The omelettes here were amazing as was the service. I ate here 4 mornings and sampled different items each morning. The Tiramisu pancakes were so beautiful, I took a picture of them so people would believe me. Everything I had there was excellent. People were friendly. Coffee was delicious and strong. This restaurant will start your day off right!

This restaurant was so good we went back the next day for brunch. The fact that people wait for a table for 15-25 minutes while the two surrounding restaurants are nearly empty in the late morning is not surprising once you eat here.
The staff works as a team so service is attentive (and very friendly). The food tastes great (try the salmon diamonds!) and is beautifully presented. Their Tomatillo Bloody Mary is stuffed with a small snack on skewers, and the six varieties of Sangria--at least the three we tried--are perfect with brunch (especially the strawberry-and-basil).
You really can't go wrong with anything you order here, at least from the looks of the various dishes we spied on other tables.
If we had known how good this place was the first night we were in the Gaslamp District, we would have eaten here a third time instead of the so-so dinner we had at Bandar.

Two things make this place so special: the food and the service. It's a pleasant enough setting but what makes it stand out among the many other places in San Diego's Gaslamp district is the friendliness of its servers and the consistent high-quality dishes. We were there initially for lunch and had a great meal but seeing some of the breakfast/brunch dishes that kept coming out of the kitchen to nearby tables we had to return again for breakfast early on Sunday morning. We were not disappointed the second time around. Staff remembered us from before and acted like they were genuinely happy to see us back again and made us feel more than welcome. The menu is eclectic and fun...lots of interesting things to try (like 'pretentious' bacon)...although we aren't alcohol consumers, some of the drinks coming out of the bar looked fabulous... exuberant creations that delighted the eye as well as taste, I would imagine. Well worth a visit and Café 21 definitely stands out among the vibrant competition. We intend to visit their second location in another of San Diego neighborhood soon.

This restaurant in the Gaslamp District of San Diego stands out among the many eateries along Fifth Avenue. The food is excellent, the ambiance is pleasant, and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I had dinner at Cafe 21 three times during a week spent on business in San Diego; once with a small group (6), once with a large group (20, quite a challenge!), and once by myself, and every time I had a most pleasant experience. The place is not too large, the ambiance is friendly, and the noise level is just right. The menu offers mostly local selections, with some very tasty appetizers. I recommend the grilled sea bass for fish aficionados and duck breast for the meat eaters. There is a nice selection of good wines at moderate prices. Highly recommended!
