“Cover Over the Bad”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

This was my first time in a Comfort Inn in a long time. My last experience was pretty bad, so my expectations were not high this time. On entry into the property, I noticed that the exterior looked nice but the parking was cramped, especially for folks driving in large vehicles. But I can overlook that given where we were. The lobby is nice and seems to have been recently remodeled. The check-in process was smooth and the staff fairly helpful. When we got to the room the first thing I noticed (besides the dozen pizza flyers shoved under the door was that the rooms seemed to have been remodeled too. The decor was newer and the bathroom seemed to have received some updates too. We got a room with two queens and a sofabed. The queen beds seemed comfortable enough except that they only give you four small (what I would consider) throw pillows instead of regular sized pillows. I also noticed that the sofabed had a rather dirty couch cover on it. When I pulled up the cover to see the condition of the sofabed I saw the VERY old fake leather couch underneath. The couch was so old and worn that the cushion and armrests were flaking fake leather. I picked up the cushion to see the condition of the mattress and found mildew on the underside of the cushion. The bed was about what you would find on most cheap sofabeds. The mattress was thin and uncomfortable. Needless to say, my kid did NOT want to sleep on that thing. I found out the next day that another family we were travelling with found that the sofabed sheets were dirty. When they called to complain, someone brought up new sheets and told them that they (the guests) had to make the bed.

Regarding the included breakfast, all I can say is that there were plenty of options, but they need to consider a larger room. They tell their guests to come at 6:30 if they want to avoid the lines rather than trying to find a way to accomodate their travelling guests who more than likely do NOT want to be up that early on their vacations.

I gave this hotel an average rating because I already had low expectations but was pleased to see that they have at least tried to make updates to their property. The old flaking couch is just unacceptable. The proximity to downtown, old town, the Gaslamp, Qualcomm and other places is ideal. The bottom line is that I will never return to that Comfort Inn. I may stay on Hotel Circle again but not at that hotel.

I normally don't think of this chain when looking for hotels, but I was pleasantly surprised. They have kid suites - an extra room for the kids, with TV and a bunk bed. It's a great option to give everyone a little breathing space. The grownup area wasn't that roomy, but overall we were very comfortable. The staff was friendly, too.

The breakfast was also good, with scrambled eggs, waffles, danishes, yogurt, cereal, juice, coffee, etc. Our stay was brief but this is a good place to hole up for the night on a busy trip.

You can't beat the price and location of this hotel. We booked on Expedia. Our family loved the bunk-beds. I was a bit leery after reading some reviews about cleanliness, but our room was excellent. The breakfast was good, a little crowded, but it gave us a chance to mingle with some other travelers.

The only drawback was paying for parking(which I knew going in), but we were able to get a stall right near the elevator so it was worth it. Also the digital channels on the TV didn't work, but it didn't matter as the TV's are always on Disney or Nickelodeon.

Room Tip: If you have kids, get a room with the bunk beds!

We found this to be a great place for our larger family. Our room had two doubles in one room and another room with a sleeper sofa and second tv separated by a sliding door. The AAA price for this mid-week was reasonable. There was a parking charge, but it was clearly listed on the website so not a surprise. The breakfast room was oddly located on the fourth floor and busy at times, but the employees we encountered were helpful and on top of things. Everything in our room and the common areas seemed to be new so may have been recently redone. With a car it was a good location for visiting the zoo and Balboa park. We did not try the pool, although others were even with air temps in the 60s. We found this convenient and the staff courteous.

Hello landonroussel, thank you very much for your recent review of our property! We are pleased to know that our staff gave you great service and went above and beyond to help you with your need. We do apologize about how crowded the breakfast room was during your stay. Our hot breakfast the features eggs, sausages, and waffles sure is a hit with all of our guests and we are looking into solutions to make the experience more enjoyable for our guests. Again, thank you for review and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Our son-in-law picked this motel or actually it was recommended through the a travel agency. Grandkids enjoyed the outdoor outdoor heated pool. The motel is going through some changes. Phones in the room didn't work for several days. Breakfast center was relocated for several days and was VERY crowded. Breakfast was the traditional motel food - breads, cereal hot & cold, waffles, eggs and sausage, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, juice/coffee, fresh fruit. Motel has problems ordering enough breakfast food and if you are at the later end of the breakfast time your choices are limited. The motel is very busy. Staff was accommodating. You have to pay for parking unless you park on the street. We understand that this motel is not in the best part of town but we had no problems. Rooms were adequate and clean - we had a queen with bunk bed. The grandkids took turns spending the night with us.

This hotel would be okay if they had employees that worked a little harder on cleanliness and service. I don't ask for too much in a hotel but a clean room is a must! We arrived on sat AM and were happy with the front desk. When we arrived in our room there was a wet towel and washcloth on our "clean" bed and dirty wet towels on the bathroom floor. We asked to be switched to a better room which was done without a problem. When we walked into our new room it was very musty smelling and the sofa couch was a imitation leather that was peeling, cracked and pieces were torn off. You can tell they have taken the time and money and tried to upgrade the room which looked good except for the couch. The cable was not working -which they came and fixed right away. Bring your own shampoo because after being in the pool (which was nice and warm) their shampoo bottle was so tiny and did not clean our hair at all! On the bed there was a nice sheet set and a blanket and the top comforter. Of course we all know to take off the top comforter but was not too sure about the blanket. It was a little smelly and old looking. The next AM I looked into the housekeeper cart and noticed that none of the blankets were being washed! EEEWWWW!!! How many people have slept with what I just slept with the night before! Breakfast was okay. There was a male worker there that apparently did not want to be at his job because he was pushing past people and totally ignored a gentlemen trying to ask him a question. It was very rude and obvious! I personally will not stay here again.

My sister and I stayed here for three nights for a mini vacation to check out the city. Overall, we were happy with the hotel and would stay there again.

The good:

Staff: they were all so friendly and accommodating. We had problems with noisy neighbours, and the front desk sent somebody up to handle it as soon as we called. When the computers in the business room weren't working, a staff member let us use one of the front desk computers.

Shuttle: the hotel has a free shuttle that will take guests to attractions or transportation hubs. The drivers are flexible, pleasant, and prompt. They'd take us somewhere and arrange a time to pick us up.

Room: it was comfortable and clean, the tv worked fine, lots of hot water. The couch was a bit ratty and the cover was flaking off a bit, but as I typically don't require a couch in a hotel room, this didn't bother me.

Internet: plenty fast and reliable.

The bad:

Breakfast: the breakfast room itself was pretty awful. Tables crammed close together, and they weren't cleaned off quickly enough once people left. The first day there were no eggs, just greasy sausage rounds, and while there was plenty of bread, there was no butter, peanut butter, or jam. Nothing at all to put on the bread. The second day there was no hot food at all. On that day there weren't any tables either, so we had to take our plates back to our rooms.

Noise: you can hear quite easily through the walls and traffic in the hallways.

This certainly wasn't a luxury hotel, but we weren't expecting that. It was as nice as any Comfort Inn I've stayed, and much better than some.
