“Hospitality in the City”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

This is a great little hotel in the heart of Little Italy. The breakfasts are great. The staff is very helpful. It's almost like a bed and breakfast. Our flight from Florida was delayed so long that we missed our connection to San Diego, so we didn't arrive for the first night of our planned 3-night stay. Because I was in constant contact with hotel staff when it looked like we would be very late or not get there at all (we didn't), we were not charged for the night that we booked but missed. Very generous. I expected to have to pay regardless. Small outdoor seating area and indoor seating areas too. Walking distance from the water front and all of those delicious Italian restaurants. Would definitely stay there again!

We travel a lot - primarily to Europe - and I have never stayed in a hotel in the US that can live up to high German standards. Never...until now! The hotel is beautifully decorated, the rooms were clean, beds were comfortable, and the complimentary breakfast was top quality food and it hit the spot! They serve breakfast until 10 AM, which is so accommodating to us deep sleepers! The hotel is close to the airport and a freeway...but we did not feel ANY disturbances from these factors. The staff was helpful and friendly. We checked in during "happy hour" which included generous amounts of local craft beers, wines, and snacks. I lived in San Diego for 10 years and I felt like I was back home in this hotel. The location is ideal - We found a parking spot (free street parking only a block away), and we took a cab all around the city from the Gaslamp up to North Park... only $8 a trip! This charming boutique hotel delivers the experience of a 5 star hotel. You will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Our room was facing Grape street and we found it to be very quiet.

This was our second visit to Hotel Vyvant, the previous being last August. We came back because it was so perfect last time. Well, Perfect ... AGAIN for our spring break trip. Our room was clean, comfortable and just what we expected. We were in a deluxe queen room. We were on the courtyard side, so quieter and gathered the sun each day. Though the room was great, it was the staff that is amazing. We reconnected with Denise and Bekah, while getting to know Odette and Ashley. They were friendly, caring and always taking that extra effort to insure our stay was great. John, the owner came to meet and greet us. It is clear that all five of them care deeply about every customer. We highly recommend Hotel Vyvant, as we have book our next lodging already.

I stayed at this quaint hotel for two nights, since it was convenient to a temporary work assignment. What a great place! The room was perfect for a brief stay. My room faced Grape Street and the traffic noise was quite tolerable, with plenty of sunshine and fresh air too. There is a small courtyard area for quiet coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. The breakfast offerings are not plentiful, but excellent: Top notch homemade granola, wonderful bread and pastries, fruit, yogurt and truly fine coffee. The two staff folks I encountered were very courteous and helpful. The hotel is only a brief walk to the Little Italy neighborhood. I recommend Zia's Bistro and Bencotto Italian Kitchen. If your travels take you to San Diego and you'd like a boutique hotel experience, this is a fine choice!

My husband & I first stayed here the week that John bought the hotel. Even in that first stay, we could tell that staff would be a priority at this always more lovely boutique hotel. In successive stays we have seen the continuing improvements to the property but as from the
beginning, it is the staff that makes this the welcoming
home away from home in this wonderful location in Little Italy. To be fair, this is a "city" hotel. It is in a historic building in a vibrant neighborhood - there will be street noise and parking concerns. If you are willing to deal with both, you will truly enjoy a wonderful stay in one of San Diego's most delightful treasures.

Pros: Friendly, responsive staff who go the extra mile; location in Little Italy; comfortable, clean room; quality continental breakfast goodies from local merchants; personalized tips & restaurant recommendations included in rooms; good value for quality.
Cons: Street & freeway noise; location of shared bathroom; poor TV reception.
Advice: Request quiet room and pay extra for private bathroom.

Everyone was really nice but we did not have the greatest experience. First, we arrived late on a Friday night and spent almost an hour looking for parking which was impossible. I had two little ones who were exhausted. Ashly tried her best to be helpful but it did not help that parking was such a major issue. We got to our room which was the suite in the corner. It was really small. No room to move around with little kids. The entire hotel had a weird musty smell to it. The furniture was REALLY old and needed major updating. We walked by a few other rooms that seemed more updated but ours was semi-gross. Our bathroom had peeling and needed updates. Other cons included major noise. So much noise that we couldn't sleep and did not feel well rested at all. The bed was comfy, however. There were good things such as location, kitchenette, however the stress of parking and the lack of rest from the noise means I won't stay here again.

Room Tip: don't stay in the suite
