We walked in and thought we were entering a sit down, fully served restaurant. This wasn’t the case, you go up to the counter and order and then find a place to sit. I find that usually these type of restaurants lack service. But the staff was friendly and helped out with drinks to the table. The food was great, portions were too large and we didn’t realize so we ordered way too much. All and all great place, for all ages.

Went here on a recommendation of a friend. We were headed for another spot that we always visit when we come to San Diego, but decided to try this spot. What a great choice we made. Are we fans? Yes!! The only issue (and reason for only 4 stars), was the lack of customer service. One issue was the rudeness of the bus people, pushing their way through the line to clear dishes. A simple excuse me would be in order. The other issue was that when we sat down, a server introduced himself and said he would be helping us. To our surprise, he never returned. We pretty much got whatever we needed by ourselves. But to be fair, that's what this restaurant looks like...help yourself to whatever you need.

As far as the food? Outstanding! We had the Pulled Pork Sandwich, Ribs and Chicken X2, and Ribs. We also had fries, cole slaw, and BBQ beans. Tasted great, served quickly, and lots to drink. Total bill was about $50, and for what we had, well worth it.

Would definitely return, and recommend. Thanks Tony for pointing us here!

Been here many times while in San Diego. Seems as they have grown the food has slipped. The ribs were fair no real smoke flavor and the onion rings and fries were very greasy .Sorry to report Phil's is off our list after many years satisfied customers.the only bright side was CJ was still there and still great

GPS took us to a location next to the Sports Arean. Don’t panic. That’s only a short distance from where the real location is. We went at 11 AM when it opens & there were no lines, maybe 3 people in front of us. First time ever, that I’ve come when there’s no line! As usual, it was worth it. I ordered chicken & ribs & boxed up the ribs to go which were still yummy a few hours later.

We always try regional BBQ's when we travel. But BBQ in San Diego, we've tried that our last trip 6yrs ago and the sampling was not very good. Lets just say Phil's fills the ticket as good BBQ. We had the full baby back slab order with fries. The ribs had a good flavor but a little dry and tough. Based on other reviews, I'll attribute the dryness to being after 8pm on a Sunday night. We asked for the sauce on the side but they came sauced. There was a lot of fries, plenty for the two of us. We didn't have a wait, but had issues with finding a clean table. For San Diego BBQ I can see how they are doing so well, they are the best we've had when visiting SD. Phil knows his rub with his wood blend good job.
