Show lessI recently visited San Diego for the first time, on a business trip. Our party stayed at this hotel. Overall it was comfortable, good but not outstanding. It's the type of place I'd be okay with for a personal vacation, but not great when traveling on business.
The room was very nice, looking like it had been renovated recently. New furniture, modern decorations, comfortable bed, decent shower. The vanity is separate from the toilet/bathtub, located right by the front door. I guess this would be a good arrangement if you were traveling as a couple or family, with multiple people needing bathroom time. I did notice some old water damage in the corner of the ceiling (see pic), so the reno's haven't been THAT extensive. Also, I could hear the people in the room above me during my first night; nothing excessive, but not the greatest sound-proofing. My room did have a balcony, but the view from the back of the building is not exactly spectacular (see pic).
I liked the WiFi service; the connection was established easily and bandwidth was good. And the hotel has a breakfast room open from 6-10am, where you self-serve the typical continental breakfast items (pastries, yogurt, toast, bagels, fruit, coffee, tea, juice, etc.). There are no other amenities though, like a pool, fitness room, bar, lounge, meeting room, etc. There is a SMALL sitting area by the front desk (where they also serve free coffee), but you wouldn't hang out there.
The location is pretty good. It's about a 15-min. taxi ride from the airport, and the harbor is a 20-min. walk due west. The entire downtown is quite walkable, and you could enjoy a whole day strolling and exploring, and yet not be too far from the hotel.
My only disappointment was that we stayed here in part because the hotel sounded like it catered to business folks, since the name mentions "Convention Center". It does NOT have a convention center, nor ANY facilities for business meetings. The group I was traveling with had to go off-site every time we wanted to meet, which is not ideal (even the nearest Starbucks is a few blocks away). So that part was misleading.
All that said, I would consider staying here again if I was traveling for pleasure, because the free breakfast was pretty good, and a nice bonus. But if I need to come back for work, I'll stay elsewhere.
Thanks for staying with us at Days Inn San Diego Downtown/Convention Center. We appreciate your detailed and thorough review. We are glad that you noticed our many upgrades, and look forward to serving you again the next time you visit.
