“Just ok!”
Reviewed January 26, 2012

The view of the pacific was the best part! The higher the better! The staff was ok ! It seemed like they were just going through the motions? If your coming to Cali stay in Carlsbad ! The town has a better vibe ! I recommend the Carlsbad Inn ! Same beach environment only much cleaner surroundings!!

Room Tip: Above the tenth floor !! Facing south !! You can see down town sandiego and the pacific!

I guess I was expecting more based on their website pictures. In person its a lot different. Lobby has a nice tropical look with waterfall, but our room on the outskirts 200s was more like a motel. Room was very dark even with white walls. Our "garden view" consisted of some kind of palm tree and fencing. I gave it 2 stars because we did get a goodnite's sleep since there were no other guest around. I don't think I would pay more for bayview. For what I paid and what you get, I should have been given a bay view.

What a wonderful place to stay. We loved the Catamaran and would go back again. Our hotel was right by where they have the bird purches and loved seeing them everyday. The grounds are just beautiful and they Koy ponds are fun to see. Our room was just great, it was a bay view room and was just perfect. Since we went in January, it was a little chilly so we really enjoyed spending time around the fire pit. I wish we were still there now. If you have a chance to go and stay there, do it!

Room Tip: We had a bay view and loved it.

Have travelled throughout the world for work and know a four star hotel when I stay at one. Expedia is dead wrong here. Maybe a 2 to 3 star property -- and a 2 if you are in room 100 where (a) near impossible to find a light socket, (b) half the room lights don't work, (c) the banging of the nearby lobby-access door wakes you, and (d) there is a frosted glass window that is the washroom and the other side of which is the hall outside.

Had it not been almost 11pm in the evening of a one-night stay, I would have left. I paid almost $200 for the night and the best western across the road could have been had for almost half that amount and been on the ocean side of the street.

As soon as you step out of your room or go on your balcony, you feel like you're at a resort. The rooms are dated and bland, but the views, location and grounds make the money spent worth it!

I'm watching the sunrise from my 12th floor balcony as I write this. To my left are mountains, ahead is the sun rising over the bay with the city skyline ahead in the distance, and to my right are waves breaking on Pacific Beach. Below me are the immaculately manicured grounds and Catamaran's dock where sailboats power boats and kayaks can be rented.

If you stay here, splurge on a room with a view of the bay. Some views are of the parking garage. That would have provided such a different experience. With my 12th-floor, bay view suite, I awaken to a sunrise over the bay and can enjoy the evening sunsets from the same location, though I chose to walk two short blocks to the ocean instead.

I am a lady staying here alone and I feel entirely safe here. The staff have all been friendly and helpful, though not at all intrusive.

I hope to stay here again soon!

Oh, one small issue was that there was no hot water the first night, but it has been fine since. This is my third, and sadly, my last morning here.

We returned here again, this time for a pre-Christmas stay and it is still our favorite place. The location is brilliant, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we found the service, cleanliness and overall appearance of the resort to be even better than on our last visit.
This is a unique property in many respects. I would characterize it as a three-star hotel with five-star facilities. It's not for everyone but it works perfectly for us. It's a great place to relax!
The only word of caution is that on busy occasions, like for example weekends, when there's a ball game or other big event, it will be loud and noisy. That's a fact! However, the rest of the time more than makes up for that. We will stay here again, for sure. The unique location, the beautiful gardens, the pool, bar, restaurant, spa and everything else makes this place simply unbeatable.

I have no idea how anyone is reviewing this property positively. The hotel is not even close to being four stars unless you consider dirty gross floors and popcorn ceilings to be positive attributes. The property is extremely overrated and over priced.
The service is horrible regardless of what the issues are.....it's your fault. The internet is inconsistent and not reliable. The hot water is inconsistent and not reliable. The bill should be double checked as there are mistakes there. The keys don't work....nothing like getting back to your room after a long day and repeatedly having to make multiple trips to the front desk.
I have no idea how this place is still in business. Upon checking in there was a very frustrated couple checking out and that should have been my sign to not check in at all.

Room Tip: Get a different resort or hotel

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the few resorts on Mission Bay to not charge a resort fee! The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round. Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests. The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti. At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants of 2015 and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy daily happy hour specials. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms. Guests may also choose to grab a bite poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet. Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Step back in time and enjoy a colorful sunset from the top deck, or kick up your heels as the vessel becomes a vibrant nightlife destination with live entertainment and a full-service bar. The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more. Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is also within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport. ... more   less
