“We lucked out at this beautiful hotel !!!!!!!!!!”
Reviewed March 27, 2010

We got a great rate on a room at this hotel through hotwire. After the booking when we received the name of the hotel, which was advertised on hotwire as 4.5 stars, we went to tripadvisor to read the reviews. We were pretty upset and disappointed to see all the negative reviews about the noise and the clubby atmosphere. But we went anyway, having paid our reservation in full, and hoped for the best. Well, we were pleasantly surprised and had an absolutely marvelous stay ! The hotel is beautiful and trendy and the staff is outstanding. Very impressive. At check in, knowing about the noise problem, we asked if they could put us in the quietest location possible. They graciously upgraded us to an executive king on the third floor, facing the street. We never heard any noise, all night long!!! Slept like babies. The room was beautifully furnished, the bed and linens were luxurious, and the mini bar was stocked with all kinds of wonderful things, some of which were complimentary. The giant tub was a treat too. If we knew we could get this room again, we would go back in a heartbeat. Not sure if we were just lucky, or if the hotel is making more of an effort to acomodate guests who like to sleep !!! All in all, we feel like we really lucked out with a great price for a beautiful hotel.

As already mentioned, problems with noise make Andaz a no go-er for most people travelling over a weekend. We had no issues with this except for Wednesday night, which was due to a nearby club rather than the hotel itself. Worth noting that we were on a room facing the street so I'm not sure if other rooms would prevent against this.
Pluses: location: easy walking distance into Gaslamp; lots of free snacks and drinks in the mini bar topped up daily; good bathroom (big bath) and size of room; nice pool and rooftop bar (which was virtually deserted when we went on a Monday); Free wireless; Everyone was helpful but it felt like there were a lot of staff with not much to do in the week.
Minuses: Clubby feel of the lobby not my idea of stylish, smells strongly of aftershave in the elevators!

If you know you're staying midweek and can get a get online deal as we did, then it's definitely a worthwhile Gaslamp option to consider. Otherwise you're probably better off elsewhere.

What a shame...a great restaurant and exceptional rooms are completely lost to the fact that this is not a hotel. It is a luxury youth hostel nightclub that anyone wishing to actually sleep will greatly regret. I ended up checking out of a very comfortable suite at 11:00PM and leaving to an inferior product at Se Hotel which was at the very least quiet. Go ahead...be lured in...but if the rooftop nightclub is open you will be subjected to a thumping bass drum of hell like you have never imagined. Don't believe this and all the other reviews here stating the same? Give it a go...if you are not driven crazy by the noise you are either deaf or 18.

Yes, we were warned, but this is basically 3 nightclubs with a hotel built around it. It's pretty noisy. If you're 21-25 and want to do nothing but party, good place to stay. Otherwise, it's loud and the rooms are Euro-styled, with a bath/shower in the middle of the room that leaks. Not an enjoyable stay.

Stayed at the Andaz (formerly the Ivy) for Valentines Day and had a wonderful time. I actually live in downtown SD anyway but wanted to have a little romantic getaway for Vday, even if only for the night.

We were lucky to get a hotwire rate of $113 per night, so i thought it was quite a steal. Hotel lobby is very chic and modern- my style, so i thought it was beautiful. Check in was no prob and they served complimentary Evian while I waited. Staff was very pleasant and courteous-- not like some of the reviews i had read on here.

Despite our lower rate we did not have a room facing the inside, but instead had a city facing view which i thought was great. As many reviews state, the rooms are pretty small, but given the decor and layout I found them to be very cozy-- great for a weekend or night of romance (all you need is a great bed, right?-- and the hotel did not dissapoint). They had great toiletries and robes as well as complimentary snacks and drinks (pretty rare for such a highly rated place). Definitely caters to adults as there is a "booty kit" with "intimate" items i found to be amusing :) At night you could slightly hear the music from the roof, but not bothersome at all as it didnt wake me from the little sleep i got anyway-- but i am a twenty-something (although not for long) :) Overall rooms were comfy, clean, and beautiful.

My favorite part of the stay, however, was the roof top pool. Great decor and great view-- plus its heated (although no jacuzzi) !Despite it being vday, a holiday weekend, and incredibly warm weather for february, it was virtually empty, so we felt like we had the area to ourselves. we ended up lounging around in the cabanas and pool beds even after we checkout. it was just very peaceful and romantic-- not as obnoxious and crowded as it typically was during the summer. Also-- awesome Kobe burger, but of course you'll pay 12 for it!

Overall, I highly reccommend. Probably not worth the regular rate since the rooms are small. But given what we paid and the fact that the rooftop was empty, couldnt really ask for more.

Unless you're coming here for an all-night rave/bachelor party the Anadz aka Ivy Hotel is a very bad choice.

We stayed here on Valentine's Day - well, I should say we TRIED to stay here. We ended up checking out at 9:30 PM because once the roof top club started up, we knew there was no romance or sleep happening for us. Fortunately we are locals and could just drive home but it was certainly disappointing/angering. The front desk took care of refunding our stay and parking fee right away and offered us free drinks at the bar (which we declined). So at least it was handled well. But her explanation of "this hotel offers a night-club feel" is a sad understatement of the truth: the hotel IS a night-club. Unless you don't plan to go to sleep until after 2 AM (and have $300 to spend on it), I'd strongly recommend staying elsewhere.

The decor is nice and location is great as are aspects of the service so that's why I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1. There is a bartender at the lounge bar (first floor) that I was very impressed with - his name is Chris, even if you're not staying at the hotel I'd go in and see him for a drink.

Also points off for a key-card fiasco at check-in that stranded many people trying to check in for hours (we didn't get into our room until 6 PM although we arrived at 3 PM, no offer to comp drinks, etc for that), and the fact that the pool/deck area on the roof which is one of the major perks of the hotel during the day allows SMOKING in all areas -- gross!
