We tried Barrio Star after our friends raved about it. Unfortunately, we didn't feel the same way. The waiter bragged about the margaritas - we found them to be very weak and not particularly spectacular. Food was very average - not much spice and not much flavor. The service was what was really terrible though. The waiter brought out our appetizer and entrees at the same time and shrugged apologetically. Halfway through dinner, he reappeared to announce that he had been cut for the evening and would we mind settling our bill? Overall, we felt like they were trying to get us out the door from the minute we sat down. Not worth the visit, particularly when there are so many better places to find Mexican food in San Diego.

We were afraid with the tagline "soul food" it would be heavy and siesta-inducing. But our meal was right-size portions, clean and light. We shared a breakfast item (avocado scramble) and a lunch item (fish tacos) and got the guadalajara corn to start. Everything was fabulous! The fish tacos were our favorite; they were perfectly done. The avocado inside the omelet was so fresh and flavorful. And they have delicious coffee. Great service start to finish. Will definitely visit again!

I really enjoyed this place. The food is quite tasty. Good quality and well presented. Free chips and dips provided and I had a selection of the happy hour smaller items and was stuffed! Margarita was nice, slightly too sweet for my taste but still enjoyed it. The micheladas were also very nice. Good place to catch up with friends and the staff are very friendly.

Barrio star is the third restaurant of Isabel Cruz in the San Diego area. She started with Isabels Cantina in Pacific Beach, then she opened Coffee Cup, and recently Barrio Star in Bankers Hill. This has been one of our go to restaurants for awhile now, great food, fresh ingredients, and reasonably priced. We always start with something, the plantains' with chipotle cream are really good and the chips, salsa and guacamole too. This time though we tried their BARRIO ROMAINE SALAD and I will definitely order it again.

For entrees my wife had the Barrio Bowl with tofu, and I had the Grilled Sirloin with the cilantro lime sauce. Both dishes were great, I also recommend the Brazil Bowl, any of the tacos, and the shrimp chili relleno. They are all great, the ingredients are fresh and tasty, and the service is good. They don't take reservations but I have never really had to wait very long for a table there. If you like Mexican food with a little twist you need to try Barrio Star.
