The Antique Row Cafe has to rate as one of the best, down home diners in San Diego. There is nothing fancy about it, just heaps of good American comfort food.

I tend to order off the daily specials board, but when I want a great chicken fried steak, this is my go to place.

We eat here on average about once a week. We started sometime in 2001. My suggestion is to avoid the weekend crowd. It is just too crowded and the wait is too long. Go there on a weekday morning for breakfast or right after lunch. They open at 6 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. A good time to go is 1 p.m. because the lunch rush is winding down and things are more relaxed. This summer (2007) they are also open until 9 p.m. for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings only. The owner is Mario Lopez (not the actor) and he is very friendly. If you have any problem with your food or service, speak up about it. They have always responded to us whenever something wasn't quite right. Their best potato dish is the Monterey Potato Cake. They make a good Eggs Benedict or Eggs Florentine (spinach instead of the ham). Every day the soup is Vegetable Beef plus one other that changes daily. Often on Thursday it is Cream of Broccoli, which is their best soup. But sometimes they have a "Poor Man's Soup" which is kind of like Minestrone, with pasta and ground beef, but not that great. The Vegetable Beef that they have every day is kind of drab. Their best salad is the Chicken Teriaki Salad. Their club sandwich is good, but make sure to ask them to cut into 4, not 2 because if it is cut in 2, it is too big to pick up. They always have the regular club and the vegetarian club. Both are good. Once in a while they have the Chicken Club as a daily special and it is outstanding. The omelets are large and the Popeye Omelette is good, with spinach, broccoli, asparagus, avocado and plenty of cheese. They make good milk shakes and a banana shake. They have improved their dessert selection a lot. They are now open until 9 p.m. for dinner on Monday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday they stay open only until 3 p.m.

Not usually worth the long, long lines. Nonetheless, the breakfast potatoes are delicious, the portions are huge and the food is usually pretty good. Unforunately, had bad service there today... the server forgot to bring the coffee, which is hard to forgive on a Sunday morning, and she was much overworked and didn't have a lot of extra time for us. If you can ever find a time when this place isn't packed, it is a much better experience.

Not the best food, but it's always pretty good... with quick service... and fun atmosphere. Sometimes, consistency is king.
