“Great Winter Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

We stayed here four night nights beginning New Years Day. The resort location is remote from San Diego, so unless you are a hiker, golfer or mountain biker, you might not appreciate the location. The hotel has a world class spa and restaurant. We booked ahead with The Addison and did an eight course menu with paired wines. It was an amazing experience, but a lot of food. Six would be perfect if you're really hungry. Best rooms are 345 and up because they are on the top floor and far from foot traffic in the halls or any pools or other areas of noise. If you are going in the winter, don't bother to get a veranda room, because its just a little too chilly to sit out at night or in the morning when you'll likely be in your room. The canyons surrounding Del Mar are beautiful, they have a huge gas fire each night that overlooks the canyons that they light up. We saw a group of deer passing through. My husband had his best massage ever and my facialist, Heather was excellent. My only regret is that my husband's back hurt, so we didn't pack our clubs, but hiking through the canyon some of the holes looks really challenging and interesting. The only negative is that there are a surprising number of children at this resort and though their explorers club is on the second floor they are in the bars at night and the breakfast area in the morning. Strange for a Golf and Spa resort. I took my young ones to places such as Atlantis and Disney World. They have a blast there and I don't think there is enough to keep children happy at this remote resort.

Room Tip: Best rooms are 345 and up because they are on the top floor and far from foot traffic in the halls o...

We stayed at the Grand Del Mar for our 20th wedding anniversary, and elected to bring our kids along based on some of the other positive reviews for family vacationing. Very pleased to report that everything we read is true: this is the rare resort property that works well for everything from family time together to couple time.

THE GOOD

The staff at the Grand Del Mar is, in a word, remarkable. No guest need goes unattended. It was cooler at night when we got there, and we'd noticed some propane heaters around the property. Could we have one on our patio? Absolutely. We left some seashells in the trunk of our rental car; could they be brought to the room? Absolutely. From the welcome amenities (cake and champagne for our anniversary and personalized giant chocolate-chip cookies for the kids) to the turndown service (chocolate-covered Oreos) to the beach service (chairs, umbrellas, towels, bottled waters, sand toys) to the pool service ("frozen grapes, sir?"), this was simply the best resort staff experience I've ever had.

The grounds are amazing, and are set up well for families. Our room opened out onto a beautiful garden courtyard with a grassed-in area that was set up for croquet or bocce on a daily basis. Right around the corner was a firepit area with big Adirondack rockers. Everywhere you turn, this resort is trying to get you together with your kids or your spouse for fun or relaxation.

The food is fantastic. All resort food is overpriced, but in one of two ways: it's either overpriced like a resort (=$19 burger that sucks) or it's overpriced like a really nice restaurant (=$19 burger for, frankly, a pretty amazing burger). Grand Del Mar is the latter. Everywhere we went, there's a tasty option, and the everywhere-in-the-resort kids' menu is handy.

The rooms are wonderful. The settee in the king guest room made for some nice evenings reading with a glass of wine, and the double-queens are great for kids. Fantastic soaker tubs. Beds, be warned, are on the firm side - not in a bad way, but if you're used to a softer bed, this is not one. Interior climate control among the best I've ever seen (no freezing/stagnant air/etc conundrum).

THE BAD

Nothing, really. This isn't a resort where you describe anything as 'bad.' There's some questionable stuff, like the main pool, which wasn't really being heated during our stay, and doesn't have any stairs into it, just ladders - apparently, there's no lounging about in the family pool, and you're meant to jump in, swim, climb out. Odd, but not definitively 'bad' by any stretch. (There's still another entire well-heated pool that our kids enjoyed, plus multiple hot tubs). The canyon hike directions send you down the main road, but the main road has signs on it stating that pedestrians shouldn't walk there. The black chess pieces in the library are missing one rook. These were, literally, my only complaints the entire time I was there, and they weren't really 'fixable,' so I left them be.

THE OVERALL

Go. You'll thank yourself. It's the kind of resort you actually come back from well-rested and ready to go.

Room Tip: If you're traveling with kids 12 and under, consider a ground floor room opening onto the croque...

Personally I think if you are able to afford even a night at this hotel, you should experience it once. It is super expensive, but I think worth it. The grounds and hotel public areas are incredible. Awesome pools, tennis courts, walking trail and views.
I'm so glad we had a $50 credit per day with Amex for breakfast, otherwise I would have skipped it. Breakfast on the outdoor terrace every morning was one of my favorite things ever! Even if no credit, make sure you eat outside there at least once! The waiters were all so nice and helpful, the food - delicious with fresh juices and smoothies and the best hash browns I've ever had.

We had to change rooms since for some reason our room and hallway smelled way too strongly of chlorine. The room itself (and we got an upgrade) was not all that big but had the highest ceilings, wonderful balcony and awesome, huge bathroom. The decor itself I found to be too much, (a lot of gold...gold frames surrounding the flat screen, etc.) but hey, at least the bed was super comfortable.

If you can, treat yourself to a spa treatment. On a Monday I had the entire spa to myself...Amazing experience! Elaine, the spa attendant treated me like a princess. Seriously that might have been the most relaxing day of my life.

Make sure to go walking/hiking at nearby Torrey Pines on the ocean, too.

This sure is the good life... too bad it was only 3 days!

The Grand Del Mar in San Diego a 5 star hotel resort. Room rate via platinum Amex was 395.00/night and included a room upgrade, $50.00 daily breakfast credit, a $100.00 spa credit. We were upgraded to a Prado Suite. The room was one of the best we have ever stayed in at 1,000 sq. ft. Two bathrooms and a living room. Each night a little gift cookies candy etc. The appointments were outstanding. Valet parking was $30.00 a day. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. I had a massage as part of the spa credit and as one would expect it was great. We played tennis and sat by the golf course. Two nights was not enough. This hotel is inland from Del Mar and is isolated from downtown San Diego but who cares.

Room Tip: The Prado was outstanding
