“Fabulous property..with everything you could need!”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

I was here for a meeting and for some reason my expectations were not that high. i was not at all familiar with the reputation of this truly 5 star resort. Wish I had brought my wife along as she would have really enjoyed the stay! They had everything I needed including a great little product called freshends...
Felt like I was in another country, but really only in San Diego!!! Almost felt like a private Italian villa or castle!
Would highly recommend it for a couples weekend!

Room Tip: The room felt like a suite, excellent amenities and turn down service..they even tied my charger wit...

The Grand del Mar is top notch as a resort hotel. Very luxurious. Great service. Great facilities for family, spa'ing, business, dining, sleeping, etc. The beds are so comfortable, you want to peek under the sheets to see what brand of mattress you're sleeping on, and the bathrooms are large, luxurious and have every amenity you could ask for.
Our room was quiet and had a beautiful view of the grounds and hills in the distance.
The Addison and Amaya are flawless restaurants. Great wine lists. Terrific food. The Grand del Mar offers great outside dining as well as elegant formal, or casually elegant indoor dining options.
The only negative about the Grand is that it's not at the beach, but that also means you get warmer, drier, less foggy weather. They have a nice golf course, hiking trails, spa and gym, and they are not far from everything San Diego has to offer, although you'll need a car to stay here and get to other sites.

Leave the real world for a few days to be calmed and thrilled all in the same place! Being ere is wallowing in spa-like serenity while perched in the middle of an architectural jewelry box. Add a massage, a vista-laden canyon hike on property, an evening in any number of dreamy spots around the hotel and you are in paradise. Only wish I could see the ocean, but it's just a short bit away and leaves room for the sumptuous golf course to surround the resort. Really could not be happier. Pricey but so unique.

We stayed for four nights beginning New Year's Day. We stayed in Rm 316 and it was so quiet we heard nothing when inside our room. The room was extremely sound proof. We were surprised at children in the dining room on our first meal at The Amaya. Some kid noise...but it was Winter Break so guess to be expected. The food is amazing there. We had two dinners and a breakfast at The Amaya.
We were thrilled to be greeted the first night with Champagne and chocolate dipped strawberries for our 25th - a very nice touch!
The room was just beautiful - nothing forgotten.
Everyone of the staff so willing to help you. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: The veranda pretty cold in winter - might not want

1st off the staff is second to none. Everyone was great and the concierge service was over and above any service we have had here in the states or internationally. Grounds are quiet and immaculate. By all means, visit the Addison, the on property restaurant. Unreal food and again the service is top notch and makes everyone feel special. Food at the Addison is on par with Petrus, French Laundry or any big name French restaurant for that matter. Make time for the spa, facilities at the spa are nothing great, but again the staff waits on you hand and foot to make it memorable. Our new favorite place in one of our favorite cities.

Room Tip: Rooms around the spa pool are very quiet.

We stayed here four night nights beginning New Years Day. The resort location is remote from San Diego, so unless you are a hiker, golfer or mountain biker, you might not appreciate the location. The hotel has a world class spa and restaurant. We booked ahead with The Addison and did an eight course menu with paired wines. It was an amazing experience, but a lot of food. Six would be perfect if you're really hungry. Best rooms are 345 and up because they are on the top floor and far from foot traffic in the halls or any pools or other areas of noise. If you are going in the winter, don't bother to get a veranda room, because its just a little too chilly to sit out at night or in the morning when you'll likely be in your room. The canyons surrounding Del Mar are beautiful, they have a huge gas fire each night that overlooks the canyons that they light up. We saw a group of deer passing through. My husband had his best massage ever and my facialist, Heather was excellent. My only regret is that my husband's back hurt, so we didn't pack our clubs, but hiking through the canyon some of the holes looks really challenging and interesting. The only negative is that there are a surprising number of children at this resort and though their explorers club is on the second floor they are in the bars at night and the breakfast area in the morning. Strange for a Golf and Spa resort. I took my young ones to places such as Atlantis and Disney World. They have a blast there and I don't think there is enough to keep children happy at this remote resort.

We stayed at the Grand Del Mar for our 20th wedding anniversary, and elected to bring our kids along based on some of the other positive reviews for family vacationing. Very pleased to report that everything we read is true: this is the rare resort property that works well for everything from family time together to couple time.

THE GOOD

The staff at the Grand Del Mar is, in a word, remarkable. No guest need goes unattended. It was cooler at night when we got there, and we'd noticed some propane heaters around the property. Could we have one on our patio? Absolutely. We left some seashells in the trunk of our rental car; could they be brought to the room? Absolutely. From the welcome amenities (cake and champagne for our anniversary and personalized giant chocolate-chip cookies for the kids) to the turndown service (chocolate-covered Oreos) to the beach service (chairs, umbrellas, towels, bottled waters, sand toys) to the pool service ("frozen grapes, sir?"), this was simply the best resort staff experience I've ever had.

The grounds are amazing, and are set up well for families. Our room opened out onto a beautiful garden courtyard with a grassed-in area that was set up for croquet or bocce on a daily basis. Right around the corner was a firepit area with big Adirondack rockers. Everywhere you turn, this resort is trying to get you together with your kids or your spouse for fun or relaxation.

The food is fantastic. All resort food is overpriced, but in one of two ways: it's either overpriced like a resort (=$19 burger that sucks) or it's overpriced like a really nice restaurant (=$19 burger for, frankly, a pretty amazing burger). Grand Del Mar is the latter. Everywhere we went, there's a tasty option, and the everywhere-in-the-resort kids' menu is handy.

The rooms are wonderful. The settee in the king guest room made for some nice evenings reading with a glass of wine, and the double-queens are great for kids. Fantastic soaker tubs. Beds, be warned, are on the firm side - not in a bad way, but if you're used to a softer bed, this is not one. Interior climate control among the best I've ever seen (no freezing/stagnant air/etc conundrum).

THE BAD

Nothing, really. This isn't a resort where you describe anything as 'bad.' There's some questionable stuff, like the main pool, which wasn't really being heated during our stay, and doesn't have any stairs into it, just ladders - apparently, there's no lounging about in the family pool, and you're meant to jump in, swim, climb out. Odd, but not definitively 'bad' by any stretch. (There's still another entire well-heated pool that our kids enjoyed, plus multiple hot tubs). The canyon hike directions send you down the main road, but the main road has signs on it stating that pedestrians shouldn't walk there. The black chess pieces in the library are missing one rook. These were, literally, my only complaints the entire time I was there, and they weren't really 'fixable,' so I left them be.

THE OVERALL

Go. You'll thank yourself. It's the kind of resort you actually come back from well-rested and ready to go.

Room Tip: If you're traveling with kids 12 and under, consider a ground floor room opening onto the croque...
