“Great location, nice rooms.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2014

For a very large "conference hotel," this property does a great job. Common areas are comfortable and well maintained. Staff are all very polite and welcoming. The rooms are very comfortable. The location is great, within walking distance to many sights. The pool area is very large, and the health club is good. Views from upper floors can be stunning. Since I was there for a conference, the wifi was free, which was an added bonus. There are plenty of restaurant choices nearby. The only downside is the breakfast buffet, "Lael's", is over priced at $25. Avoid the buffet and visit a couple of the funky little breakfast places in the marina village just out the back door from Lael's. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: Even number rooms in the Harbor Tower have good views.

One of the most comfortable hotel beds I've even experienced. I had a king bed room in the Harbor tower and it was quite large. The sofa in front of the window was vinyl and not too welcoming, but it was right next to the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on San Diego harbor and downtown (very nice!). Room was nice and clean. Windows opened safely so that I could get fresh air 22 floors up. Didn't ask front desk for much but when I did they were kind and prompt. The wifi was good (and free because the conference I was attending at the hotel paid for it).

The shop off the lobby is overpriced, as was the lobby bar ($9.50 for a bad glass of pinot grigio) and the 40th floor bar is indeed stuffy. I sat at the counter at the back of the Top of the Hyatt and a stairwell separates the counter from being against the window, making for an awkward view. There are grocery stores blocks away (not close but not TOO far) if you want to get a bottle of wine and skip the risk of overpaying for something that's not properly chilled. Stash it in the room's mini-fridge. The breakfast buffet is also overpriced -- $18.50 for cereal, fruit and danishes? But the staff was friendly.

I'm sure it's a great hotel for families, but there were a lot of different conventions when I was there for just four days. Even still, the main bar is the only place where you really feel the hustle and bustle.

Room Tip: Opt for the Harbor Tower on the odd-numered-room side. Nice view of downtown, San Diego Bay and even...

I had an excellent stay at the beginning of March for a conference visit.

PROS:
-at check in I was informed that the hotel had been overbooked (what?), but they were paying for our night at the hotel next door (the San Diego Marriot Marquis and Marina) and even payed for a taxi to take us from the hotel next door
-very helpful front desk. Lost my key once and they were able to replace without any hassle
-my husband loved the gym. Said it was very well appointed with actual free weights.
-WiFi was free due to conference
-easy accessibility to walk around to different areas
-comfortable room, great housekeeping
-mini-fridge in room
-two tennis courts

CONS:
-little bit of an outside walk to the conference center (not a big deal unless you were there in the worst storm they've had in 4 years like I was)

Overall I really enjoyed our stay and would stay there again on business.

Great views of the Bay Area from my room - stayed in the harbor tower 9th floor. Wifi was free complimentary because of the conference I attending. The workout room was insanely hot. No air circulation whatsoever so you will sweat profusely. The lobby is pretty! As for the room itself, the tv channel selection isn't great. Was glad to have a fridge, and the bed was comfy. Overall, it was a nice stay!

The hotel itself is quite good, with spotless and modern rooms and, dare I say, a majestic entrance and lobby.

Bed was comfy, but the shower head is at chest level, and I'm 6' 0". I liked being reminded of Europe, but didn't like ducking.

Staff were pinnacle of professionalism, from room service (fast!) to bellhops (super friendly and efficient).

Location is great, with the conference center, Midway museum, and lots of restaurants and bars all within walking distance, as well as a Ralph's grocery/supermarket, which is great for stocking the mini-fridge with half-n-half (for the decent in-room coffee), yogurt, fruit (and, yes, wine) for much cheaper than the hotel market in the lobby (which should be open 24/7 and is not).

The "rooftop" bar in one of the towers was a little disappointing, as it was fully indoors and actually a little warm and stuffy, I was hoping for something open and refreshing. Bartender was great, however

The views of the bay from the high floors are incredible, with the airport clearly visible, helicopters in formation constantly coming and going from the naval base, all kinds of boat traffic, from cruise ships to what looked like the special forces' inflatables, and more than 1 aircraft carrier.

The fact that the windows open is wonderful, but it does let in the dull roar of commercial jet takeoffs, and you can hear the helis coming long before you see them. I certainly didn't mind, and with the windows closed it's almost unnoticeable, but, FYI, the view comes with a sonic accompaniment.

I'd definitely stay on business here again, but the Marriott next door also looked pretty decent.

Came to DT SD for a little weekend staycay.... & my husband and I decided to come back to this hotel. We've stayed here once before pre-update to the rooms (they were nice then too). But for this trip, let me start at the beginning... the staff is excellent. Super friendly and made us comfortable right away. Offered us water! Our room was updated (they did a fantastic job!!!) and we had a phenomenal view. Although, I don't think there is a bad view in the house. Best beds, pillows, everything EVER! Pretty much all of downtown San Diego is walkable from here and there is a trolley stop right outside (Seaport Village stop). There's the old Police Station that has been vacant forever; has now been updated to a little shopping/restaurants space. It's great! Good shops and good restaurants... definitely go check this out. There is also the ferry stop to Coronado literally right outside the back of the hotel. Close distance to the Convention Center, Petco Park, and the Midway too. Seaport Village is next door. If you've never been to San Diego before, then what the heck; go check it out, but don't waste too much time there... There is so many great places around downtown for food/shopping. Considering I'm from San Diego, and thankfully we have a lot of nice hotels/restaurants.shops.... this place is impressive.

Room Tip: No bad view in the house. Obviously, the higher in the building, the better.

I've stayed in a lot of hotels in San Diego and I have to say, they pretty much always tend to be nice. This hotel is no exception.

The room was nice and clean. I always inspect my mattresses for bed bugs and my mattresses here were particularly new and clean. There was a lot going on in the hotel at the time and it felt alive, but not hectic. The fitness center is great.

I didn't really have a meal on the property but I did stop by the gift shop for a smart water and luna bar, which cost me $14 (!!) so I wasn't impressed with that, but at least they had smart water and luna bars, along with a nice array of other snacks.

The other SD hotels I can remember staying at recently include the Hotel Del Coronado (favorite), Hyatt Mission Bay (also nice), Hilton San Diego Bayfront (very nice) and Sheraton Carlsbad (pretty nice). Perhaps you can't go wrong in San Diego? :-)
