Even being on the Mexican border, San Diego has few excellent Mexican restaurants and even fewer that the whole family can enjoy. Casa Guadalajara fills the bill for any festive occasion. Wait lines can be avoided if you are not particular where you are seated, i.e., out-of-doors on the patio, the dining room or bar area. All are equally interesting. Also arriving before the crowds, such as 11:30 am instead of noon can reduce the wait.

Their menu is extensive and reminiscent of the items at restaurants in Mexico City. They are well-prepared and the large plates are overflowing. Choices range from Enchilladas Suisse to
Baja Fish Tachos. There is something on the menu for everyone's taste. Appetizers and desserts are also tasty, if you can find room. Margaritas are the drink of multiple choices.

On weekends there are usually strolling guitarists singing to the restaurant guests. The décor is wildly bright and truly representative of Mexican artistry. Additionally the restaurant is situated near the Bazaar del Mundo shopping area of Old Town. There's plenty to entertain after a great meal. This is a place the whole family and any guests will love.

This was our favorite meal on our San Diego trip! We went at lunch and were seated right away inside (patio fills up quickly). We ordered our food and had it in 10 mintues! Super fast service. And the food was wonderful...we recommend!!

This place is so good. The food is fresh and Lots of it . A Great,Value. It was a bit loud . Hard to hear if the Mariachi Band was close by. Service was great I had so much food I had to take some home. Nice Friendly , Place with Great food. Just too loud to really be able to enjoy conversation with friends

We ate outside right by the fountain, which was gorgeous. They had a great selection of margaritas, and as an inveterate "plate raider," I can say that all 4 entrees at the table were delicious. They had a lot of old favorites, but also some unusual ones like pumpkin seed green mole (which I really enjoyed). The friend who brought me there is a local and she can't get enough of their carnitas - orders it every time she goes. There are a few dishes that taste very similar to the way her late father and grandmother used to make them, so the food there "tastes like love" as far as she's concerned.

Definitely ask for flour tortillas - they make them on-site and they're wonderful (helpful hint: keep them tucked in their foil packet as you eat so they stay warm. They're not quite as good once they cool). Portion size is pretty huge, so come hungry. We ate far too much but couldn't help ourselves.

The mariachi band was a great touch, too (don't forget a generous tip if you request a song).

Our party of 5 included our niece, who is three years old, and she was pretty restless. The servers were incredibly indulgent of her need to be up and moving around, but out of respect for other diners I've rated the place "just ok" for families with kids because her preschooler antics were out of place there. It's not the kind of restaurant where they hand your kid some crayons with their menu. But they have a kid's menu, and for kids who are a little older (5 and up?) and able to sit still through a meal and keep their voices down, I think it would be a super fun outing.

There is usually a wait for Casa Guadalajara, but we were not anticipating a 45 minute wait on a Wednesday evening. The food is varied and good "rice and beans Mexican" with some added interest. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals. The service is always a little bit lackluster. Old Town is a touristy area and it seems the wait staff feels they don't have to try very hard. If you have time before or after your meal, check out Old Town which is an easy walk around the corner from the restaurant.
