“Our Favorite San Diego Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2014

We used to live in San Diego, and return to visit family every couple of years. Although we had offers from friends and family to stay with them, we politely declined and said we wanted to stay at the Catamaran! We've stayed here before and absolutely love this hotel!! Pacific Beach/ Mission Beach is my favorite San Diego neighborhood. True Southern California charming beach community. We were lucky enough to get a room on the 14th floor with a magnificent view of Mission Bay, Mission Beach, and the downtown skyline. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and the parrot show is interesting and fun. Service by all staff is excellent.

Room Tip: If you like views, get a room up in the tower. Spectacular. The balconies are a generous size.

Catamaran has the authentic resort feel, upper floors of the tower will have either a view of the ocean or the bay. There are enough activities on site to keep the entire family occupied. The location is great with grocery, laundry and restaurants being found in the immediate area. The bar is great however I cannot recommend the restaurants dinner service as I found it to be lacking, but other people seem to enjoy it.

We normally stay at the Dana when we visit San Diego - but this time we decided to try somewhere different. Walking distance to more restaurants and beaches. We stayed there April 2014 with 2 kids, 6 1/2 and 4. They upgraded our room to beach front which was perfect since the kids spent most of their time there. THe room was nice, clean, comfortable, modern, spacious. Amazing view. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Lots of colorful koi fish, many varieties of ducks and birds for the kids to see. Landscaping in the resort makes you feel you're in the islands. Pool was large - and hot tub was large also, which was nice since it was a little cool for pool swimming we spent more time in the hot tub. One down side, wish they restocked pool towels more frequently and that the pool bar stayed open past 5. We did bring carry out from area restaurants to the pool though. We rented bikes, pedal boats, paddle boards - all very inexpensive. Free coffee every morning from the beach surf shack. We also did the harbor cruise, which was nice. We will definitely stay at the catamaran again on our next trip.

We so enjoyed the wood ducks and exotic birds,up close and personal. The beach and water views on Mission Bay were stunning. Nice pools, balconies, comfy beds. Room and bath are on the small side, tastefully decorated and very clean, which is most important to us. We definitely wish to stay here again.

This spa is fabulous for a group spa day. Gather your girlfriends together and plan to be pampered and have fun. Jamie helped to coordinate our treatments with several great suggestions, and there were plenty of places to hang out in between appointments. Everyone can have the kind of day that they want--relax in the Serenity Room, hang out and watch what is happening on the beach from the whirlpool, work out, go to the steam room, sauna or just lounge. Friends from college look forward to it every year--it's our favorite tradition!

We recently stayed at The Catamaran for my friend's Bachelorette party and utilized the spa for most of the day on Saturday. Breeann and Jamie were excellent in helping book and organize all the appointments. We couldn't have done it without their help! While there, I received a massage from Todd, while my girlfriends received wraps or scrubs from: Tara-Emily, Johnna, and Karleen. All services were excellent and the spa was beautiful and so serene and relaxing! We loved the area that you waited in prior to the treatments, as well as the private hot tub, sauna and steam room. Thank you for a great experience! I'm sure we will all be back!

Room Tip: Make sure to go out on The Bahia Belle at night too! DJ, dancing, and drinks! Lots of fun!

My family and I just returned from a great stay Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa. The location was great and the staff was excellent! The staff (particularly Justin T., Kristin O. and Michael, the General Manager.) went above and beyond on more than one occasion to make sure that we had a positive experience at the hotel. I highly recommend the property.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the few resorts on Mission Bay to not charge a resort fee! The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round. Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests. The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti. At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants of 2015 and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy daily happy hour specials. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms. Guests may also choose to grab a bite poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet. Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Step back in time and enjoy a colorful sunset from the top deck, or kick up your heels as the vessel becomes a vibrant nightlife destination with live entertainment and a full-service bar. The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more. Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is also within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport. ... more   less
