This is a great little hotel and was exactly what we were looking for in San Diego – reasonably central, with a lovely, comfortable room to collapse into after a day of exploring the city. We stayed in one of the biggest rooms, which was really lovely. Very cool décor, a fish named Flo, outside patio area behind the room that was very quiet and ideal for eating breakfast in, and a great bathroom with an amazing walk-in shower.

While we were there the hotel did host some pool parties for non-guests, but they always finished early so the noise was never a problem for sleeping. We are considering going back to San Diego next year and will definitely stay here again if we do. I probably wouldn’t recommend it if you haven’t got a car (not sure there is much in the immediate area that you would want to see), but if you are driving then definitely give it a go.

Room Tip: Definitely go for one of the biggest rooms if you can - it's worth it to have the outdoor patio area.

This small boutique hotel is situated close to both downtown San Diego, Shelter Island and just minutes from the airport. The Pearl is somewhat of a subtle gem. It is easy to pass it as you drive along Rosecrans street, surrounded by cheap motels, fast food joints, and small stores on each side of the street. A funky sign on an otherwise plain looking building marks the spot. Once you enter the property you instantly understand you have left the world of Super 8′s, Ramadas and Comfort Inn’s. The mood is intimate, authentic, and hip, yet down to earth. Each of the 23 room’s have a light, contemporary design, with a large bed and a small fish bowl on the wall, in my case containing a fish called Felix. The hotel has a cool restaurant and bar, and holds frequent “dive-in” movies projected poolside.

The Pearl is not a luxury hotel, nor does it attempt to be. Its laid back vintage-modern ambiance, and very affordable price, makes it well worth it.

My husband and I recently stayed at The Pearl. We absolutely loved it! The ambiance is great, and is so retro! The staff is genuinely kind, and the food is amazing! My favorite part was the comfort of the beds. It's not everyday you sleep like a baby :)

We had a wonderful time. They offer complimentary bikes which are awesome to cruise around the harbor. The hotel is charming and very retro cool. We will stay again. The minus is that unless you are brave enough to jump into the pool and have the diners of the restaurant stare at you, then go for it. The pool is next to the restaurant which makes wanting to get in the pool awkward. But the restaurant lounge has a very hip feel to it.

The room is comfortable and mod. Hotel's restaurant serves a great burger. The employees are quite helpful and genuine. Worth recommending it to anyone. One bad comment about the hotel is the noise you get from the bar on weekends.

Room Tip: Don't get rooms facing the pool.
