“Great Value, Great Location”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

This is one of my first choices when I come to San Diego. I've stayed here twice- once for work and once for vacation. Both times I have enjoyed my stay. The location is great. It is within walking distance of the Gaslamp district (for restaurants and bars) and the waterfront area. It is also very close to a light rail stop. It is across the street from Horton Plaza if you're looking for some shopping. The "resort fee" is odd but they are upfront about it. They offer a free walking tour of the city on the weekends which is nice. The fitness center is small but bring your sneakers and head over to the convention center and run the stairs there!

Our two nights at the Sofia were pleasant, even though it was a rainy and windy two days. We were on our way to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. The hotel itself is very nicely appointed, clean, and well-staffed. We knew in advance that the the rooms were small, and they were. The bed is the main piece of furniture in the room, with little room to maneuver.

There are a bar and restaurant off the lobby, which allowed us to sit, drink, and play cards, as we watched the world go by outside. As former San Diegans we were amazed at the number of derelicts walking the streets. During all of our travels in Mexico and elsewhere, we never saw as many young low lifers or homeless as we saw here. While they never harassed us or anyone else, it was sad to see so many mentally ill persons.

We highly recommend this hotel and what goes on outside is not their concern. We still love San Diego and will always return.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the gym and the yoga room, which we had all to ourselves.

i stayed here over Valentines Day for my husband's and my anniversary and it was incredible. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, the valets were quick and very good about keeping you safe and getting your car quickly. If you needed it during the evening again, they would keep it close to the front to get it immediately. The Sofia was informed that our anniversary and was upgraded to a mini suite that was amazing. It has a living space, vanity space and bedroom that are all separate. Loved it. The bed was comfortable and the linens fresh, the shower and tub were clean and the towels were bath sheets not those short little cover barely bath towels. We were on the 6th floor and the room looked down onto the street and was very pretty to see at night when the city was lit up. The Currant restaurant was fabulous, it is definately $$$ pricing but worth the splurge. They had out Girl Scout cookies in the lobby and flavored water and everyone was super helpful navigating us and providing us with great ways to get around the city. I will stay there again and will send my clients there as well.

Room Tip: standard rooms are smaller, book a bigger room if you can

When you walk into the lobby of The Sofia Hotel, it brings to mind old world charm. The desk staff is very friendly and welcoming. Yes, the rooms are small - it is an older hotel - but they are very attractively appointed. The bed is super comfortable, the bathroom very modern, and there are nice little extra amenities--fridge, lighted mirror, free water, etc. The location is perfect - you can walk anywhere downtown, and there are tons of restaurants. This is my second stay at The Sofia, and I'd choose it again!

The only problem is the rooms are really small, but the staff are really friendly. It's also a good thing that it's near a convenient store.

My only concern is the size of the rooms, overall it's a comfy place to stay in.

Our first impression on the hotel was great. We were promptly greeted at the curb by a valet. He was very friendly and informative. They offer a text massaging service were you can text you are ready for your car and they will bring it around. The lobby was very clean and smelled good due to the restaurant that is attached. The front desk staff was very nice. The hotel over all is small but that is due to its age. The elevators cant ft more then 4 people if they also have luggage. The rooms/bathrooms are small. It was hard for 2 people to walk around the room at the same time without bumping into each other. Thankfully we didn't spend a lot of time in our room so that was fine. We were not able to locate the TV remote so we called the front desk and a new remote was brought to our room within minutes. There was a stain on the comforter so we just pushed it into the corner not knowing what the stain was. Not sure how the maid didn't see it. Also the door to our bathroom was broken but that was ok with us because the bathroom was so small you would get claustrophobic if the door was closed. Hotel is within walking distance to restaurants. And a quick drive to the convention center. For the price and location, we would probably stay here again.

We stayed here in September for our last 3 nights in the US. The hotel is perfectly located - near the Gaslamp Quarter etc but there was a lot of homeless people in the area.. We were greeted fine but I found that I had to ask them a lot of questions, a map for the city, attraction guide etc. The member of staff also took my credit card and didn't explain if they would take payment now or when we left. We had a twin room which was pretty small, the bathroom was pretty cramp too- however we were only staying for the 3nights so I didn't make any issue of this. We were up early for our flight home and I had to almost wake the reception staff up to check out and they didn't explain that they needed by credit card back and when I gave it again there was no explanation - again I had to ask them when they had taken the payment off my card...a bit off-putting for visitors. All in all a good, clean, modern hotel close to the city centre but staff could do with a bit of customer service training.
