Sat outside on a bustling Friday evening and enjoyed the food, service and scene on the sidewalk. We had a great waiter that gave good recommendations. The rigatoni with filet mignon strips was wonderful. It seemed like an odd combo but flavor blending and sauce were great. Pasta with sun dried tomatoes, chicken in a light cream red sauce also very good. Wine may be a little overpriced but good selection. Overall a decent experience but may be few dollars high. Noticed no problems with the hostel next door as someone else had mentioned; nice people coming in and out.

Sweet, street side cafe with outdoor area or elegant indoor seating. Excellent authentic Italian dishes with very good wine and beer selection. Great service.

Service was good for us, but appeared to be iffy at other tables. My son had linguini and clams and reports they were excellent. I had the lasagna bolognese, which was very good. The Caesar salad was unimpressive and large enough to share. Location is perfect for walking and exploring the Gaslamp District.

We chose to dine at Asti on the basis it looked like a fun place to go to. It is a bright, busy spot in the heart of the Gaslamp District with a distinct feel of a traditional Italian trattoria.

Asti is a great spot for a late dinner (we didn't arrive until after 10:00pm on a Friday night). The menu is enormous offering something for everyone. There is a secondary menu containing the house specialties - my beef is that it not show any prices. Notwithstanding this, I ordered the grilled calamari and the seafood platter from this menu (which had by far the more interesting selections).

The service was efficient and I got the sense that the waitstaff had been working in the restaurant for many years (a good sign).

Asti is a good bet for a decent meal in the Gaslamp area.

We had a terrific dinner at Asti, followed by a terrific lunch the following day. Despite working a number of tables in a packed outdoor area, our waiter remembered us when we returned, and knew exactly what our wine preferences were. His recommendations were always spot-on, and he wasn't afraid to steer you away from something that wasn't quite as good as another item. This is Northern Italian cooking, and the pasta is all homemade. The swordfish was incredibly fresh and well seasoned, served with a beautiful accompaniment of vegetables and roasted potatoes. For lunch, we each tried a pasta dish, and I gotta tell you, the pasta topped with grilled sirloin strips was a knockout. The tiramisu, made fresh daily, I'd also highly recommend. Our waiter and the support team were pro's, not students out of school for the summer, and the service was excellent at both meals. The main room is all exposed brick, crisp white table cloths, and dark wood accents, set in restored turn-of-the-century architecture. Loved it, but because the place is small, the tables are really packed in, so be prepared to get very cozy with your fellow diners.

We ate in the outdoor area, which is right on the street. The Gaslamp Quarter setting is both a blessing and a curse, for while there is architectural charm for days, some of the gritty urban trappings remain from the bad old days of this formerly run-down area. The sidewalks are jammed with tourists, and not a few homeless people. During the day, it is expected that the attractive hostess also stands out on the sidewalk and hawks the menu, trying to lure in tourists. Most of the places in the Quarter do this, so I get the competitive necessity, but it is a little distracting. All in all, the Quarter is much like a grittier North Beach. So the passing parade is fun in the near-perfect San Diego climate, but occasionally a little more than you want in the midst of a fine meal. The pricing is pretty much in line with places of this quality, no sticker shock. The menu and wine list are extensive. Enjoy!
