Description: For the past 17 years, BBQ lovers across San Diego County have turned to restaurateur Phil Pace to satisfy a singular craving: mesquite-grilled baby back ribs, beef ribs, chicken and sandwiches. Serving thousands of customers a day from a diverse clientele of skateboarders to Bentleys, Phil has built his foundation on consistency, quality, freshness, and friendly service. "We thrive on providing each guest with the 'Phil's Experience', which basically comes down to organized chaos," laughs owner Phil Pace. "The biggest reason behind our success is our loyal customers who have supported us and waited in line for a taste of BBQ for the past fifteen years. "Since opening its doors in San Diego in 1998, Phil's BBQ has served over one million pounds of BBQ sauce (enough to fill Shamu's tank).

“Finger licking good!”
Reviewed May 13, 2014

Due to moving out of town, the last time I was at Phil's was when they were at the small Mission Hills location. I was looking forward to it and was pleased with the large Sports Arena location that also had a bar on the side. Plenty of space for big parties and the many people that come through the door. We ordered the BEEF ribs and baby back ribs as well as many sides. I recommend both and the ribs have a ton of meat on the bones. I have heard good things about the tri-tip too but this was a rib visit. The manager helped us order the right amount of food and ensured we were happy through our visit! Don't forget to grab the rub and BBQ sauce to go, they sell it so you can enjoy it at home! I can't wait for my next visit, please come to Northern California!

“Go early but worth the wait”
Reviewed May 13, 2014

Went to Phil's while in San Diego based on reviews and was not disappointed. Pork Ribs were really good, baked beans good, fries ok, coleslaw good. We went right before they opened at 11:00 so no waiting, but well worth it!!!

“Best BBQ I have ever had”
Reviewed May 12, 2014

This restaurant along with its 1-hour-or-more wait, is well worth it. The BBQ pork is spectacular, the meat just falls of the bone, very tender and tasty. The sauce is also excellent: not too sweet but full of flavor. I recommend pork ribs over beef. The fries are average, the coleslaw is very good and the corn on the cob is excellent.

The most important tip I can give you is: if your party is small (4 or less) skip the line and go straight to the bar where you can eat all the same without having to wait for an hour or have it go. Alternatively, you can try the one is Santee, which is a 20-25 minute drive from this spot, but it might be closer to your location, and the wait is little to nothing there.

“Mmmm Mmmm BBQ”

Even at 3 in the afternoon, the line was out the door. What a great taste, service and almost a destination. Recommended by family and we loved it.
