“Property has it's apeal... Don't listen to negative people who have negative thoughts”
Reviewed April 9, 2009

Property is not a 6 star resort, but certainly has it's own appeal. With a resturaunt on property, convienence store which is open til midnight, a tavern (bar) with pool tables and wide screen television, not to mention....FREE USAGE OF FROGS GYM, 27000 Square foot health club. Who in their right mind would not want to stay there. I can honestly say that the rooms need some upgrades, but it's certainly not a motel 6. The staff there are wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. I would most definately return and stay there again. Room rates are affordable!!!!!
Unfortunately the reviews are old and out dated as you can see.....So before you knock it you need to try this property at least once...Then give your opion.

We stayed at the Mission Valley Resort for three nights after a cruise. It's OK - reasonable value for money. It's a traditional motel style resort which is rather tired and in need of renovation. The rooms are OK but quite small, especially by American standards. The pool area is quite scruffy and definitely needs some work. The restaurant there is good - especially for breakfast - with good value, well cooked meals and excellent service.

Our main problem with the hotel is its location. It's on Hotel Circle and the only public transport is a bus that comes past every hour. You can get the bus to the tram station, and the trams are great. They run regularly (every 10-15 minutes depending on the line). You can use them to get to most of the areas you are likely to want to visit in San Diego. It cost $5 for a 1 day pass which you can use on both the trams and buses - a really good way to get around.

We thought that the Holiday Inn On The Bay was in a much better location, being nearly on the waterfront and close to the tram line between Oldtown and Downtown

This is NOT a family hotel. It is dated and in need of major repairs. Our room smelled like musky paint fumes. When we changed rooms, one of the employees told us that they just painted the tubs in that building and told the management that they should not rent them two days so the paint could dry. As soon as the water hit the tub the room fumed up again. We couldn't air the room due to the ripped sceens and broken a/c. Aside of being outdated, the rooms weren't very clean.

There were two pool areas and both were very clean and tidy. There are apartments on the hill above with quite the audience looking down on the hotel pools. (Not a relaxing feeling.)

The "convenience store" listed is actually a liquor store and the bar has a questionable crowd hanging around. The diner needed a lot of updating and you could smell the grease from the parking lot. They had good deserts though and the gals were really nice and sociable.

We arrived after 6pm and even though we guaranteed our rooms with a credit card, they still managed to give our rooms to someone else and we had to settle for different room types. (No apologies were extended.) There was one very helpful desk clerk and the rest didn't want to be bothered with anyone but the "friends" they were chatting with behind the desk. And forget about getting an accurate wake up call.

Oh, did I mention some dingbat knocked over a fire hydrant and the parking lot was flooded and blocked off for 10 hours? This was an embarrassing choice of hotels for the guest we booked for. Nope, never in a million years would I ever stay at this hotel again.

We stayed in room 451 at the Mission Valley Resort for 2 nights in October 08. We wanted to stay at a nice, lower priced ($99 night) hotel that was still kinda close to downtown.
The staff were all friendly and helpful but the rooms and property are in need of some work. My room had the following issues: stained carpet and ceiling, extremely small bathroom and shower with peeling wallpaper and very dirty shelves, broken security latch on the inside of our door, and a TV that made a constant screeching noise when turned on. It seems like the owners have tried to improve the rooms with newer furniture and bedding but there is so many more improvements that need to be made. Most of the property and rooms are just simply old and beat up.
We did enjoy the Valley Tavern on the property which served warm appetizers during it's daily Happy Hour starting at 4:00. Thursday they served Taquitos and Friday it was Calimari Rings so that was one of the few highlights.
When we checked out we were charged a daily $1.11 Safe Warranty charge and a 2% Tourism Marketing Fee which was $1.98 a day. Seems like bogus charges to me but I wasn't in the mood to fight them on it, so I let it slide. We were not made aware of these charges when checking in either.
Given it's present condition, I do not think I would stay at this Hotel again.

  • Liked — The tavern and the close proximity to the freeway in hotel circle.
  • Disliked — The condition of the rooms and property.

I don't really understand all the negative reviews. We live in San Diego and need an inexpensive place to stay for 2 nights while we had some work done on our home. We also have a pet which really limited our choices. We picked the MVR primarily for the price and were really nervous about all the negative reviews.

The MVR was perfect. The staff was friendly and professional, (we had a VERY early check-in), the grounds immaculate and for an older facility, the renovated room was clean and inviting. The TV had lots of channels and the AC worked just great. We had a little trouble with the phone and maintenance came immediately to take care of it. The pool (heated?) was large and spotless as was the jacuzzi (perfect temperature)

It is an older hotel so don't expect the Four Seasons or the Ritz Carlton and it is also a large place so there may be some areas of the hotel that have not gotten renovated and may explain the awful reviews.

And though we were not tourists the location can't be beat for those that are. All of this plus the rate (less than $100/night) make its a great hotel at a great value. For us, and the price, it was perfect.

This hotel was the worst one I have ever stayed in. Many family members stayed here since we were attending a wedding that was held at the "resort". The room smelled like a boys locker room. It was dirty, the wallpaper was peeling, we had ants in the bathroom. The linen was very old and thin. Other family members had similar rooms. Several of us complained and were told if we didn't like it we could just leave. Unfortunately our rooms were already paid for. Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else!

We arrived and checked in within 5 minutes. We had a large room with 2 queen beds opposite the swimming pool.

I can recommend the hotels eating house the food was very good and a resonable price too.

You deffinately need a car if you stay here. and would receommend the hotel to my friends.
