“Perfect spot for teenagers and grown ups alike.”
Reviewed October 30, 2009

We were travelling through California and only had three days in San Diego and the travel agent had included the Catamaran Resort in our itinerary so it was not exactly our choice but we were very pleased they did, it was idyllic! The teenage boys enjoyed Mission Bay, the easy bus and tram ride into San Diego to the shops and cinema and they explored a bit further afield and found a guitar shop, just what they were looking for. The Hookah bar was a revelation too. All the cafes and bars along the beach were busy and friendly. I loved getting up early in the morning and stolling along the boadwalk around Mission Bay. The hotel itself was excellent, it is unlikely we will visit San Diego again as we live in the UK but if we do we will definately head for the Catamaran Resort.

I stayed at this hotel because of a business trip. It was clean, the service was good, and the rooms were nice, but the extras (even room service) were VERY expensive. It also cost $13 a day to self-park. That's mostly why I gave it the average rating. If you can afford a 50 minute massage for $110, (I can't), then this is your place. The resort also advertises that some rooms walk right out to the beach. Well, it's not the Pacific Ocean, that's across the street. There is a little beach with a lagoon that some rooms have the access. Again, it served my purpose for the business conference, but if I were bringing my family, I might look for something else.

We were very pleased with the accommodation and location of the Catamaran. Staff was friendly and the room was roomy and comfortable. We were amazed at how quiet it was, we never heard or saw a neighbour on our floor. Would love to return to Mission Bay and definitely stay there again.

This was the first time I've stayed at the Catamaran, but it definitely won't be my last. On Mission Bay, one short block from the Pacific Ocean, where else coud be better? Add to the people watching, walking around the Bay or on the Ocean Boardwalk, coffee at the Mission II, the beach, fun restaurants and you have the perfect vacation spot. Sunrise and then yoga on the Bay beach in the morning, the pool and the exercise room, and finally evening cocktails by the fire pit,all combine to make the Catamaran a wonderful place to relax.

This is our 17th annual beach biathlon & chili cook-off and our 5th year at the Catamaran hotel. This hotel is perfectly located on the bay side of Mission Beach with spectacular views of Sail Bay. The wait staff is always accomodating to our large group (50+ participants). The bay-front rooms are right on the sand and perfect for a family or romantic weekend.

After reading previous reviews I was hesitant about staying at this hotel. I received the room I had requested and during check in was given the free cruise tickets for the Bahia Belle. My room was cleaned every day to my satisfaction. The grounds are just beautiful. Eating meals at the Atoll was as great as I had remembered from our previous trip. Staff was wonderful! Yes, I may agree that the rooms cld use some updating. Our room looked like it had some work done. Looking forward to my next trip to the Catamaran.

The hotel was a lot nicer than expected. It's your ordinary room nothing super special but clean and roomy. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. The hotel couldn't have been better located. Just a block away from the beach and just a hop away from the bay! Perfectly located to go out to all of the bars just a couple blocks away. Highly recommended!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the few resorts on Mission Bay to not charge a resort fee! The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round. Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests. The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti. At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants of 2015 and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy daily happy hour specials. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms. Guests may also choose to grab a bite poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet. Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Step back in time and enjoy a colorful sunset from the top deck, or kick up your heels as the vessel becomes a vibrant nightlife destination with live entertainment and a full-service bar. The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more. Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is also within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport. ... more   less
