“Absolutely Perfect”
Reviewed August 21, 2014

This was the 5th time we stayed at the Grand Del Mar, so we were not surprised at the level of perfection we experienced. This time, however, we were there for a family reunion with 19 of our nearest and dearest, ranging from age 6-71. It was a very expensive splurge for us, but we are so glad that this is the place we picked for our first gathering in over 3 years. I had specifically requested that all rooms be on the first level and as close together as possible. I thought this would be difficult for the resort to accomplish, since we had 9 rooms reserved and we needed to be sure that 4 pair of the rooms were Kings connecting with 2 Queens. Before we arrived I called several times to remind them of our request. I was told not to worry, it was all taken care of. I was so pleasantly surprised to find that 7 of our rooms were next to each other and the other 2 at a right angle to them, all on the first floor, facing exactly the courtyard I had requested. It continued to get better. The rooms are huge and gorgeous. the bathrooms have 2 sinks, a large shower and a deep soaking tub. Every amenity has been taken care of.
I also had planned a Sunday brunch for 34 people on the patio of the Amaya restaurant. Greg Schirra, the manager, could not have been nicer or more helpful. Tables were arranged so that our group was all together and although I am sure we overwhelmed the kitchen with our orders, the service was outstanding and gracious. For the rest of our stay we were greeted every morning by name and our coffee and tea orders were actually remembered from the previous day.
The property is spectacular. It was great being on the first floor because we could walk anywhere outside without having to go through the hotel. The quiet pool is wonderful and they really do enforce the no cell phone rule. We loved that. Our grandkids wanted to spend most of the time at one of the family pools. We usually ordered food and snacks there and, as everywhere else at the resort, the service was wonderful.
We availed ourselves of the tennis courts and the kids loved having space to throw around a baseball or football in the courtyard. Some of the kids wanted to go horseback riding, but we were unable to arrange that. Maybe next time... The resort is inland, but only a few miles from the beach and the hotel provided towels, beach chairs and even boogie boards to make our day at the beach very pleasant
Thank you to everyone at the Grand Del Mar for making our family reunion so memorable.

Room Tip: We love the grand floor rooms.

Green Features: Very eco-friendly. We were asked on check in if we would like to re-use our towels or have them replace every day. The property is entirely non-smoking. Wonderful!

We stayed at this property as we wanted a luxury hotel that also offered golf. What a pleasant surprise to find a beautiful property, superb service and fantastic dining. We stayed in a suite with two luxurious bathrooms and a lovely sitting area with a balcony overlooking the pool. We had the pleasure of eating at Addison...right up there with French Laundry. A true culinary experience...
We played golf the next day. Great course and even better because we had a pleasant, knowledgeable caddie. Although the grounds and facilities were fantastic, it was the exceptional service that made it so memorable. Even before we arrived, the concierge services went out of their way to accommodate us. In addition to items at the hotel, they also made reservations at some great restaurants in La Jolla. We have recommended Grand Del Mar to many people and we will certainly be returning for another wonderful visit!

Room Tip: Suites are unbelievably beautiful!

My wife and I had a work project that needed some solitude, and this looked like the perfect place. We holed up in room 325, a beautiful room overlooking the adult pool for eleven days. the location was perfect for the work and the hotel lives up to its reputation.

If you look at previous reviews, we have been very fortunate to stay in some wonderful hotels. As US hotels go, this is either at or very near the top. The hotel has an incredible amount of charm, and the owners and developers went to quite a bit of work to take this way above the mark that a hotel of this quality and price would normally go in terms of design and build out. No small detail is left out, from the gold leaf on the railings to the beautiful cloth material inlaid into the ceilings of some of the public rooms.

Having stayed at some of Europe's great hotels, we found the ambiance and feel of this to be on par with the Florence Four Seasons, albeit that is much older, and was formerly a convent. The front entrance reminded us a bit of the Rome's St. Regis.

