“Friendly attentive staff make this place shine”
Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

Checked into the Catamaran for a quick get away when we had some great January weather. The rooms are out dated like many of the reviews here mention. However, the staff here go out of their way to make your stay! We were promptly greeted at the front drive, the valet was so friendly I actually used the parking service, I never do that! Jocelyn at the desk was super friendly and took extra time to find us the perfect room, love the personal attention! We did happy hour at the bar which was a great deal, again bar service was excellent.
Now let's talk about location. Cannot be beat! Bay right outside your door and the ocean across the street, plenty to do in the area as well.
If you want an upscale room stay somewhere else, but if you want friendly staff that are going to show you a great time and a location that can't be beat, stay at the Catamaran.

My wife and I were in Mission Beach on a rare rainy day. We opted for workouts and treatments at the Catamaran Spa. Hotel looked a bit worn and dated and the spa was a bit small if you are used to luxury spas. Tat said, both of our masseuses were phenomenal. I would recommend the treatment services here. The experience itself, though, was a bit lacking. No male attendant to check me in ( he was at lunch). Attendants also have to pass through the relaxation area to service their respective Locke rooms. In doing so, they were a bit noisy. All in all, though, we would definitely return for the treatments.

It felt like the rooms were warn out. Beds not particularily comfortable and everything felt dated. Fitness center had excellent equipment but hours were not great. The fitness center didn't open until 6Anow and closed early so hard to get a workout in during my stay.

The Catamaran Resort has a fabulous bayside position and should be a superb five star hotel and resort. It is clearly years overdue for refurbishment and renewal of complacent and tired management. Our room was very tired and run down. The restaurant was extremely poor and the staff in it were gloomy and unhelpful. The cleaning staff were inefficient and not prepared to accept that mistakes had been made. Part of the hotel roof looked as if it had been blown off in a storm quite some time before we stayed there and clearly no attempt had been made to repair it. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone until it has undergone major improvement and the installation of new management. A big dissapointment.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

Hotel was nice. Some reviews say a little dated...and it was, but fantastic location. Staff were very sweet. Concierge was very helpful. Grounds are beautiful. Brekky in the restaurant was amazing every morning. They serve stuff I wouldn't normally have such as eggs and polenta. It was fantastic. French toast was stuffed with ricotta and orange essence. It was orgasmic! The waiter Hector was so nice. I am sorry, but forget the waitress we had for the last two days, but she was equally sweet! For what we paid, and the location, this place is worth every cent.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor in the 3 storey. Try to get the top floor as the sound proofing isn'...

I am giving the Catamaran 5 stars because of the EXCELLENT Service! Each and every staff person had a smile, accommodated our every need, i.e. early check in, late check out....The room was spacious, the sheets soft, the bed comfortable with ample pillows, flat screen TV, very clean. My only complaint about the room was that the towels could have been softer and fluffier. The head board for the bed was carved wood. Wood carved cabinet for the flat screen TV. A nice balcony with ample seating for sitting and watching the Bay...And they have everything you need - great room service, full dinning, bar... pool, spa, spa services, bike rentals...Concierge gave us great advice on getting around San Diego, how to purchase a bus pass which you can pick up right in front of the Hotel and get anywhere easily. I highly recommend this Resort to anyone and will be back for fun and relaxation.

Room Tip: If you want total silence ask to be away from the outdoor dining and bar area. Ask for a room with...

From the moment we checked in we felt like we were in paradise. The lobby has a beautiful man made waterfall with the sounds of the tropical water that can relaxe your body and mind. As you stroll through the outside you'll see gorgegous tropical gardens and you'll encounter tropical birds. Very clean and manicured landscaping. Our room was on the north tower over looking the city and ocean view. Breath taking!! Room was very clean & comfortable. They also have a beauitful outside lounge area over looking the bay with firepits burning while you get cozy. Flat screens to watch some sports. Drinks and food was good. We enjoyed their Sunday brunch. What we liked the most was the fact we were near everything. Walking distance to the beach, resturants, shopping and night life. We took sailing lessons which was so much fun!!! Overall experience was EXCELLENT!! This is perfect for a romantic getaway as well as family friendly environment.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the few resorts on Mission Bay to not charge a resort fee! The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round. Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests. The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti. At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants of 2015 and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy daily happy hour specials. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms. Guests may also choose to grab a bite poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet. Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Step back in time and enjoy a colorful sunset from the top deck, or kick up your heels as the vessel becomes a vibrant nightlife destination with live entertainment and a full-service bar. The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more. Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is also within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport. ... more   less
