“Like Hawaii- beautiful”
Reviewed December 22, 2009

I stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip. Got a really good rate- last minute. The lobby looks like Hawaii- waterfall and beautiful plants. There are tropical birds and lovely fish ponds on the property. I think they said it was the former Scripps estate. Really loved it. I tried the bar and the restaurant and both were very good. The restaurant may be a little pricey for some.

Great service, great hotel.

I accompanied my mother to a conference in San Diego that was being held at The Catamaran, so we decided to stay there. We had terrible problems checking in to the hotel, although my mother made her reservation months in advance. In general I found the staff to be sweet but somewhat incompetent. The room's in shabby condition- it's acceptable, and it's clean, but definitely needs a major update.

Otherwise the hotel is lovely. The grounds are beautiful, all the guests looked really happy and relaxed, they have an AMAZING gym (views of the water and a wonderful breeze from the beach- one of the better workouts I've had), and they have a great brunch place, from what I hear (at 40$/person, I couldn't afford it, but it's supposed to be great). The hotel is in a great location- you can walk to the beach and to several excellent restaurants.

All in all, we had a great stay, but this hotel could definitely use a little updating.

Read reviews from this site and was nervous as I already booked. Understand reviews of others, but my family is extremely picky and we absolutely loved it!! The location is perfect! No car needed, pacific ocean right across street, and property sits on mission bay beach. (teen daughters) Arcade room with about 20 FUN games was free,yes games were free for my 12yr old boy and we would have easily spent hundreds! Pool chill due to time of yr but hottub lrge and perfect, and beautiful fully equipt park on bay beach about a 5 min beach walk for my 6 yr old. Tower room a bit sml, but VERY nice (Yes bedspreads old & Stained so threw it in the closet) Sheets & blankets fine. Decor similar to the disney polynesian, throughout, very lush and exotic, cleaned frequently, but you will see droppings of ducks here & there always felt like I was going through an arboretum,with exotic plants & birds. If this isn't your style, you wont like it. rented a sailboat, bay had wind but very smooth. Sevice slow, but freindly,food great, Expensive.
but reasonable kids menu. housekeeping very accomodating to needs,switch off late vs early cleaning with other floors, Felt safe & relaxed and didn't hear a single complaint from any other guest. Free boat ride @ nite can be used for entertainment(older ) or siteseeing.(none during winter months) Very cool!concierge not too helpful, so do some research there's tons to do! Or easy to just relax @ the resort & surrounding area!

Every trip I have made in the last, what?, 15 years, has been at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego. With bay beaches right at the hotel, Sea World, 10 minutes away, most of San Diego within easy driving range, the Catamaran is a top choice. With its exotic birds, that talk to you, its Koi and duck ponds, the beautiful and relaxing gardens, you'd never guess that it also caters, not only to regular guests, but also to the busines traveler. It is a very relaxing place. Not too modern tech looking, but has all the modern day technologies. The hotel employees are pleasant to talk to and their followup service, after your stay, is 5 star.

If you are an old Aztec re-living some great memories this is the place to stay.. Still have the beach about a football field away or the now appreciated kick back style that the bay offers. The staff helps promote a great atmosphere of {Pacific, Mission} attitude with a smile. {Genuine}

A great location with the bay on one side and across the street, the beach. Tons of stuff to do by just hanging around. My kids loved walking the bay and beach, swimming the pool, renting bikes and boogie boards. We never went to Sea World and saved $250 because of all the good things to do there.

Downside is rooms have double beds, not queens, a little tight. Views in upper floors (5th and up) are maginificent.

Three of us stayed here on business. Our conference wasn't here, but luckily our boss didn't have us stay where it was held- I guess the rooms at the Town and Country were AWFUL according to folks at the conference. I'm not sure how, but our rooms were incredibly reasonable ($119 night for our penthouse suite with view of Pacific Beach!). They were comfortable and cleaned very thoroughly daily. Our refrigerator had an odor and needed to be investigated (it wasn't messy- maybe the drip pan?), but overall it was great. My coworker and I got up early every morning and walked the beach and watched the surfers on some beautiful breaks (my boss is lucky no one offered to loan me a longboard- I'd have been awol for the conference!) before heading out. Evenings we were close to several nice restaurants nearby, many within walking distance. I would definitely stay here for personal travel, assuming I could get the same rates.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the few resorts on Mission Bay to not charge a resort fee! The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round. Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests. The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti. At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants of 2015 and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy daily happy hour specials. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms. Guests may also choose to grab a bite poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet. Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Step back in time and enjoy a colorful sunset from the top deck, or kick up your heels as the vessel becomes a vibrant nightlife destination with live entertainment and a full-service bar. The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more. Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is also within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport. ... more   less