However, a hotel is not just about looks. It is also about the staff, and this is one place that this hotel excels. Never have we stayed at the hotel where the staff was as well-trained, and as on top of their game than as at The Grand. Everyone was polite beyond description, knew how to do their job well, was pleasant and conversational. When I ordered a Martini at the pool and the pool attendant (I think Arturo?) explained that they had no blue cheese olives, it was no major issue. When he showed up with the Martini, and had run to another bar to get the olives, that was impressive.

Our room attendant Najara (?) was super, and when we found she was no longer servicing our room, we requested her back. We needed to send out some laundry and dry cleaning, and they do it on premise and it was completed in a couple of hours perfectly.

We enjoyed Amaya restaurant, but because of our work schedule ate most of our meals either through room service (thank you Susie and Nick and staff for creating a special heirloom tomato salad for us each evening). Michael and Tatiana in the bar also made sure to have our favorite libations available whenever we showed up.

If it sounds like we got to know some of these people, we did. This is what makes a great hotel. Good people, who help you when you need help, but that you get to know as more than just the staff.

We thank the hotel and great management team for the great job they did during our stay. We would not hesitate to go back at a moment's notice and spend another month there if we have more work to finish (two if we don't)!

Room Tip: If you are adults - rooms off the adult pool are great. We stayed in 325, and it was perfect.

This place was a perfect 4 day getaway for my hubby and I. It's a great location to see San Diego and also explore other beach towns in the area. The hotel itself is amazing. Great staff, great rooms and incredible spa and swimming pool. It was very relaxing and you feel pampered the entire time. Loved it.

The staff goes out of their way to make sure your stay is 1st class. The property was beautiful and elegant. No details were left out when they built The Grand Del Mar. Having never been there before my only disappointment was that they were not on the ocean but a few miles away. However they had what appeared to be a top notch golf course and had I not been getting over an injury, I might have enjoyed playing a round or two there. The food was excellent in the breakfast restaurant. We didn't dine in the evenings so I can't say what that was like but I'm betting it was ever bit as good. They actually have a 5 star venue that is rare for independent operators let alone a hotel operation. This is a must try if you are looking for a first class property and service.

This hotel reminded us in style and elegance of our stay at the Four Seasons in Florence. They have old world charm even though they are relatively new. We stayed for 12 days working on a project and throughout our stay the staff was consistent, attentive and pleasant. Of course, some are more so than others, but overall, the staff did everything in its power to exceed our expectations. If we wanted a martini at the pool with blue cheese olives and they were not on hand, they would go to another bar or restaurant on the property and ensure we had them. When we had the opportunity to chat with one of the managers and share our experiences, he came to our room to introduce himself and personally deliver a gift of chocolates. We became familiar with a few of the staff members who were delightful, especially Tatianna and Michael in the main bar. When we learned our housekeeper was going to be switched, we called housekeeping and requested she continue servicing our room, and they readily agreed. It does not get much better than this. I would say the only misstep is with the car valet service. During the day, they seem rather disinterested and although we only requested our vehicle a couple of times, we actually walked over and got in and drove off ourselves, rather than the customary "delivery". It saved us a few dollars in tips, but did not make us feel very welcome or appreciated as guests. On the other hand , the staff later in the day was much more friendly and attentive, even jovial . We are not seeking bowing and curtsying, however, attentive valet service is kind of expected at a resort like this. Its difficult to be perfect, but our experience here is as close as it gets, in a U.S. hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid the "relaxation" pool rooms if you want your daytime hours to be quiet. Although it...

This is the only hotel I have stayed at that I really liked in S. CA. The rooms are beautiful, the area is serene, they have service down. The food is okay but at least there are various choices right there at the property.

The pools are great, the water temperature is good, it is not too busy, they don't have stupid rules like the ones at the Casa Del Mar.

Great for a romantic getaway or a family getaway. Loved it.

Room Tip: Used the Am Ex rooms
