Old Town Inn is a great Budget Hotel. The rooms were clean and well kept. The staff was very helpfull and freindly. They have a great morning breakfast. The downside is the noise. You can hear the conversations, tv's from the rooms next door. The traffic from the very busy Pacific Hwy is always a constant. With all things considered - would stay here again.

My wife and I stayed here on the advice of another travel forum and I wish we would of never listened to them.
The motel is in the worst area that I could see in San Diego and we had our rental car broken into at our motel along with alot of homeless people sleeping right next door to the motel and it was very very noisy because of the trolley and you are under a busy freeway.
For the price of $90 a night, we could of stayed in a better area of San Diego. There seems to be alot of night girls in the area trying to make there money.
The motel is ok but the location is awful!

Well its a Motel and lets face it you usally cannot expect much from a Motel except a place to lay your head. Well we were pleasantly surprised to find a Motel with a nice clean room, great breakfast, warm pool, cheerful greetings and very helpful with directions and things to do. If you are looking for just a nice place to stay that is reasonable than this is it. It is not the Marriot (although I recieved better guest relations at the Inn than with most Marriots) so do not expect it, what it is is a great place to rest up and recoup for the next day. When we travel we are hardly at the hotel except to sleep and eat and the Old Town in satisfys this better than most. It is well located between Sea World (5min) the Zoo (10min) and Old Town just across the street relativly speaking. It is on a 6 lane road but we found no noise from the road to be bothersome.

To summ it up Great place to stay cheaply with a fantastic continetal breakfast.

Sincerly

Old Town Inn is fine for the price (we paid $77 on a Saturday night) but it is not "across the street" from Old Town like they told me. It is across a major highway from the trolley stop which can take you to Old Town, or you can walk a block or two to get there. The room was small but clean and adequate to bathe and sleep. The walls are thin, so it can be noisy. The breakfasts looked fine for young families, but we chose to eat elsewhere. Also, when you book, ask for a room away from the major highway which also can get noisy.

Not a 5-star or top-10 hotel/motel. I think the problem is that people are normalizing the review based on the cost, but I'm not going to do that. If you're willing to put up with the few issues, then it's an awesome bargain. I would have given it 3.5 stars, but since I can't, I've rounded up.

Most of the reviews (good and bad) are pretty much right on. First, the good:
1) As mentioned, great bargain ... ~ $100/night for a double queen deluxe
2) Very good location - walking distance to Old Town and the Trolley station; minutes from Sea World, downtown, the airport, and the Zoo
3) Great breakfast (as everyone mentions) - it can easily save you a lot of money if you normally eat a big breakfast with a family <BR>
4) Very clean and nice decorum in the rooms, lobby, and poolside

Now the bad:
1) This is by far the noisiest hotel/motel we've ever stayed in. And we've stayed in all different types of places, from old boutique hotels in busy downtown areas to the cheapest Motel 6 by a busy highway. And this noise is all internal, not from the nearby highway. During the busy time when most rooms are occupied, you can hear everything above you and on both sides. Every footstep sounds like an elephant stampede. Every bath or shower sounds like Niagra Falls. You can even hear conversations, drawers opening/closing, and faucets being turned. And this was in the new section. Luckily my 5 year old sleeps through everything and we are usually up by 6:30, or we would have been even more annoyed. When I mentioned this to the desk person as we were checking out, she said we should have stayed on the 3rd floor. Perhaps they can pre-warn people if 3rd floor rooms are still available.
2) The pool is basically useless, exept for probably July/August. It is small, and even though it is heated (supposedly) to 82deg, it is freezing. The entire week we were there, we saw a total of 2 kids using it. Perhaps we are too use to 90deg+ lake temps in Texas. ;)
3) Only one desk person at any time, even during the busy weekends, can make for a long wait.
All that said, we had a great 1 week trip and would recommend this motel for the budget conscious (and deep sleepers).

Front Desk: Staff was consistently very friendly, knowledgeable, and prepared to answer our questions. They seemed to appreciate our business! They provided their own info sheets on public transit, and mapped out some of the best restaurants within walking distance.

Room: pleasant décor, perfectly clean. Beds were fine. Ours was an economy room, $58 in late April, so there was no microwave/blow dryer/fridge.

Breakfast: Very clean, pleasant, indoor breakfast room, with waffles, variety of flavoured and plain bagels fresh each morning, cream cheese, jams, bread, various flavours of hot oatmeal pouches and cold cereals, pastries, muffins, apples, oranges, milk, juice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate. Hot beverages were available all day and evening.

Hotel Grounds: Nice landscaping, plants everywhere, a pretty fountain, and lights on the trees at night. Heated pool, looked clean, patio furniture to sit poolside.

Location: Across the street (5 minute walk) from the Old Town Amtrak & Trolley/Bus Station (very good public transit system with frequent service to Sea World, downtown Amtrak station, Balboa Park, La Jolla). Old Town has many Mexican restaurants and shops, most within a 10-minute walk. The area appears to be fairly safe, even at night. The transit station seems to have security guards on duty most of the time.
