“Consistently Great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

This was my third trip to Hillcrest House, and I continue to enjoy and appreciate it more each time. It feels like coming home now and I look forward to returning when I'm away. I have stayed in a different room each time, and each has been consistently interesting and restful. Breakfasts were a highlight as usual, I really enjoyed my long conversation with an art professor at the table on Saturday, as well as enjoyable chats with visitors from Canada and the Midwest on Sunday and Monday. Ann is always fun to talk with and makes everyone feel as if they are part of her extended family. Enjoyed walking in Hillcrest and Mission Hills also with the great variety of shopping and dining, parks, neighborhood architecture and gardens. A real San Diego destination in itself.

Room Tip: Book early, Hillcrest House is really popular with many repeat visitors!

We loved this B and B. The proprietor, Ann, is friendly and most helpful. Everything was clean and well cared for. This is a nice safe neighborhood — lively, but very quiet at night to sleep. The breakfast was fresh and delicious. We enjoyed being able to walk to nearby restaurants. We plan on returning and telling our friends about this charming B and B.

Room Tip: The Balboa Cottage rooms were lovely and quiet.

I very much enjoyed my stay at Hillcrest House B&B. The beds are out of this world and the rooms and bathrooms very clean and comfortable. The breakfast and gathering area promotes pleasant conversation with the innkeeper and other guests. I enjoyed this very much. The parking is very handy and the proximity (2 blocks!) to the shops and restaurants of Hillcrest is fantastic. There are great coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, interesting shops and bakeries and flower shops. You can take beautiful and interesting walks from here -- not far from Balboa Park either. I felt like I lived in Hillcrest and that was a real treat. Two grocery stores are very close, too. I will look forward to staying at Hillcrest House again soon.

Room Tip: Go for the Old Town Room if it's available!

We stayed in the Zoo Room. We found the Zoo Room quite comfortable. We were able to open the blinds and the windows each day. The neighbors were not interested in what we were doing. Their blinds were tipped so as to not look at us nor us look at them. My son was able to enjoy his cartoons, play thoughtfully with his toys in the common areas. We were delighted to be staying there. The t.v. does have a small screen; hopefully you are not there to watch t.v. If you need t.v. then this is not the place for you. We were able to walk, ride bikes and take a taxi which was a great reprieve from the car. We had our car and chose often to leave it. We had amazing hosts. We were able to ride our bikes in Balboa Park. We also enjoyed the museums as well as the neighborhood. We would recommend it as a delightful, cheerful and knowledgeable place to stay.

Room Tip: There is also a cottage if you need more privacy or space that is just as delightful.

A charming B&B situated in a charming neighborhood, a short drive from the center of town, yet with a character of its own. The house itself was very cozy, the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful, and the breakfasts were good, with fresh-baked muffins every morning. Met some nice people at breakfast and had some enjoyable conversation. Since I was on a business trip, I was pleased to have access to a common-room computer, wifi, and printer, but most of the other guests were on vacation, and the atmosphere was ideally suited to relaxation.

We spent a weekend at this B&B hoping it would become our new base camp when we're in San Diego. Unfortunately, we'll have to keep looking. This was the second B&B we've stayed at in San Diego.

First the pros: Within walking distance of some fantastic shops and restaurants in Hillcrest. Very congenial staff. Met some really nice guests and had a great time talking with them. Quiet neighborhood and parking in back, albeit tight. The bathroom in the Zoo Room was fairly spacious and the closet is in the bathroom, not in the bedroom.

And the cons: Breakfast offerings were only toast, fruit, a hard-boiled egg, and a yogurt cup. Yes, we understand what a continential breakfast is, but this was still the skimpiest breakfast at a B&B we've ever had. The Zoo Room bedroom was tiny as was the bed (full, not queen). We do like to unwind with a little television viewing at the end of our day, but our tv/dvd combo unit was so small we could barely see the screen (my laptop computer has twice the screen size). The view was non-existent and consisted of the wall of the neighboring house. And since the neighbors window looked in to our own, we kept the blinds down most of the time which meant no daylight in the room.

For $165 a night we expected much more. We'll be searching closer to the beach communities for a B&B in the future.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay with us. It takes time and effort to post, and we are appreciative. Your comments about our Great Location, is definitely a major draw, as we hear this from our guests alot. Hillcrest House is in the City Center of a hip, urban, historic neighborhood with lots to see and do, so if a view, or a big screen TV, is what you were hoping for, or expecting, I'm sorry there was none. Also I have to Fact Check a few other of your observations, to assist other travelers who want to be informed when making their travel decisions. All our guest rooms have Queen Beds, the items left out of the buffet breakfast description were: Home baked muffins, Bran and Granola Cereal, homemade jam, peanut butter, OJ, and Milk. Cheers, Ann

Words fail me. A lovely room, lovely bed, lovely sheets, lovely towels, lovely breakfast, lovely Ann to look after you. Great location in a quiet street in Hillcrest. There it is, you can't ask for more.
