“Once but never again”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We visited this hotel this summer 2012. The best thing about this large hotel is it's location; most of the rooms have no view what so ever. The pool is very very small. You don't have any privacy when you want to sit outside your room (no balcony). Our stay became particularly a bad experience because of the rudeness and arrogance of the hotel staff, more precisely the personnel in the restaurant and the hotel manager himself. We stayed for two nights with four persons (two kids). We had an arrangement including a free breakfast. When we checked in we got four coupons for the restaurant. We thought that this was for the breakfast on the first day, and that we would receive four more coupons for the next day. This was not the case. We had to pay which led to a discussion in the restaurant and later on with the hotel manager because we paid for three persons (our youngest boy stayed for free). Their story: free breakfast for two persons because you booked a two persons room. We felt misled of course but were most upset by the way we were spoken to by the staff. Very rude, arrogant and unprofessional. So bad that we didn't even had any breakfast at all. This was once but never again.

This hotel was clean and friendly. The pool is small and jacuzzi basic, but very well landscaped. It captures old town perfectly. The pool and jacuzzi have an electric chair that lowers people into the water. If you have a hard time with stairs or a disability, this will let you enjoy time in the pool without stressing about getting in or out.
This hotel is definatly is comfortable with a beautiful Santa Fe Style but no Frills.
Whatever you do....DO NOT BUY THE BREAKFAST!!! ITS GROSS AND A RIP OFF. Its too bad this breakfast is cheap and barely eattable because the hotel is really nice. Just a walk a few minutes, old town has the best food around and lots of breakfast at great prices!

Room Tip: Ask for a view. If you hate stairs let them know to put you in a lower building.

The Hotel is located perfectly in the center of Old Town San Diego. You don't need to move the car to access all the amenities in that area. For the right rate, great location for a two night stay. Request to stay in building 2, 3 and 4. To reach the rest of the rooms, invite "Indian Jones" to join you in the trip. You will need him. The parking can be a headache. The rooms were nicely decorated.

Room Tip: Stay in buildings 2, 3 and 4.

We stayed 2 nights at the end of August into September. The hotel was right in Old Town, we walked to sightseeing. The room (top floor of building 8) had very high ceilings with a ceiling fan but the room was dark. We had 2 queen beds but we needed a seating area, the room was big enough for it. I spilled a bottle of water and threw a hand towel on the carpet to absorb the excess water. The towel came up very dirty. I appreciated the glass glasses and stoneware mugs, much better than the plastic in most places. We were able to see the fireworks from Sea World from the outdoor corridor. We were so busy that I didn't even get to check out the pool area.

It is interesting to note that another reviewer mentioned the complimentary breakfast. Our rate did not include any breakfast. We didn't check out the restaurant at all.

It seems to be a Best Western policy to ask guests to keep the bath towels rather than replacing them every day. That's ok with me, but it would be nice if there were towel bars in the bathroom to hang the towels to dry.

Stayed here in the Spring of 2012. The location is great for walking around the Old Town area, and conveniently located to drive most places in San Diego. I think this place has a bit of arrogance in the way their run their business, though. When we arrived to move into our room with "bay views", we got shoveled in a dirty, smelly room in the far upper corners of a building facing a park. I called the office and asked why we were paying for a "bay view" and got this room. We had to haul our luggage back down to the parkade and drive all the way back to the office to talk to them. They seemed quite upset that we were questioning the room we got; they tried again with a room directly across from the stairwell facing a wall, but we refused that room as well. Their third try was "this is the last room we have", which we took. It did face the bay, but was a corner room with the stairwell right in front of the door, which made it a little noisy when people's children were running up and down the stairs and breezeways. It was quite a big larger than the first room they tried to put us in, though. When I asked why we didn't get the room we had booked months in advance, the response was "we're full". Huh? Stay was OK because we didn't have to engage with the staff again until we checked out. Lots of steps and climbs up and down the road if you're in the upper buildings. Restaurant staff on the arrogant side as well. Must be catchy at this hotel! Parking is horrible - don't bring anything bigger than a Ford Fiesta! Wouldn't stay here again. Sadly, they have a great location, but really indifferent, slightly arrogant, almost rude staff. I'd head for Coronado next time!

Hotel was standard. Parking very inconvenient. Stayed in top level to get view of bay; parking at top very limited and tight spots. As guests, you're paying $12 day for parking, would have liked better parking availability for guests. Rooms were standard. However, room was not cleaned as we returned after 3:30 in the afternoon to get ready for dinner. Called housekeeping to clean room which they promptely did. We left room so they could clean and decided to go to dinner to avoid the crowds. For our visit, the only thing we liked was having the hotel within walking distance to the shops, restaurants, and trolley tours. Next time, will plan to stay somewhere else.

Great location and beautiful exterior but the rooms need updating. We stayed in building 6 which is quite a hike with your suitcase from the main lobby. We were originally given a room facing the back/road which was dark and uninviting. One call to reception and they kindly moved us to a top floor in building 6. It was also worn out and outdated but brighter with a nice view. We had to get maintenance to fix our old TV. The grounds are beautiful with fountains and areas for sitting. The pool area was clean but could use more plants and flowers.

We had been to Old Town years prior to our recent visit and after seeing this pretty hotel on the hill, I was looking forward to the stay. A bit of a disappointment for the price paid. Our pkg did not include food but we ended up eating at the restaurant onsite for one meal. Only one waitress working the patio so the service was VERY slow. We tried The Alamo down the street... great for breakfast.
