Sushi Ota is on par with many leading sushi restaurants in the US, such as Sushi Gen in LA, Shiro's in Seattle, and Sushi Ran in Sausalito. My family and I were fortunate to get in at 530 without a reservation on a Saturday night, but I wouldn't risk it normally (we think the rain kept people away). It was a great sight to see so many Japanese tourists and expats dining there. While the prices of many items could bust your budget, the Sushi and Sashimi special platters were a great value, including many higher-end selections. Service was also suprisingly attentive for such a busy establishment. We will be back!!

Sushi Ota definitely served the best sushi we have ever had. The salmon belly, sea urchin and eel sushi topped our list. The Japanese chefs were so friendly and our hot tea was refilled promptly by our waitress. We are already planning our next trip to San Diego with this restaurant mind.

We always enjoy coming here as we believe this is Tokyo quality sushi. it tastes fresher, they have live food if one wants it, and creative combinations. Food is always beautifully prepared and restaurant is packed but never too loud. In an unassuming strip mall one would never imagine this gem there. We have have tried their even pricier place over by Balboa park and while good it does not offer the value for the money and is too yuppified for us. With traffic patterns in the area we usually eat here on wee-ends. One of the few places we give five stars.

Sushi Ota is a place where you can get your normal run of the mill stuff. It's also a place where ou can get some pretty awesome creations and food.

The service: overall it's very good. I suggest you make a reservation. I went there at 17:30 on a weeknight with a reservation and there was a line at the door. By the time I left 1.5 hours later, the restaurant was packed with a line outside. Our waitress Amber was fantastic.

Parking: the lot is very small. Park on the street if you can.

The food: WOW! This was some of the best fish I've ever had, and that includes sushi places in Japan, San Francisco and New York. You will not be disappointed.

The price: The prices are fair to competitive. They do not gouge but they are also not cheap. We spent $125 on two people after tax/tip. We had about 30-35 pieces total.

Summary: Go there. You you'll be happy you did.

Best to make a reservation at Sushi Ota as not only do the locals eat there, but people from Japan go and eat there! It sits quietly in the back of a 7-11 strip mall, but let me tell you..this IS chopstix down the best and most authentic sushi Ive EVER had..and I am 55 from Kona! Good Sake list, freshest of the freshest of fish and a great show at the sushi bar, specially if Mr. Ota is there! Can accommodate large groups in dining area, but make a reservation..plan on staying a while..enjoy! Make sure you ask for "Golden Eye"!!
