We spent 6 nights at this beautiful property .We were in a lower floor Fairway view room so the view was not as good as other rooms elsewhere BUT the room itself was large with a superb and very spacious bathroom and a small, sunny- in- the- afternoon balcony. There was no noise and the housekeepers kept it spotlessly clean. We could not have been happier even if we had a suite.
The public rooms are very grand and wonderfully appointed and we wish we had had less jet lag to enjoy the ambience of the lounges at night.Having spent all our days touring and walking we were early to bed.
The hotel is in spectacular grounds and although it lends itself to weddings and corporate functions these were kept well away from hotel guests, with their own staff, so that there was no interfrerence or inconvenience.
The breakfasts are excellent and a room and breakfast rate is well worth negotiating for as the food allowance is more than adequiate.
The hotel is well placed north of the city and access to the beaches and smaller towns of North County coastal is very easy and well worth the effort where you can find unique shopping and small family run restaurants for evening meals. The sea is cold but walking is so easy and relaxing as the beaches are sparsely populated.
The famous zoo is well worth a visit (and we are in our 50's).
There are excellent factory outlet stores to the north and the local outdoor shopping malls are very pleasant to visit with plenty of different eating options.
A Sat Nav proved to be a god send as the city freeways are very complex and driving proved to be so much more relaxed for being told where to go!We took our own, having paid for the maps for the western half of the USA before going.Hiring a sat nav is now easy but charges vary and some negotiation is called for.
We would recommend this hotel without reservation.

The Grand del Mar is beautiful, this is one of the few 5 star hotels in the US that can keep up with the European 5 star standard. Everything is of great quality, and not only appears to be. The furnishings in the entire hotel are vary tasteful. The pool facilities are gorgeous and please everybody by having a quiet pool for adults, another one for children and an extra one for babies and toddlers. We had snacks at the pool and ate at the Amaya restaurant every evening of our 3 night stay because it was so nice. The seating outside is beautiful and you are not rushed like in many restaurants in US.
Service was excellent. We stayed here with two children 9 and 14 and really enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately we are not golfers, but I am sure the golfing is also excellent

i think this is our 5th time staying at the grand and we come to san diego for the grand.
again we were put into a double queen room with a balcony that gets am sun overlooking the fairway. our usual room was not available upon check in but this room is equally lovely.
the staff, the service, and the property is absolutely first class and many of the employees remember us from previous stays. they all make us feel like we are home once again.

this time my 16 year old son tried the twilight golf which comes with a cart and complimentary clubs. it was so convenient because we didn't have to lug his clubs from back home. we started at 3pm and finished at 7:30pm and these 4.5 hours were so enjoyable that we will have to golf twilight the next time here. from some of the holes on the course, we can see the entire resort and the lush grounds and it is a sight to behold and never to be forgotten. we felt like we were in a different world while golfing here at the grand del mar. like i said earlier, the price included a cart, clubs, and throughout the course, there were washrooms, even in marble!, and bottled water stations. it was so well thought out and it was a pleasure to be on the course for over 4 hours.

the resort itself is amazing...marble, gold guilding everywhere but yet it is not loud at all. quiet elegance and luxury permeate the entire resort ....the main family pool is the nicest with underwater music, bar, umbrellas, and a separate area with sand . the entire resort is in a canyon so the grounds are lush, green, and immaculately kept.

everyone has to stay at the grand del mar at least once to experience this grandeur and luxury....bravo to the grand and its staff and employees once again...many many thanks for making our stay a magnificent one again.

My family and I have been fortunate over the last few years to stay at a number of genuine 5 star hotels, many of which we've selected after consulting Trip Advisor.

This year after reading a number of reviews, and after correspondance with the Hotel we chose to stay here. Whilst a little more than we wanted to pay we made sacrifices elsewhere so that we could stay within our overall budget.(We were on a three week road trip).

In summary:

Pre-visit: We had excellent correspondance with Brianne and Josh in the Sales team ahead of our visit, with Brianne in particular helping to arrange restuarants, and Josh making a number of valuable recomendations. They continued to offer support and excellent service throughout our stay.

Check in and arrival: After speaking with the hotel team we arrived at 12.30PM knowing that we could use the facilities whilst waiting for the room to be made ready. The valet, and Bell Boys did a great job and our first impression was extremely positive!

The check in team were equally welcoming, and promised to get a "rush on" so that we could be in our room quickly. One we were told was almost ready. Great we thought, albeit the early check in did not arise, and I had to chase up the front office team. Jon the Front Office Manager got involved and recognised that there was a problem and made great efforts to get us into our room, and ensured that we recieved excellent service whilst waiting. This excellent service continued for the duration of the stay.

Room: Many of the reviews on here "wax lyrical" about the rooms and we concur with all the positive comments.

Hotel and facilities: The Swimming Pool, Spa, and Gym were first class, with the Service around the Pool the best we've come across. Jason and the team ensured a pleasant and restful time was add.

Restuarants: With the exception of Addison we ate and drank at all of the Bars and Restaurants. We personally prefered breakfast at the Golf Club, Lunch by the pool, and Evening Meal at the Golf Club or in Amaya. We finished most nights in the wonderful bar area with a cocktail. At each location the Service was excellent and the Food Quality befitting of a Five Star Hotel!

Golf: Whilst staying at the Hotel we played at Torrey Pines, and at the Grand Del Mar. The course here was in better shape, and a real test of Golf. All the staff associated with the Golf course were a credit to the Hotel. We particularly enjoyed using the practice facilties.

General: What made an excellent stay into an unforgettable experience were the little extras. From the gifts in the room for special occasions to the courtesy car which we took advantage of.

As mentioned by many what sets this hotel apart is the Service provided by the finest staff that i've come across on my travels. All of the Staff we encountered genuinely appeared to enjoy working here, and took great pride in the Service we offered.

We arrived at the Hotel as Guests and we felt that we left as friends, no higher complement can I give. We will be back!!

My wife and four children spent three incredible nights at the Grand Del Mar. The only disappointment was having to leave. I could go on and on, but a quick highlights:

A week or so before our arrival I received a call from Nicholle (sp?), the customer service representative who had been assigned to us. She inquired as to what she could do to make our stay more pleasant, if there were any special needs, if she could answer any questions, etc. I mentioned that the purpose of our trip was to drop our oldest off at college, and that the day of our check-out was our youngest's 11th birthday. Sure enough, on our first evening in the hotel, room service appeared with a wonderful pastry and fruit arrangement, and on the dish was written (in chocolate sauce) "Good Luck in College!". And on the night before our check-out a similar, but different, arrangement appeared wishing our youngest a happy birthday. No additional charge, I didn't have to ask for it, just outstanding customer service.

The hotel is incredibly beautiful, the staff is attentive, and the whole experience just wonderful.
