“Perfect hostel”
Reviewed September 18, 2008

I have just returned from a week in California, where I stayed in San Diego LuckyDs Hostel for a few days. The hostel is located in the center of San Diego city, just walk away from downtown, Gaslamp discrict, conventional center, Petco Park,... there are numerous restaurants in neighbourhood, shops... Location is very safe, even by night. Hostel has also its own grill&bar, I could say you get more than you pay for.
There are several parking lots located just by this hostel, you pay only 5$ for 10hours. Its just great!
I booked a bed in Dormitory room (4 beds available). All rooms (actualy whole hostel) are restored, beds are new, comfortable. Rooms are very nice! There are 2 toilets and showers on each floor - but even though, there is no waiting line.
The room is cleaned and the beds are made every day. You get your towel and there is also bed linen and pillow included.
Each floor has its own e-net room for free.
There are also some excursions organised by hostel, and the price is great!
Free breakfast (cereals) each morning, just a grea deal to star your day...

Personel is young, very friendly and very helpfull. Overall I would say this is probably the best hostel I have ever stayed in on holidayand I am extremely fussy!
Is "a must" if you are in San Diego.

We stayed here for 3 nights....

this isn't the best hostel i've stayed in but was OK. They are refurbishing by the looks of it as there were workman all over the place and the place looked pretty run down, also the top floor smelt funny but luckily our room was on the bottom floor.

The bathrooms were clean though and the staff were really friendly. Also the common room was a good place to chill out and meet other people.

The hostel was in a good place too, within walking distance of the bars and clubs, the zoo and the greyhound station, and theres an awesome pizza place up the road! YUM!

Would stay there again, hopefully the building work will be finished by then.

My husband and I went for a quick San Diego get-away to use our zoo membership one last time before it expired. All we wanted was a place to crash near the gaslamp, which is exactly what we got. We went in with very low expectations and were meet with what we expected.
The hostel is still in remodel, giant-wholes-in-several-walls still under construction. The front desk is very simple and not at all fancy with the common room and kitchen right next to it. All the chairs were very stained and the kitchen area was barely in fair condition. The person who checked us in was friendly and helpful. She voluntarily took $10 off of our $55 private room charge because of the construction. When we got in our small room with a sink and tv the bed was not made and the bedding was wadded up in the middle of the bed. Having stayed at many hostels in Australia (but never in the states) I assumed they forgot to give us linens and we made the bed ourself. We asked for linens and the woman looked shocked that our bed wasn't made. She apologized and promised to have it ready when we returned from dinner.
Lucky D's offered a free dinner (sheperd's pie) in the kitchen area made by (supposedly) the manager. Honestly it didn't look appetizing. We specifically chose a cheap place to sleep so we could spend our money on the food and drink so we passed on the free meal went headed out 5th Street.
The bed was made when we returned and even though I had the creepy crawlies about the place as I tried to settle in, I ended up sleeping very well on a surprisingly comfortable mattress.
We took part in the all-you-can-make waffles for breakfast. They weren't fantastic but sufficient.
There weren't very many people staying there the night we were there but it was February. I could imagine the place a bit more bustling and fun in the high season. Hopefully they will have their construction done soon and make the place a bit more spiffy looking. The location was great and the cheapness worked for us but may not suit others.

  • Liked — Walking distance to the Gaslamp district
  • Disliked — did not appear very clean, construction inside the building
