The Rei Do Gado was the best Brazilian Steakhouse I've ever been to. We celebrated my husbands birthday with18 other friends. The food was excellent. They had 20 different selections of meat and a wonderful salad bar and seafood bar. The meat was all cooked to perfection and very juicy. The ambiance in the restaurant is very nice. The piano player was Great. I can't even tell you how Great our service was. They went above and beyond in making this day special. I'd like to especially thank Tenera our waitress and Young the manager for making our evening so enjoyable. We will definitely be back. Thanks again.

“Very filling...hope you like beef”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2014 via mobile

Great atmosphere and the piano guy is great. A wide selection of salads and sides available from the buffet and the meats when served are wonderful! Although, I hope you like beef, beef, and more beef! Sure they provide about 17 different meats but about 12 are beef. More variety would have been appreciated. At the pricey end...dinner for five with minimal drinks and no desserts about $400. High mark ups on wines.

“An average "churrascaria"”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2014 via mobile

Plane and simple this is your average "swords" restaurant.

It has good ambiance, good and kind service, enough quality on the meat but salad bar definitely needs improvement

The "picanha" (top sirloin) is usually the best choice and in this case does not disappoints

It was somehow surprising that there was just one guy serving with the swords for ALL the restaurant. This made service a bit slow, nevertheless as I mentioned before it was kind.

Nothing really wrong
Nothing really outstanding
Just normal

“Brazilian Flare Brought to Downtown San Diego”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2014

The Rei Do Gado is right in the heart of the Gaslamp quarter of SD, there is limited parking outside (valet service offered) but a short walk is the Westfield shopping centre and it's large car park, which is where we left the car. We were brought here by a friend who lives in the SoCal area, he neither had tried this place but had heard good things about this restaurant.

The inside furnishing are styled in a art deco, speakeasy style with dark woods, mood lighting, mirror lined bar area and green leather chairs and benches, which almost seem at a juxtaposition to the Brazilian flare. Both the greeter and drinks servers wore clothing that would almost be considering too raunchy for Rio beach! leaving little to the imagination.....this is not a criticism.

As most Churrasco restaurants, the concept is the same. here side dishes are buffet style, a large choice of salads, large prawns (shrimp) with a fantastic santa rosa sauce I might add, cold sides and some warm ones such as sauteed potatoes. The vast choice of side dishes makes it good for veggies! But it hard to say which is good or bad and if you tried to eat it all you'd be full before the only reason why you really visit the place.....the meat !!

The meat is brought out mostly on skewers, some pre sliced on wooden trays. As per form you have a dual colored chess piece affair, one half is red (don't serve me meat) the other half is green (keep serving me meet) My tip....make sure you have the green one facing up! if you dont sound the like of what he serves just politely decline. The passadors wear gaucho style costumes and walk around with their skewers, over 30 meats are continually served in succession, with usually 2 or 3 passadors serving different meats, to eat all the meats on offer would take the patience and stomach to withstand it !

Generally speaking the meat was excellent, one particular cut of beef, sirloin style,it was superb. With a buttery texture, meat which almost melted and a seasoning which just finished it off to a T. The vast range of meets just makes it hard to remember which was which. In total I had about 15 or so meats and I cant say any were bad. The sausage served was somewhat average compared to most craft sausages served in the UK but a lot better than all served in the U.S. I just didn't have room for dessert, but the Brazilian cocktail waitress (again barely dressed) served (or sold I say sold us!) a Caipirinha cocktail, which was sweet enough to satisfy any sweet tooth but gave the sour edge to help round off a meal.

Overall the staff help create an atmosphere, most of them appear to be Brazilian and do their best for you, later on a Carnival dancer, in full bikini and head gear comes out to perform samba dancing around the tables, again reactions to her can be funny as some embrace, her almost joining in and other shy away in embarrassment !

Overall this is not the sort of place to be hyper detailed about the food offered, none of the food is bad and some of the meat is fantastic. It's the sort of place to bring a load of friends, an appetite, have a few drinks and enjoy the evening. I think Rei Do Gado delivers that with staff who can have some fun, some strong drinks to put down your throat and some fantastic meat for you to enjoy again and again if you so wish ! I would visit Rei Do Gado again when I'm back in SD.
