“Could not fault our 8 night stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

The final leg of our journey, started in San Diego for 6 nights and then covered just over 2000 miles up to Utah and into Colorado, back into Arizona and finishing back in California. So good to be settled in for a full 8 nights and able to unpack our cases!!!

Having stayed in San Diego on 5 previous occasions we know the lay of the land fairly well and almost feel like locals. We have previously stayed up in the Little Italy area and have walked past this hotel on many occasions.

Due to the length of our stay we were upgraded to a room on the 11th floor with a balcony overlooking the bay toward the 'Star of India' ship. The room was ideal, spacious, very clean and an extremely comfortable bed with a very good bathroom. Wi-fi worked well and was complimentary. Due to the comfort of the bed we never made it for the complimentary breakfast!!!

Parking was in a multi-storey attached to the hotel although spaces are tight especially when driving a larger vehicle and at only $14 per night very reasonable compared to a lot of other city hotels.

Location is brilliant - well placed for Little Italy and all the wonderful restaurants, just a few minutes walk round the corner and up the hill. Only about 15 minutes to the Gas Lamp district and all the area has to offer. An easy walk to the front and Seaport Village.

When we go back to San Diego (we will at some point) then I will be checking out availability at this hotel - we will definitely stay again.

The location of the hotel could not have been better for our purposes. We needed to be convenient to Balboa Park and indeed we were. in addition, we were given excellent directions to the park by the front desk. My only wish would be for more restaurants within walking distance but I certainly realize that this is not in Best Western's control (at least they had a restaurant connected to the hotel itself, which was their answer to this limitation).

We stayed here for 4 nights while attending a real estate retreat last month (January). The room was clean and well presented. We stayed on an upper floor overlooking the bay with a small balcony. We were walking distance from Little Italy with great restaurants. We were about a 15 minute walk from the Gaslamp district. Breakfast was included and it was decent. The only thing I didn't like was the $14 a day parking fee. We actually paid to keep our car parked the whole time since we walked everywhere. The staff at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Get upper floor facing the bay for great views.

We planned to visit San Diego for seven days prior to taking a cruise to Mexico. As part of the planning process I wanted to avoid the hassle and expense of renting a car. After reading many reviews on downtown hotels, we finally booked this one and it turned out to be a perfect choice if you don't mind short walks and taking public transportation.

From the hotel, Little Italy begins across the street. Or walk about 4 blocks to the embarcadero for the Maritime Museum, USS Midway, and other attractions. The Santa Fe Depot where all four trolley lines come together within a block of each other is about a 5 block walk . You can go many places on the trolley including Old Town and the Mexican border. Walking about 8 blocks will get you to the number 7 bus which takes you to Balboa Park (where many museums are located) and the San Diego Zoo.

Hotel Shuttle arrived at the airport about 15 minutes after we called. Be careful to note where the courtesy shuttle pickup area is located. From Jet Blue baggage claim we had to go further down along the terminal, then across the street, and then around a corner (all of which was not very visible from the baggage claim area).

Check-in was smooth and quick. We were happy with our 7th Floor city view room. We never heard any trains, and street noise was limited to a fire truck once or twice. Beds were very comfortable, the room HVAC worked well, and the refrigerator was large and worked very well. The room had a safe (which many hotels do not have), a microwave and a flat screen TV. Internet was free and worked well. Hotel staff were generally helpful and pleasant throughout our stay. The hotel laundry service was quite expensive, so we took the number 11 bus about a mile to a Laundromat.

Complimentary breakfast was located next to the hotel in a restaurant. The restaurant atmosphere was a bit more pleasant than the breakfast rooms in some other hotels. The food was adequate, but somewhat boring on a 7 day stay as the menu changes very little. But no complaints from us. We ate there every day. For those who want more variety, there are many other options nearby.

Shuttle service to our cruise ship had to be reserved in advance (starting the Thursday before). No problem getting a reservation and the shuttle was prompt, the driver was friendly.

So why didn't we rate the hotel as excellent? An awful shower. Constantly cycling back and forth between uncomfortably hot to uncomfortably cold no matter what temperature and volume adjustments we tried. The hot to cold cycle was very short (about 2 minutes hot to cold, then 2 minutes back). What a pain. And potentially dangerous too. We found it better to step back so the shower was only on our lower legs during extremes rather than trying to make adjustments which tended to compound the problem as things got too hot or cold.

Easy walk to the harbor, Little Italy restaurants, Sante Fe trolley station. Bed was comfortable. Nice view on the bayside especially the 14th floor. A bit noisy though with a trolley crossing a couple blocks away. Nice buffet breakfast included, although scrambled eggs with ham or sausage every day for 6 days does become a bit tiring.

Room Tip: Request a bayside room, away from the elevator and higher up (14th floor is the top).

San Diego is definitely a driving city but this location and hotel make it a great value for your money. They had recently renovated at the time that we stayed so there were no more loud construction noises or debris. Windows were new and the bathroom as well.
