“Good location and views, but service is not up to the price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2012

This is a huge, Las Vegas style conference hotel, designed to deal with masses of guests. We found it not to be the best choice for independent travelers. The location is convenient to the Gaslamp district, and other tourist attractions. Such things as getting your car out can take a while, though. We are Platinum Elite, which gives us upgrades and other benefits, and that's one reason we chose this place. But the special Elite check-in desk was manned by an amazingly unfriendly and uncooperative person. She went through an odd lecture about the benefits we would be receiving (as if we'd never experience Elite level before), but made sure we got only the minimum benefits. When we booked the room, we'd been told by the people at Marriott's reservation line that at least one of the Concierge Lounges would be open while we were here (weekend prior to New Years), and we were looking forward to having breakfast, evening snacks, etc. She made clear that no lounge would be open and we would be entitled only to a breakfast coupon for one day of our stay. We didn't get upgraded, though the hotel was half empty. She set the tone for the rest of our stay. Despite the hotel's size, there are few choices for dining on premises. The Marina Kitchen is essentially a wildly overpriced Applebee's - simple comfort food and poorly trained kids who don't watch the tables, preferring to stop by from time to time, one after another, to say "how is the pie, good?" - preferably when your mouths are full, walking away before you can answer. The other choice is Roy's, a "Hawaiian Fusion" chain restaurant where the view is the attraction and the prices are presumably for expense accounts. Better to leave the premises and walk over to the Gaslamp district, which has great choices in every price range. Note that on Sundays there's a farmer's market on Third Ave, a few blocks away, with vendors selling great ethnic street food.

Room Tip: Do not let them put you in a "city view" room. These are right above a stop on the trolley...

In town for a conference...found location to be easily accesible from airport and to Gaslamp district for dinners/evening out. Rooms were great, very clean. Pool/outside bar are enjoyable if you have time. Ready access to Marina boardwalk was a plus for jogging/running, people watching. Would definitely stay again.

Stayed here for a conference at the adjoining convention centre. Very nice setting and the hotel offers some nice restaurants as well, including a poolside one. As a Canadian visiting in November, it was a treat to be able to eat outside and feel some warmth!

I had an '00' room which had a little balcony facing the marina (I think in the South tower but sorry, can't remember). My colleague in the same tower had an '03' room which had a bigger balcony facing directly to the marina. The rooms were a bit on the small side but clean. The hotel itself though is a bit pricy--our rooms were ~$215/night at that was at the conference discounted rate. OK for traveling for business, but for personal travel, I'd find a cheaper hotel or at least try for a cheaper rate.

Unfortunately, didn't get a chance to see much of the city.

FANTASTIC place to stay. Convenient location, great views, wonderful service! Highly recommend. Front desk staff was helpful, efficient and courteous. If you are attending anything at the conference center, this hotel is the absolute best place to stay due to its proximity to the venue. Take a sailing excursion that departs right outside the back entrance to the hotel!

Room Tip: Choose a balcony room for the best views.

On a whim, we flew out to San Diego ...somewhere we have never stayed. The hotel is next to a beautiful convention centre and as such seems a perfect venue for large groups. However, it was a quiet time during the three nights we stayed and we very much enjoyed the hotel and the area. The first room was on the 25th Floor and we could hear the airconditioning units on the roof and the chairs even vibrated with the sound. So we moved to room 2329 and it looked out (north tower) over the marina. Large, done in the early 80's concept, but completely re-decoratred. Did not have a large enough sink area for two, but the balcony and the room itself more than made up for this. The staff is lovely, although we did not receive a call back when inquiring about a small meeting room...we just went next door to the Hilton. But this should not have occurred. The restaurant is where this property excels. It is incredible. Beautiful only opening in May, new concept of living room areas and a wonderful Chef and pastry chef. We were really impressed. Fitness club is great also, large, with lots of everything. All in all, it was a wonderful time and we are thinking to re-visit when we can. Marriott is always consistent and we also like the proximity of the airport to the hotel area. You do not need a car. In fact there is a train that goes to LA outside of the door and a local train that goes to just about any area nearby. We walked to see Midway Battleship and it was well worth the visit, and also to Gaslamp District, which is no big deal, just lots of restaurants, but still you can walk there. There are endless things to do here and with more time, we could have branched out. We think this Marriott is a terrific choice for your stay.

I usually prefer Hyatt and Hilton to Marriott, but this particular Marriott was great! Check-in was fast and friendly. Our room was in the south tower facing the marina. This was a free upgrade considering we paid for a city view and booked through Expedia. The room was spacious & clean with lots of pillows and hangers. Our large walk-in shower was a plus. The bed could have been better, as it was not as comfy as the typical Westin heavenly bed or pillow top provided by Hilton and Hyatt hotels. I expected more for a "marquis" property. Surprisingly, our mini bar wasn't stocked either. They would have made some money off us on drinks, but oh well, we drank tap water much to our disappointment. The next night I searched for a vending machine, since the shops were all closed. I asked the front desk where we could buy water and they just handed us two bottles for free. Nice touch but would have been better if it was just provided in the room. I still gave them five stars because everything else here is spot-on. As others have stated, the location can't be beat. You have the ferry to Coronado at your back door, Seaport Village and marina next door, and Gas Lamp across the street. What more can you ask for? The property is pleasant on the eyes and very clean. All of the staff including the guys at the front door are friendly. We didn't eat or drink here, but the pool bar & fire pits looked fun. I would definitely stay here again if in town. This hotel is great for either a convention or a romantic getaway.

I've stayed at numerous Marriotts and I must say that this one was by far the nicest one. The hotel was at full capacity so we didn't get a balcony or the North Tower but did get a room facing the marina. The rooms are very large and clean. A nice perk is that the bathroom has a walk-in shower and no tub.

The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the Gaslamp Quarter and 5 minute walk to the Seaport Village. The front desk staff and concierge are friendly.

If you're looking to go to the zoo, you can purchase tickets at the concierge desk.
My only complaint is that concierge did not arrive until 8 am Saturday morning (I was told because of holiday hours). Does that mean they normally arrive later? If you are like us and want to enjoy breakfast at Richard Walker's Pancake House (5 minutes away), you will have to come back to the concierge desk to buy tickets or buy tickets the day before.
The grounds and pool (which unfortunately we didn't get the opportunity to enjoy) are tropical looking and have a resort-like feel.
Overall, this was a good quality hotel for 3 nights.
