“2nd visit, somewhat different review”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2014

My wife and I visited the Catamaran last February, when it was empty, and got tremendous service from the small Staff. We decided to spend 8 days there in July (20th to 27th) when we knew it would be crowded.

This time, there were some problems. First of all, our "guaranteed" 4pm check in was delayed because the room wasn't ready. So what did the front desk do? Bought us lunch and a few drinks while the room was completed.

Secondly, when we did get up to our room, the bathroom was filty. Tub/Shower and floor were grimy and dirt-covered. What did they do? Came right up, and scrubbed it until it was spotless.

Lastly, a family that was occupying the room above us thought it was fun and cute to spit off of the balcony, throw shoes and food containers, and toss assorted food off of the 12th floor.
What did the Staff do about it? - Security went up, I assume, because the flinging stopped.

So, what am I saying? ---- stuff happens when you're in a jammed family resort. It's the way the Staff handled these problems that gets my praise. No excuses, just action, to make our stay wonderful.

We'll go back.

Room Tip: Request a tower room above the 5th Floor, for amazing views of the Bay and Ocean.

I booked a room at the Catamaran Resort for my daughter's 16th birthday trip to San Diego. The property, staff, location, etc. met my high expectations. The view from our room in the tower was absolutely breathtaking! I will definitely stay here again!

The Catamaran Luau is a rare treat for locals and visitors alike. It is the highlight of the summer and we look forward to attending each year. The staff, including Melissa, Hollis, Kim and Hopper go out of their way to make their guests feel welcome. The food is spectacular and the show is wonderfully authentic. It transports you to the islands and is fun for kids of all ages from toddlers to grandparents. Don't miss this extraordinary event!

I recently attended a Luau at the Catamaran and what a TREAT!! From beginning to end, the experience was wonderful. From the staff being extremely helpful and welcoming to the delicious food...and not to forget the entertainment, the event was well thought out and executed to perfection. Both Melissa and Charlotte are amazing; I almost forgot I was in San Diego!

We had a fantastic time at the catamaran in San Diego Luau. We bought our four year old kids and they had so much fun trying all the different foods and watching the hula dancers all night. Their favorite part was watching the dancers dance with fire.
It's right on the beach and they played live hawaiian music the entire time.
The food was amazing, some of the best food i've had in a long time and they kept the mai tai's comin all night long.

What a wonderful evening. I happen to be working with the resort staff setting up a company function and I was invited to the luau by Charlotte. My husband and I are fairly new to the city (we've been here less than 3 years) and we love experiencing all that San Diego has to offer...luau is on our list of 'must do'...so I was thrilled for the opportunity. The atmosphere was beautiful, plenty of good food and the entertainment was the best part of the night...awesome! It was a great date night!

We have selected the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa for our annual user conference next year. After visiting numerous hotels in the region, the decision to move the conference from a downtown location to the bay was an easy one. The staff, including Melissa, Charlotte, and Mike, are amazing -- friendly, accommodating and genuinely interested in meeting and exceeding your conference objectives. The hotel rooms are newly renovated, the large event space offers multiple set-up options, and the on-site A/V team has proved they can deliver on our needs. Very excited to have the Catamaran host our big event next year.

Room Tip: Definitely request a bay-front room, or one in the tower.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the few resorts on Mission Bay to not charge a resort fee! The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round. Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests. The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti. At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants of 2015 and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy daily happy hour specials. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms. Guests may also choose to grab a bite poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet. Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Step back in time and enjoy a colorful sunset from the top deck, or kick up your heels as the vessel becomes a vibrant nightlife destination with live entertainment and a full-service bar. The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more. Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is also within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport. ... more   less
