this property is perfect, the surroundings beautiful and aside from the opulent decor...there is nothing that isnt wonderful here. great golf, tennis, spa, 3 pools, jacuzzi. right down to your immediate arrival the staff are friendly, attentive and all is run very smoothly. I cant imagine ever having to leave this wonderful place and highly recommend that everyone take the chance and stay here...at least for one night...quick drive to the beach...not on the beach, but with cooler temperatures, happy to stay here with all perks!!!

Very nice resort. The decor was a little too ornate and opulent and the resort was a little too big for our tastes, but it's a very well maintained property with good service overall. We enjoyed the adult-only relaxation pool area and had a very pleasant breakfast with a very attentive waiter. While we didn't go to their restaurant Addison this time, we've been there in the past and can attest that it is a gem. The chef, who used to work at the French Laundry, really understands flavors and is doing some really interesting and delicious modern cooking.

The only thing that marred an otherwise pleasant trip was the alarm going off at 7:40am on a Saturday. It took the resort a good 20-25 minutes or so before it was canceled without much of an explanation, while strobe lights went on and off in our room the entire time. When we mentioned the "surprise wakeup" as we were checking out, the front desk staff just laughed, which we found to be a little inappropriate. We understand that emergencies can happen, but it was nonetheless a disruption and it would have been nice to receive an apology at least (especially given that whatever it was, the alarm was pulled prematurely since we weren't actually required to evacuate). Hopefully it's not a regular occurrence.

This resort is fantastic. I am genuinely surprised to read any negative reviews about it.

From the minute you drive up, you see a long windy road with gorgeous landscaping. This place reportedly has 400 acres. Also, there is a security gate you have to pass through, which makes you feel secure.

Everyone who works here is helpful and attentive, from the guy watering the indoor plants to the maid and front desk person. They heard it was my birthday so we found a dessert and bottle of champagne on ice in our room.

The room we have is beautiful. They gave me exactly what I requested, a quiet room with 2 beds on the top floor. The view was of the beautiful grounds. The flat screen tv has a frame around it, which is attractive. The bathroom is gorgeous with a huge sunken tub, large shower with a step for you to place your leg when shaving, 2 sinks, a magnifying makeup mirror with light, a separate closet for the toilet, a small flat screen tv, and a large closet and safe.

Housekeeping is fantastic. Everything was folded and picked up. Any charger cords were wrapped up with a bow. Candy and slippers were placed out at night. The heating And air conditioning works well, and so does their fire safety equipment. The safety issue is particularly important since fire and dry weather frequently affects this area. There was a brief fire alarm when we were here, and they handled it quickly with no know fire issues that I heard of.

The two swimming pools are great. I really liked the relaxation pool, which was heated at a perfectly comfortable temperature of 81 degrees. It was quiet and clean with someone to bring you food and drinks. No cell phones allowed. Children and cell phones are welcome at the other pool.

I also enjoyed a complimentary zumba class plus the fitness room, which had pretty new equipment.

The restaurant, Addison, is great. A hotel staff person drove us over for an excellent meal. Plus, the clubhouse and Amaya serve pretty good food.

Honestly, any complaints should be taken up with management since they really seem to care about their service, which is excellent.

My family and I just returned from a seven night stay at the GDM and we had a wonderful time. The property is beautiful - large and spread out so that it never feels crowded. The staff is extremely well trained - on par with MO or FS - they go above and beyond and never say no to anything. We had the concierges arrange excursions (surfing, kayaking, etc.) and dinners around town and everything was perfectly planned to the minute - including transportation in the hotel cars. Restaurants and spa were also great. This is one of the finest resorts in the US.

We were here in January for a few nights to celebrate a birthday and play some golf. The service was outstanding from the moment we arrived until our departure. We are already planning our next visit.

It has been two years since I stayed at this resort and it has managed to maintain its excellence in just about every way. Rooms - better quality than you will see in most Four Seasons and Ritz Carltons....and spotless with all the right touches from housekeeping (can you believe the housekeeper actually put a ribbon around my laptop's cable to the electrical outlet, to make sure it was neat and tidy?!). This time I had a couple of spa treatments - excellent. And, I have stayed here three times in the last four years (a total of about 14 nights) and have yet to have a bad food item of any kind.

Finally, a word on their staff. As I have noted to several hotel people over the years, that you can have a great physical plant, but if the staff is not good, the hotel is a waste of time. Somehow, the Grand del Mar has staff recruitment and training down to a science. Everyone - and I do mean everyone - I met was friendly, professional and more than helpful.

This hotel is not cheap, but I can assure you that you will more than get your money's worth! Keep up the great work, Grand del Mar!

Facility is new and attractive. Do not expect service compared to four seasons or Ritz Carlton. Horrible concierge staff - NYC subway ticket agents probably do a better job with service and directions. Beach service touted by the website is non existent. Hallway cleanliness is quite disgusting. Poorly marked corridors. Easy to get lost. Traffic all around, for location it should be better to stay at la jolla. Would not recommend this hotel. Hilton, Hyatt might be more reasonable four star options.
