“Perfect fit for a long weekend vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2009

My fiance and I traveled to San Diego for a vacation over a long weekend in June. We did a lot of research prior to the vacation to find a hotel that would fit our needs of location, moderate cost, pool, free breakfast, and overall value. I was having a very difficult time finding a hotel under $250/night that had decent reviews and had the important amenities we were looking for (e.g. accessible to restaurants, pool, breakfast). We were very pleased with our choice of the Ocean Park Inn and glad that we positioned our vacation in Pacific Beach.

Prior to booking a room, I called the front desk to ask about the difference types of rooms and which rooms were affected by the neighboring bar's noise (from prior reviews). We booked a limited view king-bed room on the hotel website because it was the best value in our opinion (compared to the slightly more expensive partial view and most expensive ocean view); the front desk let us check out a partial view room when we arrived in case we wanted to upgrade. We stayed with our limited view room because it had better light / larger sliding glass door and was conveniently on the ground floor so we could walk right out to the hotel pool every day. There are partitions between the rooms and the pool, so we didn't feel that there was less privacy from facing the pool on the ground floor. If any rooms have less privacy it would be the ocean front rooms because the hotel is only a few feet off the boardwalk. But the views of the ocean surf are fantastic! We walked out to the Crystal Pier for amazing sunsets when we weren't enjoying the sunset at a boardwalk restaurant.

The room was clean and updated, slightly unexpected after reading prior posts, with the exception of the outdated light teal bathroom (but it was very spacious and clean so we didn't mind). Our king bed was comfortable (and huge!), we had a mini-fridge to stock beer and snacks for pool time, and we were happy with the very convenient location right on the boardwalk and within walking distance of many restaurants along the Pacific Beach area. Our room had a loveseat, small closet, wardrobe, and a desk.

We rented a car for our vacation so that we could explore other neighborhoods every morning until the sun came out around noon every day. Parking was very reasonable ($10) whereas it seems that every other hotel in the San Diego area charged $30/day! We enjoyed being able to drive straight down Garnet Ave (only a block or two north of Grand Ave) to Trader Joe's for getting beer, wine, and snacks. We were able to look up restaurants, directions, and lots of info on their FREE wireless internet connection, which was great and rare! Bring your laptop!

The front desk was very helpful, in allowing us to ensure we had chosen the best room for us, recommending restaurants and other helpful suggestions. Jay, especially, was very friendly and helpful. After reading reviews that the front desk was staffed by teenage kids that didn't care about their customers, this was a relief.

Breakfast was a little spare, but they had cereal, bagels, juice, yogurt, and (cheap) coffee. We were expecting the Belgian waffle maker previously mentioned or at least something with a little protein, so it was disappointing, but free. There was a family there telling us about all the great breakfast fare (eggs, waffles) they enjoyed during their stay there a few months earlier, so I know they have the ability to provide a more satisfying breakfast! It was apparently not busy enough that weekend to provide their superior breakfast foods. All-in-all, this was a great choice for us.

Pros: free wireless internet! free breakfast until 10am, enclosed outdoor pool (for wind protection), right on boardwalk, clean/bright rooms and good value, unlimited towels for pool/beach, affordable private parking, friendly employees, and great location in Pacific Beach neighborhood to ocean and nearby restaurants (see other TripAdvisor reviews: try the Green Flash and the Fishery, avoid Gringos Cantina)...

Cons: breakfast a little minimal, hot tub turns off at 10pm, can be noisy but only if in a room facing bar behind the hotel (ask front desk), no onsite restaurant but they offer room service from the neighboring bar & grill (Firehouse?)...

THis place is in a goiod location if you want to be on the boardwalk and next to the beach. But its also located less than 20 feet from a very hip and loud nightclub. At night there are drunk kids roaming around outside till 3 or 4 in the morning. the hotel is definately in need of some updating as well. Overall it wasn't a bad experience, but if you are loooking for a nice quiet place to stay on the ocean this is not the place.

