. ... more   less
