The course was in good shape, a decent enough layout...pretty tight so being accurate will save a lot of balls. A few hokey holes, a few really good ones, altogether a fun little track for $40. Too bad so many of the employees don't realize what an awesome job they have.

The attitude of most of the customer-facing employees I ran into was barely tolerant at best. It certainly felt like as a paying customer I was not respected at all, but rather an interruption in the easiest job anyone could imagine. Seriously, pro-shop dude with the salary and benefits of a government employee is a dream job for the lazy...at least put a smile on your face and appreciate how easy you've got it instead of being so rude and ignorant. The starter was only minimally less unpleasant than the pro shop guy. Wake up! You work at a golf course! You're not stuck in a cubicle in an office all day every day...you get to meet all kinds of people and be around something people are passionate about! Jeez, you could be stamping passports or processing papers all day.

The snack bar lady was a little more pleasant but the eye-roll wasn't what I was expecting when I paid for my over priced and watered down fountain soda with a $20.00 bill. Is that why it took 5 minutes to get change? How can you not have change for a twenty in the middle of the afternoon?

The outdoor maintenance crew were friendly and considerate of the golfers....polite, pleasant, smiled, waved, showed respect for the people playing, and they were working....they were everything you would want at a public or private course....good on you guys! You were the opposite of the customer-facing people. Maybe you should all have the labor-free front office jobs and make the others break a sweat for once so they can appreciate what it's like to work.

I had four different experiences with the outdoor crew and every single one of them was awesome! With the indoor staff...horrible with the pro shop guy, less than horrible but still not reaching the level of acceptable experience with the starter, and barely acceptable but not an enviable experience with cafe lady. So by the numbers more good than bad, but by the experience, the San Diego parks department needs to do far better training and bring in employees who can deliver a positive customer experience. It was my only negative experience in an entire week in San Diego. Such a shame that government employees of all people can leave such a bad taste in a tourist's mouth.

A beautiful municipal golf course just northeast of the downtown area of San Diego. Rates for non-residents on a weekend were $50 for 18 holes. Power cart was $15 per person.
Course was in mint condition - fairways were neatly trimmed, but well watered; greens were a little fast by the end of the day, but cut well, clean and smooth. The trick with this course is that while it plays just over 7000 yards (blue tees), it walks about 9000 yards because this baby is HILLY!! A power cart is recommended if you have any kind of issues that would limit your amount of walking!
Watch out for the Starter (er...Drill Sargent)! He doesn't want you to either pay your green fees or pick up your cart until 3 minutes before your tee time!! A little much, but he spends a LOT of time locked up in his little plexi-glass cage, so....
The course has a nice mid-way snack bar/bathroom at the 9th hole, but bring plenty of cash and I hope you like carbs (cookies, muffins, candy, pretzels, hot dogs ($4.50!!?) and beer)! But, the beer is really cold and tasted really good (even at 11:30am)!
The scenery along the way is really impressive - even being in downtown San Diego. One minor distraction comes from a commercial jet landing at the San Diego Airport every 2-3 minutes almost all day long! After a while, you can tune it out, but just be prepared.
Played with 3 locals who helped with tips and advice from hole to hole - which helped a great deal! Enjoy!

We travel to San Diego once a year and bring our golf clubs. This is the first year we played Balboa - WHAT A TREAT! The cost was very reasonable and the course was exceptional. We find this course to be the most fun of any course that we have played in SD so far. The course has well maintained fareways and greens. It also has great views from the higher holes. It's a course that isn't easily walked because of the hills but it is the hills that make this such a fun course. Many of the greens are either lower or higher in elavation than the tees. Many of the fareways are narrow with roughs that don't offer a chance of finding an errant hit. We love this course! This course will be on our list to play again next year.

Good course design with plenty of challenges. Some nice views when up high on the ridge. Greens were pretty good, fairways just OK. Good value for money.