We just returned from a weeklong stay in San Diego. Originally we were at the Hilton downtown, but it was so impersonal and cold. Early on we walked by the Ocean Park Inn and on a lark asked about room rates & availability. This hotel is directly on the beach and at the end of the PB where all the cool restaurants and bars are - all within easy walking distance. The staff was so friendly - always saying hello when you came in, offering suggestions for restaurants, etc. The rates were about $70/night less than what we were paying at the Hilton, parking was nominal, there was a heated pool and free breakfast included. We were so glad to have stumbled across this location and would stay there again in a second!

Stayed in family room with 5 friends. Beautiful views from balcony. Great pool and the hotel is as close to the beach as you can get! The staff in the hotel were really friendly and helped us out alot. Great hotel, great location.

This hotel was a huge disappointment. We spent over $250./night for an outdated, timeworn room. Sure it looked at the water but the room was so dingy we left the curtains and window open to cheer it up and take the staleness out of the carpets.(torn and stained carpets) The bathrooms are as worn and outdated as the rooms. The refrigerator didn't work and the hallway carpets had vomit stains and smelled like they hadn't been shampooed in years! The only plusses are that the beds were comfortable and the housekeeping crew kept the hotel clean. The front desk crew are a nice group of 20-yr. olds. They seemed apolegetic for the rooms but what could they do, they only work there. DO NOT book a room through Orbitz or Expedia for this hotel! They will give you a sub-standard room ,on the ground floor, facing a wall! The manager said she had to use those rooms because she has to give Orbitz 30%. She charged me an additional $60/night to get something decent and then told me I was getting a deal! I will not ever recommend this hotel to friend or enemy! I just want to qualify my complaints by saying I am a savvy traveller. I have had the opportunity to travel a lot. I know when I'm getting ripped off!

We booked the Ocean Park Inn after a lot of research and were very pleased with our visit. The hotel is located in a prime beachfront location. We requested and received a third floor ocean view room. Our room was very clean and spacious, with an excellent view of the boardwalk and beach. The hotel overall was well-kept and the staff was very courteous. The complementary breakfast was nothing special, but it was adequate.

Some helpful things to know:

1. Request an ocean view room - especially if you want quiet. The back side of the hotel faces a lively night spot - the Firehouse. The music was loud, but the fish tacos and the rooftop dining were wonderful!

2. We booked our reservation directly on the Hotel's website. They offered an online promotion that beat any other rate we could find.

3. Parking is $10 per night and very tight. Not a problem at this time of year, but could be difficult in a busier season.

3. There is a very nice grocery across the street and many good restaurants in easy walking distance.

4. Coronado, Balboa Park, and the Gaslamp District are all well worth a visit. We only wish we'd had more time!

This is a really great place to stay if you'd like to have an ocean view balcony right off the boardwalk.
I stayed with 2 friends for a weekend getaway and we enjoyed our stay.
The hotel staff was very helpful and actually took extra time to give us local information and good spots the locals like to go too.
We booked a balcony room and it was one with the direct view of the ocean...fabulous!!! We were able to enjoy the sound of the waves and see the beautiful sunsets.
The hotel has a deluxe free breakfast and it was actually quite tasty. There is fresh fruit a waffle maker and many other breakfast goodies. They also have 24hr coffee and juices at no charge in the lobby as well as a coffeemaker in the rooms.
Overall the hotel stay was very enjoyable the room was clean and in a great location. The hotel is a bit dated but not enough to change my option of our stay. The one thing I will say that was a bit of a problem is the parking. There is a $10.00 a day charge and the parking garage is rather tight and if you are there during high season it may be difficult to get a spot. The parking is ONLY for the guest so there should be enough for everyone but some of the cars were parked in 2 spaces so it was tight. Oh yes, and they have an outside hottub and great pool.

We would stay again and really enjoyed the hotel, breakfast, hottub, pool and espeicallly the location!!!!
