“A mans paradise”

My husband really enjoyed this. I liked the ship and aircraft. They give you a head phone set to wear which explains every site in detail. You pay for parking, you will probably need more than 1 hour.

“A very proud historical addition to San Diego~”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

f you're visiting San Diego don't miss the Midway, what an awesome experience this is. This Aircraft carrier was in use for 47 years and is now a museum. You enter this ship on the hanger deck and you are given your audio sets if you chose. You can take the stairs but there is also an elevator for those folks who aren't able to take the stairs easily.

You can tour any deck on the ship at your leisure. The exhibits and airplanes are all numbered just press those buttons on your audio headset to hear about that exhibit. There are also docents on board who have either served on the Midway or who have extensive knowledge of the workings of the carrier. Such a fascinating piece of history. You will spend several hours touring the ship if you want to see everything so plan accordingly.

There is a lovely cafe where you can sit outside and enjoy our beautiful San Diego weather and people watch. There is also a small gift shop which supports the USS Midway so do buy a little something if you can.

The most interesting thing to me is a story that one of the former employees told me. Because of the long history of the ship, the thousands of miles she has traveled across the globe and the tons of steel which make up the ship, it is supposedly very haunted. The employees tell stories in hushed voices and most of them will pooh pooh it out loud, but I was told some stories that had my hairs on the back of my neck standing straight up. Maybe you will get lucky and capture something on your camera.

The self guided audio tour was good but what we really loved was the first hand detailed walk throughs of aircraft take off and landing on board the carrier. These walk throughs were given by volunteer docents, many of whom actually served on the Midway.

Excellent tour guides - veterans were very knowledgeable about the ship and the activities that took place on the ship. The aircraft displays were very interesting.

“Huge floating museum”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

Great experience! They could use a little more signage in assisting the audio tour folks. They tell you where to go (in Navel terms) instead of arrows pointing the way when you get to the end of a segment. The information provided was more than adequate for all audiences. Great tour!
