This little restaurant made us feel that we are eating at the host's home. The food was good. The ambience relaxed. The Latin American style was a nice break from the surrounding beer swelling chip factories with questionable seafoods. We went as a large group of eight people and enjoyed it.

“Authentic and cozy”

We read about Berta's in Frommer's San Diego guide and decided to give it a try. We ignored the grouchy reviews, and SO glad we did. Our server was great and the food was even better! Delicious lemon cheesecake, carne a la parrilla, and Venezuelan paballon. Really glad we found this local-owned restaurant!

“Not worth returning”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2012

We came to this restaurant for 2 reasons - great reviews from a couple of Latin American ladies and a Restaurant.com certificate.

Service: We came for a mid-afternoon meal at about 2:30pm. We were the only customers. Initially we walked in and were greeted promptly and were asked if we'd prefer inside our outside dining. As other reviews stated, the inside was pretty uninspiring, so we chose outside. Our beautiful San Diego weather was at it's best that day - perfect temperature, perfect light breeze. The weather was the highlight. After being greeted and being the only guests, we ended up waiting a looooong time for any service. The whole experience was incredibly slow.

The setting: This restaurant has the unfortunate privilege to be on a side street that dead-ends into Rockin Baja Lobster. The only table large enough to seat 3 people on the patio is basically shoved into a corner and practically IN the Rockin parking lot. The table and chairs were cheap plastic home-patio-esque. There is no people watching in this location, making service seem slower. There were many flies, which we don't blame the restaurant for, just a little annoying. The flies didn't seem interested in our food anyway. I didn't venture inside at all, but on a trip to use the restroom, one member of our party peeked into the kitchen. He said I may have walked out before eating if I had seen it!

The menu: Ordering was kind of fun - you get to choose Argentinian-this or Colombian-that. The menu has seafood, vegetarian, and vegan labels, which was nice. Vegetarian options looked very potato-heavy.

The food: My husband had a beefy stew and my bro-in-law had a the lamb kabob. Both of those dishes were served a with a great looking, green salad. I ordered the Colombian fish of the day, which was red snapper. The presentation of the fish was terrible - swimming in yellow liquid (though not buttery or greasy), with cole slaw on top of it, with an ugly pile of whitish rice on the side. No salad with the fish. All that being said, we all thought our meals were tasty (though lacking salt) and none of us got food poisoning, so yay us!

“Berta's is the best restaurant in Old Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2012 via mobile

Latin American cuisine. A sampling from all countries. Went back a few nights during my stay in San Diego. Nice atmosphere. Prices reasonable. Around $16 - 20 a plate. The owner does the cooking waitress was great. Loved Old town a taste of Mexico without going to dangerous Tijuana

“Fabulous selection of authentic Latin American cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2012

I love this restaurant. I have been many times. It is located in Old Town but it is not the run of the mills mediocre Mexican restaurant. Berta's offers a wide variety of plates from many Latin American countries as well as from Jamaica and Spain. I have eaten most of the dishes and they are well prepared and well priced.
