My husband and I visited Hillcrest for 3 nights. The main house and guest cottage where we stayed were very homey and welcoming, decorated very tastefully (not a doily in sight!). The wall colors were soothing and warm, and the bed linens on the pillow-top bed were super soft and comfy. (If you need a firm mattress this may not be a good fit for you). The breakfasts were healthy and "self-serve" (more of a continental breakfast than a cooked meal). While there, we were able to walk to and from Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo ( which was fabulous), to the movie theater, and to just about any kind of restaurant we desired. If you do feel like a big breakfast, we discovered an amazing place called Hash House a GoGo on 5th Ave. that served the largest pancakes I have ever seen (the diameter of a pizza!). The Hillcrest neighborhood is hopping with a mulit-cultural, youngish vibe and seems to be very gay/lesbian-friendly. Thanks for a great time and all your help, Ann!

Location, warmth, hospitality, in-house concierge...you get it all at Hillcrest House! Before we even arrived, Ann the Innkeeper was in touch to be sure to greet us upon arrival. She made us feel welcomed and special by giving a thorough tour of the inn and property, along with helpful information and recommendations for restaurants and things to do in San Diego. Our room was clean,
comfortable, and quiet (first floor). Antique decor is cozy and very attractive. Breakfast was a delight with all the fresh fruit. Great coffee was available at all times. Ann's homemade jam was just perfect. Parking is easy and readily available. Every cuisine imaginable was within walking distance. We would definitely stay at the Hillcrest House again. Dog lovers beware: Callie will steal your heart!

We loved this house before we even entered. We felt as if we were coming home even though we'd never visited before. Once inside, we realized our instincts were correct when we met Ann, the inn keeper. She immediately put us at ease as she showed us around the house in general and our room specifically. She has created a very welcoming home and paid attention to the details to make it so. The breakfasts were "just right" in my opinion. Her fresh baked muffins coupled nicely with her home made fruit salad and various flavors of yogurt. Ann is also a font of information with regard to both points of interest around San Diego in general and restaurants in the immediate neighborhood. The house, though serene inside, is just a few blocks from a variety of restaurants that fit any budget. Be sure to ask, too, about the "jump on, jump off" bus that you can pick up in old town. We had only one full day in the city and this provided a great way to have our first experience with San Diego. Needless to say, we shall return. We look forward to being back in the house and sharing some good times with Ann and the other guests.

It feels like home here and will always keep coming back. Ann is a wonderful host and Shannon was very pleasant and sincere. Hope this place will always be available to us. Don't think I would want to stay anywhere else when visiting San Diego.

Room Tip: We have stayed in the Zoo room. It is quiet and roomy. Not sure about the other rooms but this one...

Hillcrest House B&B is a great place to stay in San Diego! Situated in the Hillcrest neighborhood, this house has a craftsman era feel to it with touches throughout that make you instantly feel at home. We stayed in the Zoo room while at Hillcrest & loved it. It was cozy, clean & stocked with all the amenities we needed. Innkeeper Ann made us feel right at home the minute we pulled into the driveway - she even waited for us past the normal check in time due to our flight delay! We really enjoyed all the helpful hints she had to offer & her warm nature made us feel very at ease - more like family than guests while we stayed there! Breakfast out on the front porch each morning was a real treat & the free parking behind the property was awesome! On top of all these great services, the location is amazing! Hillcrest House is centrally located & easy access to all the great attractions in San Diego. The best part, however, is that you don't have to stay "in" tourist central to experience all of these things. You get to stay in one of the city's hippest neighborhoods & feel like a local while there, but be very close to everything at the same time. Would definitely stay here again!

Thanks for the great review of Hillcrest House, and our eclectic, historic neighborhood. Hillcrest is where locals come do dine, and savor authentic, craft brewed beers. We look forward to your next visit to San Diego !

We usually stay in a big hotel when we travel to San Diego, but this year, we decided to stay at Ann's bed and breakfast. It was a very good decision! In the midst of a bustling city, Ann has created a quiet getaway, with all of the feeling of home. She provides a tasty and healthy breakfast, a quiet night's sleep, and lots of hints about where to go and where to eat. Her home is lovely, quiet, and comfortable. It is also located in a very nice neighborhood, safe and friendly to runners, and with lots of good restaurants within walking distance. I wish we had had more time to spend there, and we will definitely return.

Room Tip: We stayed in the cottage behind the main house, and it was very quiet.
