“Great time at the Bay Club Hotel”
Reviewed May 4, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Bay Club Hotel & Marina for four days this past April 25th. We were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and were eager to return to this hotel since we had stayed here many years ago and loved it.

Tim (the night manager) was so helpful! He made our stay such a pleasant one. In fact, the entire staff was great. We were booked in a beautiful suite on the second floor, overlooking the marina. Since we had purchased the dinner and a view package we didn't have to worry about breakfast (which is complimentary with your stay anyway) and we also had dinner included each night. The food was great and they even allowed us to switch to having lunch on one of those days instead of dinner so that we could enjoy dinner out in San Diego.

We had such a great time and most of it was spent simply relaxing on our balcony overlooking the beautiful marina. We will definitely return again and again.

We did a global search for decent hotels in San Diego, keeping in mind safe location, close proximity to the main attractions and price.

We had a past midnight arrival and also made a request for a crib that had actually not been put in the room. The front desk lady fixed the problem instantly and to my big surprise, it was a real wood crib, not one of those crappy playpens that other hotels give you.

Breakfasts were absolutely delicious and serving staff was the most helpful and accomodating I can remember in a very long time.

Rooms were clean and overlooked the marina (it was our request).

We did not use their pool or hot tub, as we were so beat by the time we got into the room, with all the walking we did at amusement parks.

My partner and I chose the Bay Club Hotel and Marina largely for its scenic location on Shelter Island. We were not disappointed. Our second floor marina-view room was great--beautiful view and ample space. It is an excellent choice if you prefer to avoid the mega hotels in San Diego, which are full of the convention crowds. Hot buffet breakfast is included each morning, far better than any similar hotel breakfast I've had. The decor is a bit simple and slightly dated, but overall quite acceptable. Free wireless internet is provided. The staff at reception and dining room were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We did experience some noise in the room and public areas, due to a rather boistrous large group staying there, but after their departure, it was quieter. We walked to dinner at nearby Bali Hai restaurant one evening, which we highly recommend too. This is a hotel gem which will showcase beautiful San Diego for your visit!

We loved most everything about this hotel. It was quiet, had beautiful views from just about everywhere, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and it was convenient to all the attractions San Diego has to offer.
The room wasn't fancy, but was clean and big, with a little balcony overlooking the marina (and the beautiful sunsets). The $5 charge for parking is the cheapest we found at any other hotel in San Diego.Beds were comfy, tv was decent, and we had the option of 24 hour room service.
We didn't use that option, as the hotel includes a full breakfast in the price of the room. We expected a continental breakfast, as you would normally be offered in large chain hotels, but no...each morning there was a full buffet breakfast served in the restaurant, and it was *good*!
The pool is small but in a lovely setting, and surrounded by glass walls to keep out the wind. Across the street from the hotel is a beach and a wonderfully scenic embarcadero populated by friendly locals on their daily walk.
I have no complaints about this hotel at all, and would absolutely stay here again (and plan to), as well as recommending it to friends and family.

We (two couples) stayed at the Bay Club prior to our cruise last week. The property was exactly as pictured on the web site and we were very pleased. The web site also mentioned a special, which we took advantage of.....a 2nd floor room on the marina side, full breakfast, including eggs, bacon and all the extras, full dinner, and parking for $189. Dinner was excellent and the seafood dishes were fresh and delicious. Every staff member was friendly and accomodating and the rooms were clean and comfortable. We parked our car for the duration of our cruise in a safe, underground area for a nominal fee and the shuttle took us directly to the cruise dock and picked us up there at the end of our cruise. The marina side is more quiet and we enjoyed watching the boats from our balcony in the evening. We also enjoyed a pleasant moonlit walk along the beach after dinner and felt completely safe. The rooms were very clean, but the only negative comment might be that the carpeting throughout the property was due for replacement soon!

Overall we had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. I would recommend getting a second story room so you get a good view of the bay or the marina. The view from our room and the restaurant was awesome ( we had a marina view). The staff was pleasant and accomodating. The food for the continental breakfast and dinner was good, but nothing spectacular. Compared to other hotels in the area, I thought it was a good value for what we paid.

There is a pier and small beach within walking distance and it is close to Point Loma and Cabrillo National Monument which has some great tide pools. It's a 10-15 drive to Sea World and Mission Beach. If you have time, visit the USS Midway and take the tour. It is well worth it. Plan on 3-4 hours to see everything on the ship.

  • Liked — The view and close location to San Diego attractions
  • Disliked — Wireless internet was poor.

Just got back from a wonderful 3-night stay at the Bay Club. We had a corner room facing the harbor which was very clean and bright. The complimentary buffet breakfast each morning was very good with a great variety, always hot and plentiful. The staff was wonderful, always very helpful and friendly. We ate in the restaurant our last night for dinner and enjoyed our meals. It was fun stopping in at the lounge in the afternoons after a long day of exploring San Diego to take advantage of the happy hour each day and have Brandi make us yummy drinks or pour refreshing, cold drafts. As previously mentioned, the Bay Club is San Diego's best kept secret, and I would recommend it to everyone.

  • Disliked — Leaving to come home to cold Boston.
