“Tijuana Shopping 'Tour' if you can call it that....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2013

I am not really sure if you can call this a Tour....It was more like a bus ride with escort over the border.

We were asked to be ready at 7.30am, the bus took us to the meeting point where we waited for ages and then were directed to another bus, I think we left there at about 9.30am.

It's a long way there was no commentary along the way, just bad rap music and we had to drop some people off at Sea World in San Diego on the way.

Once we arrived at Mexico, we were told to get of f the bus and wait while he parked it, 10 mins past and we were thinking maybe we had been ditched! He eventually came back and said we had to get into a taxi in Mexico to go to the Tijuana shopping strip, there were only 4 of us on the tour plus the 'tour guide' he put both me and my 12yo son in the passenger front seat! Let me tell you Mexicans are NOT the safest drivers in the world!

Once we got there he said I'll meet you back here in 3 hours and was gone.

The actual Tijuana experience was great, the bartering and dealing, it was a real eye opener for my son. I have been once, 20 years ago and back then they had donkeys spray painted as Zebra's and they charge you for a photo, guess what, they are still doing it! Nearly every street corner has one.

We got some great souvenirs and I bought a great leather bag and jacket and a 1 litre bottle of Kahlua was only $10! Pity you can only bring back 1 ltr per person!

We met the tour guide at the pre-allocated time, did the dangerous drive back and waited in line at the border for nearly an hour.

We picked up the Sea World couple and headed back, the driver must have been in some sort of rush as he almost had 2 accidents and we didn't get back to our hotel until after 9pm because of the crazy Fri night traffic on the freeway.

Not a great 'Tour' but I would go back to Tijuana, it was fun.

“Great way to get an overview of San Diego!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2012

I must disagree with the previous reviews. Our tour went smooth and was a great value. They picked us up at 8:00 a.m. at our hotel. We boarded another bus at the harbor and proceeded on a 4 hour tour. We added the harbor tour for $14 and this was definitely worth it. Had time for lunch in Old Town at a great Mexican Restaurant. If you haven't been to San Diego before this is great way to get your bearings and then go back and visit the spots you want to explore. Thanks Gray Line.

“Complete Waste Of Time”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2012

I took the morning tour to Tijuana because "morning departure focuses more on the history and buildings of Tijuana" what a load of rubbish!!! We were dropped at a fence by a beach for 10 minutes and then abandoned in the town for 3 hours, absolutely no history or anything - don't bother, it was a complete waste of time and money. When I asked about the Cultural Centre I was told to get a cab there!!!!

“Our only day in San Diego: RUINED”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2012

Really disappointed in San Diego four hours Grayline City tour.

First of all, to be fair there was a parade going on on this particular day Dec 28, 2011.

However that does not justify the bad service we've received on our trip. We called to make a reservation the day before and they told us to meet by The Bay Cafe on North Harbor Drive and we had to be there by 8:10 at the latest. Since we are staying at a friend's house in Hemet we had to leave at 6 to make sure we don't miss the bus.

We arrived at the pickup location at 7:30 only to find out later there is a parade going on so the roads are blocked thus making the bus unable to get through. At this point we called the Grayline toll free number and was informed the pickup location has been changed to the Fish Market just south of the USS Midway Museum. We waited there for 20 minutes and still no cars were getting through, so then we called to make sure we are still at the right pickup place.

We were then informed again the pickup location has been moved to Hyatt hotel at the South end of North Harbor Drive. And was told there were several people like us waiting for Grayline. So we then again walked to Hyatt hotel to wait for the bus.

We stood outside the hotel for a good fifteen minutes and saw two Coach America busses pass by on the other side of the street of the hyatt hotel at which point we called the toll free number again to ask for more information. What we got was an impatient woman on the phone telling us just wait there and the bus is coming.

We asked the doorman at Hyatt hotel. He told us where we should wait. We waited and waited still the bus didn't come. Finally at 9:30 a Grayline bus pulled in front of Hyatt hotel main entrance. We were excited and relieved the bus is finally here. We were about to board the bus and the bus driver informed us this is not the bus for four hours city tour and that that bus has already been here and left a long time ago.

We were confused and frustrated. As we got off the bus, the Hyatt door man asked us why we got off the bus and that should be the right bus. we informed him of what the bus driver said and the doorman said it was impossible since he had been at the door since 6AM and that was the first Grayline bus to pull into Hyatt hotel.

We then called the Grayline toll free number again and asked where the bus was. The lady on the phone(same person who was impatient and told us to wait there earlier) said the bus is right in front of us. We then told her the bus driver said it's not the right bus and also informed her the doorman said it is the first bus that pulled into the hotel today. She kept saying no it's not true the bus has already came, waited and left. She then repeatedly said she doesn't know how we could have missed it. She then said hold on I'm going to transfer you to another person and didn't even give us a chance to say anything and just transferred us to an answering machine. Frustrated and upset, we hung up the phone.

We were very excited getting up at five in the morning ready for a great city tour but instead what we got was a very impatient phone operator telling us no we missed the bus when we've been waiting at the the front entrance of Hyatt since 8:15 AND the doorman who had been there since 6 said it was the first Grayline.

Not only did we have to call Grayline to find out the location changes ourselves, we were repeatedly told "no it's not true" by an impatient phone operator. We only have one day here in San Diego, and we wasted the whole morning waiting for a bus that was never going to come, and went through a lot more trouble looking for alternative tour activities nearby.

They are very unorganized, unprofessional, and with impatient staff. I have never been on a Grayline bus but after this experience I never will, nor would I ever recommend Grayline to anybody.

“A Great Day Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2011

We bought the San Diego Go Card as it included a trip to Tijuana and a San Diego City trip. As a Brit I had seen the news about the violence in Mexico but having meet various Mexicans on the City Tram system who assured us that it wasn’t all that way. The Gray Line tour to Tijuana was our first trip to Mexico. The trip included a brief tour of Tijuana city before dropping us off on Revolution Avenue for shopping. The driver gave us tips of where to shop and where to eat and remained with the bus so people could bring their shopping back to the bus. Would recommend this tour to people but would have taken the full day tour if I had the opportunity.
