Island Charters was neither my first, nor second, choice to go on a return white shark diving in Guadalupe, but they had an last minute opening. The other operators did not. Now I have a idea why.

Though we saw some sharks, this mainly occurred during a few minutes during each of the 3-4 daily 60 minute dives when all we saw was...nothing. This was frustrating because the sharks were clearly around and immediately rose to the cages when fresh baits, especially tuna oil and blood, were released into the water. Unfortunately, the crew was mostly unprepared to do this and unless they hand lined a tuna as they did on several occasions, we wasted our time in the cages. On other Guadalupe trips the sharks stayed in close and nosed the cages continuously. That’s what everyone wanted! Never happened with Island Charters.

Another thing: the cages were all placed at the surface so the sharks had to come all the way up to be seen. Though they had a submersible on this trip, divers were lucky to get one, 20 minute immersion at 20 feet. This is the depth where we should have spent our time in properly baited cages. Very disappointing.

Lastly the guy who gave divers the regulator before entering the cage, “Doc”, was very preoccupied with maintaining a strict schedule and clueless about customer service. On one unproductive hour long dive, the sharks only appeared as I was leaving the cage and had already handed him the reg. He wouldn’t give it back to me because “time was up”. The ownership of this company needs a better suited person to interact with its clients.

On the positive, the crew was friendly and the food excellent. The lady who ran the kitchen by herself did an unbelievable job of cooking for 15 people and everything was delicious. Also when we needed earplugs to drown out the growling engine next to our room, they quickly responded. Excellent guys, all of them.

I can’t recommend a trip with Island Charters. Despite the excellent food and nice crew, they couldn’t deliver the sharks. Guadalupe Island is the best place in the world to see these magnificent animals and my previous two trips were great! Live and learn.

We are so sorry to learn you had an unfavorable experience on one of our trips. It is very nice to hear our crew did a good job with the exception of one subcontractor we used who was not an employee. He does not contract for us anymore. As for the lack of sharks being close to the cage, we wish we could give an explanation for that. Going back a couple years to try and figure out the problem would be impossible at this point, so all we can do is apologize. We would like to correct this as best we can at this late date. Please send an email to info@islander-charters.com and we can private message to try to resolve to your satisfaction. Regards, Islander Charters, Inc.

My boyfriend and I have been scuba diving for several years, and to dive with great white sharks was always something we had wanted to do. We did our research, and we kept coming up with this company. They have a 100% safety record and guarantee their passengers will see a shark. We were not disappointed! Not only did we see a shark on that trip, but we saw at least one every time we went down! They have two cages with surface-supplied air, so anyone can go, not just scuba-certified people. They have 1 drop down cage with room for 1 diver plus their dive master. This goes down about 40 feet and gives you the chance for some really cool pictures underneath the sharks! They were very stict about safety (for example, no entering the water if you've had any alcohol that day!). The staff to passenger ratio was amazing; we always had someone nearby to ask questions or get help. We really recommend you bring your laptop, as at the end of our trip, we had someone in the group with a hard drive who downloaded everyone's pictures and then uploaded them onto all our computers. Bring a good underwater camera, but a flash is really not needed; I never used my flash and got many great pix. The food is incredible, and the chef on board, Rick, really wants to please everyone. He posts a menu daily, and you can ask for something else if you don't care for what he is serving. He makes awesome snacks you can eat every time you get out of the water! Be aware that the bedroom situation is not like a hotel...just like a cruise ship, with a teeny sink and teeny bunkbed and just enough room for 1 or 2 people to stand in place! There are two full bathrooms on board for all to share; they have handles all over the place in case it is wavy! Be sure to bring your own towel or 2; the rooms are below and very damp. The company also offers fishing trips, or you can create your own type of excursion. I would go again, but have other things on the bucket list that need crossing off as well!
